guys i’m being so serious right now when i say that if he wrote that letter or has any opinions like that, it does not make him a bad person. this is not me trying to defend him, but there is an explanation for all the points he made. this is often an issue with STEM/tech guys; as much as luigi is able to think fairly critically and has done a lot of reading into certain topics, truthfully he doesn’t look into things as deep as he should. also i would say that hyperfixating on one topic for months (the issues within the healthcare industry) would have made him even less likely to consider anything else that deserves our attention.
he says america is “in the midst of an adolescent identity crisis” — that’s something he’s been pretty vocal about on his twitter, the issues with the current political spectrum in america (remember he also didn’t agree with DEI, this sort of thinking isn’t new from him) so he’s focusing on the broader conflict of ideology between liberals and conservatives, he’s not thinking about, therefore isn’t excusing, the much bigger issues in america currently.
and it’s very typical of him to say “despite all her flaws” as if what’s wrong with the country is harmless flaws. again, his ignorance, but this is the same sort of thing as the misogynistic retweet, if someone spoke to him about these ideas he would realize how ignorant they are.
i think some of you don’t want to believe this letter is real because you don’t want him to hold bigoted beliefs, but honestly i can tell exactly where each point is coming from. we have to expect to disagree with him on things sometimes — i was so shocked to see in january that he’d retweeted that point about women being the achilles heel of the species and men needing their own spaces, but there is a lot to unpack about why individuals hold certain beliefs or become misguided into insensitive viewpoints.
again, the letter might not be real and i’m always the one advocating for us to wait before speaking on any letters, but i wanted to state this to remind you guys that at some point we will likely hear him say something we don’t agree with. his twitter was already proof of that
