If you listen closely today, youâll be able to hear the Europeans⢠of Tumblr hatching from their year longs rest, donning their ABBA sequin jumpsuits, and reciting our national anthem âDancing Lasha Tumbaiâ, in preparation for EUROVISION TONIGHT.Â

A reminder that turning in assignments for partial credit is better than not turning them in at all. It is. Even if you think youâve done a bad job and are ashamed of your work, or itâs way overdue, you take whatever you can get. Partial credit dramatically improves your grade over a zero, and Iâm always astounded by how often even the smartest kids donât really comprehend that. 60% is worlds better than 0%. Even 10% is going to help you. Letter grades are misleading and are not created equal. âF"s are mathematically valuable. Turn that late assignment in.
This goes for so many things in life tbh.
Canât pay the full amount you owe on a bill? Pay as much as you can each month. Most places just wanna know youâre making a good faith effort. You can usually even call and ask for a smaller minimum monthly payment plan until you catch up, so that maybe you wonât be getting late fees added on to your balance. Itâs worth calling to see.Â
Third time youâve had to reschedule that doctorâs appointment? Oh well. Your doc probably just wants to make sure you make it in to their office at all. Keep trying.
Half-assing is always better than no-assing folks. I know lots of us are anxiety-ridden perfectionists and it feels like if we canât do everything exactly right on the first try we just shouldnât bother. But thatâs not true.Â
My mom likes to say âanything worth doing is worth doing poorlyâ to emphasize that itâs okay to enjoy doing things even if youâre not good at them. The point is doing them. Make that shitty art project that makes you happy. Learn that new skill even if you suck at it at first. Make it to under half of the events of that club or organization you want to be a part of but canât fully commit to. Itâs okay. You donât have to do it perfectly to do it at all.Â
anything worth doing is worth doing poorly.
a small guide on how i battle my essays! (click on an image to view it clearer)Â
(keep in mind: iâm an english major so a majority of my essays are literature-focused!)
these are just some of the methods i want to share that work for me when i write my innumerable amount of essays! iâm definitely a huge planner so itâs no secret that i spend a lot of time on an essay. if youâre a deadline fighter, these tips might not necessarily be helpful (especially the handwriting one). but i hope this gives you an insight on how i write my essays! đ
types of study breaks for every situation
if you realize youâve been studying for hours: grab a snack to refuel your body and watch a sitcom to refuel your brain. then back to the books.
if youâre feeling stressed out: take some deep breaths, text your friends, maybe stare at a wall for a few minutes. gather yourself.
if you canât seem to focus: get moving and get outside. take out the garbage, check your mail box, maybe walk your dog. just get moving and get fresh air. itâll help bring you back.
if thereâs something else going on in your life and you canât get it off your mind: write down whatâs going through your head, sort of like a diary entry. itâll help you work things out.
if youâre just mentally and physically exhausted: set a timer for 25-30 minutes and take a nap. any longer and youâll hit REM and youâll wake up feeling just as tired. once you wake up, get some caffeine in you.
if the material is boring as hell: find another way to study. see if thereâs a crash course video online about it or draw out what youâre trying to learn in diagrams and pictures to make it fun.
if people around you wonât shut up: listen to some music. soundtrack and classical music is always good because they wonât absorb you as much as music with lyrics. white noise (like ocean waves, rain sounds, etc.) also works.
if you only half understand a concept: call/message a friend whoâs not in the class and try to teach the material to them. this will help you mentally work through the material and will help you remember it as well.
The Hogwarts House as Students (Based on People I Know)
Gryffindor
listens to anime osts while studying
highlights everything, gOD
acts like a roman orator during class reports
âpisses offâ the teacher with their jokes but is secretly probably the teacherâs fave student
mnemonics
either studies ahead of time or DOESNâT SLEEP FOR 48 HOURS BECAUSE THEY PROCRASTINATED (there is no in between)
 flashcards galore
gets elected as class president because their friends thought it would be funny (but is actually pretty good at the job??)
determination to succeed even when theyâre already too done with everything
Ravenclaw
has 100 highlighters and a system for how to use them
âdo you think iâll still have to take the exam if i die from caffeine overdose?â
really creative bullet journals (or minimalist layouts)
âhow do you have such perfect handwriting?â âoh, itâs always been that way.â *actually spent 1000 hours perfecting it*
scrolls through the studyblr tag and calls it studying
posts something on studyblr and calls it studying
procrastinates a lot tbh.Â
classical music
gets anxious about not studying. still not studying because theyâre too anxious to start. (relatable?)
always getting irrational thoughts about their âfailingâ grades
Hufflepuff
lots of colorful pens
a e s t h e t i c  study spaces
extra af when it comes to projects (theyâll probably wear a mammoth costume during their report about the ice age. yâknow, for authenticity)
working really hard for a subject they are not good at. feeling very satisfied when they get a high grade on that subject.
probably expects the worst so they donât get disappointed
helping others study
sharing their notes
comforts other students who are having nervous breakdowns but they probably need comforting as well
all-nighters.Â
Slytherin
motivational quotes
studying extra hard for a subject someone told them theyâre not good at, purely for the satisfaction of proving them wrong
theyâre e x t r a af, in general
getting really high grades, but only seeing that one grade that was lower than they expected
either really organized or really messy (but, like, in an organized way)
mind maps and flowcharts
look calm as fuck when it comes to tests but itâs probably because theyâre disassociating lmao
working hard not just because they like it, but because they simply donât like the thought of failing
really supportive of their friends but at the same time bitter when they get higher marks at something (but only because they see it as a sign of personal failure)
has high standards for them themselves. at the same time, they feel like everyone expects too much of them.

Pet peeve: Medical students who go on about medicine being the âhardestâ degree and act like itâs the best, most important thing someone can do. That kind of intellectual snobbery is just so annoying. Youâre not better than other people who study other subjects or do different careers.Â
Medicine isnât âthe topâ (as Iâve seen some people and posts on tumblr say), itâs a certain career path that we have chosen. Most people just donât want to be doctors, ya know? Your âtopâ goal may be medicine, but that doesnât mean itâs the same for everyone.
Of course studying medicine is hard work. I find it hard, I have to study a lot, I sometimes find it difficult to balance things. But you know what Iâd find harder? A physics degree. The complex science they have to learn goes way beyond what we learn in med school. Or an English degree, because I suck at writing essays. Or a nursing degree, because even in their first year they have so many hours of placement and have to do night shifts. Or going to study for a year in freaking JAPAN like my friend did. Or being a policewoman. Etc. Most career choices/degrees are hard in their own way and give different challenges.
Itâs fine to be proud of studying medicine. I am. Just not so much that it blinds you to the hard work and challenges of others, and not so much that you become one of those, as we call here in Britain, âmedic wankersâ.Â
