Really though, what was that about? I donât know is a valid answer. It communicates very clearly that the child cannot answer your question, and therefore maybe needs more help understanding the question/situation. Why do you try and push them to give an answer they donât have? That stresses them out and it makes them feel like theyâre being punished for not knowing something.
i thought i was the only one with an âi donât knowâ problem because my parents made it seem it was the strangest and also most horrible thing in the world. i genuinely didnât know and they got angry and that only blocked my thoughts more which meant i didnât know the answer to anything else.

You know after spending so much time in therapy learning to acknowledge, name, sit with, and then appropriately act on my emotions and seeing how learning to do literally JUST that makes such a huge difference in my mental healthâŚI really am starting to understand how badly popular parenting styles fail us as children.
Like logical_crow makes such a good point, I am completely floored by the realization of how much my life would have been improved if instead of screaming at me every time I fucked up the people who raised me had taken a minute to teach me how to deal with my fuck ups. Because that was what they were supposed to do!! Screaming at me felt unfair and pointless AND IT WAS!! Kids make mistakes because they donât know any better, the only way they learn is by fucking up and having an adult explain what they did wrong and teach them how to make it right.
But most parents donât do that. They just scream or hit or humiliate their kids. Which teaches the child nothing, and then those kids grow up into adults who donât know how to manage their own emotions or clean up after their mistakes, and then continue the cycle by screaming at their own kids when they fuck up. No wonder so many of us canât deal with conflict or freak out when we make minor mistakes or donât understand our own emotions, our parents never fucking taught us those things!!
To break the cycle we have to stop seeing kids fucking up as something to be punished, because itâs supposed to be a learning opportunity, and you donât help anyone become better people by shouting at them when they say âI donât knowâ or âIt was an accidentâ or try to explain their perspective.
Goddamn. We all deserved so much better.
