Are you struggling to afford thecost of printing at your college? Did you know that UAL has some of the most expensive printing costs of all Art Schools in the UK…..

Have you ever been frustrated by the price of food in your college canteen? Are you  also astounded that in an increasingly ‘cashless’ city, the University still hasn’t installed card machines in all its canteens? And don’t get us started about the cutlery charges…

The service provided by college canteens and the lack of card machines at UAL was a topic frequently discussed during last terms student rep meetings. 

At meetings course reps said….

1.       The price of food in the canteen is too high

2.       UAL needs to immediately place card machines in all canteens

3.       Canteens should stop charging for cutlery

4.       The opening hours of college canteens are not long enough

  What’s more, in our 2013/14 SU Survey we asked you “what would like us to change on your course, college or university” and many of you said focus on changing the high price of food or the fact that you cannot pay on card.

Based on this feedback we are making it a priority this term to lobby the university to address these four problems.    

We spent this weekend hosting the Festival of Disobedience at the V&A, in collaboration with the Disobedient Objects Exhibition. UAL students took over the V&A learning centre to showcase their responses to student activism, cuts and the exhibition. 

The counter terrorism bill is a pernicious piece of legislation which must be opposed. We call on University of the Arts London to submit a critical response to the consultation and to threaten non-compliance with PREVENT; we urge other Students’ Unions to make similar demands and we ask the leadership of sector trade unions to take a strong stance on this too.

Calling all students and the recent graduates, we are looking for wall based art submissions based around the experience and issues that LGBTQ students face in the Creative Industries.

Why is it that only a small percentage of what we learn, see and hear about in our art schools and galleries comes from the majority of the world: Women and non-white people?

Institutional racism and sexism has for centuries shut a wealth of talent out. It has reinforced white, western patriarchal perspectives on art and design as the ‘norm’.

Did you know that the Students’ Union offers employment advice?

Your Students’ Union Advice Service can now offer you support on Employment Rights, but we need you help to improve this service. 

We’re looking for UAL students to participate in Focus Groups this month. This a unique opportunity to make sure that what we’re doing suits your needs.

We want to know what your main concerns are when it comes to undertaking paid employment/internships/freelance work? How would you like to be supported when exercising your rights?

Your input’s really important and so we’re offering a £5 voucher for either Amazon or Made in Arts London to participants (your choice). Unfortunately we can only have four students from each college so places are limited.

I am delighted to announce that after a year and a half of running around and sending proposals back and forth and endless meetings, UAL has now agreed to adopt everything that we asked for in our proposal!

For the 2015-2016 academic year, there will be 10 scholarship, each worth £25,000, for international students from the low and lower middle income countries from these regions:

East Asia and Pacific

Europe and Central Asia

Latin America and the Caribbean

Middle East and North Africa

South Asia

Sub Saharan Africa
