02.15.19 // this week we moved in with a host family in greater London area which means we have to commute into central London during the day. Our bus ride was beautiful as the sun shone in the frosted windows. We went to another Joe & the Juice location, probably my favorite coffee shop when it comes to the atmosphere and decor. I worked on catching up in my journal and started reading for an assignment for class.

About an hour ago, I was in Walmart looking for my conditioner because today is wash day for my hair. As Iām looking for my product, this older white lady approaches me and she says, āExcuse me, miss. Please donāt be offended by this.ā And usually when white people tell me not to be offended, 9 times out of 10, whatever they are about to say is going to be offensive af.
Anyway, she follows it up with, āMy husband and I just recently won our custody battle with our foster daughter and she means the world to us. Sheās a beautiful African American girl and her hair looks a lot like yours. But Iām afraid because I donāt know what to do with her hair. Itās a lot different from mines and our other children and we are at a total loss. Iāve tried looking up the YouTube videos and my husband went to the braiding shops so they can teach him how to properly braid her hair, but heās still pretty new and it will be a while before he gets used to it. Do you have any tips you can give me? If you donāt have the time, itās okay, really! I just needed a little advice because I want her to look beautiful.ā
Yāall. swear I almost started crying on aisle 6. So for the last 30 minutes, I spent my time talking to her and what products to use and how to properly detangle and comb her hair with the proper tools and what not to do with natural hair. And I showed her a bunch of easier to follow natural hair tutorials on YouTube and saved them for her. (I also had to create a YouTube account for her so she could save it for later.) but omfg, she was so sweet, and I could tell that she listened to every single thing I had to say and she took little notes on her little notepad.
And what really filled my heart was the fact that her husband actually taking classes from African braiding shops. And she showed me a picture of him wearing a little sweater vest and loafers in a little shop surrounded by beautiful black women showing him how to braid black hair and even the lady heās braiding on is guiding his hands. And omfg. Bless these old white people and their black daughter who I know have new loving parents because they are willing to step out of their comfort zone just to make her feel and look beautiful.
I really hope our paths cross again one day, Mrs Cicilia. šš
I have so much love and respect for women who are honest about their own loneliness but also find the good in it like when audrey hepburn said āI have to be alone very often. Iād be quite happy if I spent from Saturday night until Monday morning alone in my apartment. Thatās how I refuelā and when charlotte bronte said āIĀ care for myself. The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myselfā and when jenny slate said āI think Iāve come to terms with the fact that there will always be a ribbon of loneliness running through who I am. Tips to learn a language when you have no time to learn a language
Learn at least one new word each day.
Listen to one song each day in your target language and put attention to the lyrics.
Watch a video in your target language.
Listen to audiobooks in your target language when youāre on the road to your school/work/etcetera.
Read an easy article in your target language. Like the news!
Make two sentences.
Speak to yourself in your target language when getting ready in the bathroom.
Put your phone and social media in your target language.
Lingodeer, Duolingo, Memrise and similar apps are life-savers.
Remember you donāt have to do all of these each day. You can switch, omit or just do all of them. Always try different things to see which ones are fit to your learning style.
You are the books you read, the films you watch, the music you listen to, the people you meet, the dreams you have, the conversations you engage in. You are what you take from these. You are the sound of the ocean, the breath of fresh air, the brightest light and the darkest corner. You are a collective of every experience you have had in your life. You are every single day.
