jude   stafford   was   the   youngest   of   two,   which   should’ve   meant   less   pressure   but   somehow   didn’t.   his   father,   george,   was   an   academy   director,   so   football   was   always   around   before   jude   even   had   a   say   in   whether   he   wanted   it   to   be.   his   mother,   celia,   was   from   capri,   though   london   had   turned   her   into   someone   who   knew   how   to   host   the   right   dinner,   smile   at   the   right   people   and   make   everything   look   fine.   

the   staffords   weren’t   famous - famous,   but   they   were   known   enough   for   people   to   talk.   in   their   house,   people   talking   was   basically   the   end   of   the   world.   one   bad   photo,   a   careless   comment   or   a   stupid   choice   at   the   wrong   party   and   suddenly   it   had   to   be   handled.   george   always   hated   giving   anyone   a   reason   to   doubt   them   and   celia   was   too   good   at   making   messy   things   look   neat   again.

his   older   sibling, jonah,   got   tired   of   it   first.   he was always the more vocal out of the two. he   didn’t   want   the   lavish   life,   the   plan   or   to   be   another   stafford   doing   exactly   what   they   were   expected   to   do.   eventually,   he   went   off   and   chose   his   own   direction.   jude   never   really   blamed   him   for   it   but   still,   after   that,   it   felt   like   there   was   less   room   for   him   to   be   difficult.   someone   had   to   stay.   someone   had   to   behave. it   helped   that   jude   was   good   at   football but   it   also   made   everything   worse.   he   loved   the   game   before   he   realized how being good at it meant giving people something to use against him.

by   the   time   he   signed with   chelsea,   most   people   thought   jude   had   exactly   what   he   wanted.   a   career,   a   future   and   a   name   people   recognized.   he   became   the   reliable   midfielder,   the   rising   star   who   knew   better   than   to   make   trouble   for   himself.   even   his   personal   life   looked   tidy   from   the   outside.   there   were   headlines   too,   of   course.   george   had   a   way   of   making   them   sound   cleaner   than   they   were,   especially   the   ones   about   jude’s   supposed   long - term   relationship.   it   made   him   look   settled and   that   seemed   to   matter   more   than   whether   it   was   true.

capri   had   always   been   the   place   he   went   when   he   needed   out.   celia   still   had   roots   there   and   jude   had   spent   enough   summers   on   the   island   for   it   to   feel   familiar,   even   if   he’d   never   fully   belonged   to   it.   when   he   was   younger,   it   was   just   a   holiday.   later,   it   became   somewhere   he   could   breathe   without   his   father,   his   agent,   or   anyone   connected   to   the   club.   

this   time,   though,   he’s   taking   the   escape   a   little   too   seriously.   he’s   ignoring   his   agent,   dodging   his   father and   leaving   people back home   on   read.  people   would   probably   call   it   a   phase.   maybe it is. maybe, like his brother, jude was never really cut out for the life everyone kept trying to hand him. he doesn’t know yet, and that’s half the problem. he doesn’t want to quit football just to prove a point, but he’s tired of it all. for now, capri has given him enough room to be selfish, reckless and honest in some ways, even if he barely knows what he’s doing.
