love how even the example of the “ugly” woman is not fat and slobbish like the male example

Drag me all you want, go ahead, I don’t care, but this is exactly why I don’t care at all for drag. Maybe drag queens are trying to make some sort of statement, but it’s always been lost on me.

Exactly this. I’m a bit unnerved by how much drag is revered even in the radfem community, considering how absolutely sexist and vile drag is. I don’t at all find it funny. Again, sexism you can’t see becomes absolutely apparent if you switch it for a racist analogy. Just imagine these were white people taking every degrading stereotype ever attached to black people and blowing them insanely out of proportion, presenting themselves in blackface and wigs, with over the top names, and you’d be called stuck-up and oversensitive if you thought it was racist. “It’s just a parody/it’s just a joke/it’s not that serious/everyone can tell it’s not real” wouldn’t cut it. This is misogyny, pure and simple. It’s mocking women and the femininity that has been pushed on us through male force. Femininity is not us. Being “bitchy” (these men’s favorite word) is not us. Womanhood is not a costume to put on and parade about. We are so much more than how men see and perceive us, and they will never, ever understand what it’s like to be a woman, nor will they respect it. Because to them, we aren’t people, we are things, dolls, jokes, something to be consumed. Drag doesn’t teach us that gender is performative, they teach us it’s innate and that we deserve to be mocked. The joke in this is that these men can shed their costume and become men, respectable, logical and sane people again. It revolves around this, the idea that we women can’t escape our inferior natures. That’s the “joke” when white people parody black people, the fact that they really aren’t what they pretend to be. That’s not funny, that’s dehumanizing.

I mean if these men could just put on dresses and insane fits and over the top makeup and hair and get up there and call themselves manly stage names and have their personas just be over the top but not overtly, explicitly female, I think I’d have less of an issue with it. Even then I’d find it tacky and gaudy but could more easily be like ehhh that’s weird gay male culture i just don’t get bc i’m a straight woman. but the fake boobs and the mocking of women’s lives and problems and beauty routines they’re socialized to have… they really are just putting on a woman costume and calling that progressive. it’s just misogyny.
