One issue we’ve been having is illegal conversions. It started off as shady apartment landlords illegally converting rooms so they can fit in more tenants and make more money, but now it’s overflowing to homes too. 

There’s shady wannabe landlords and developers buying houses (sometimes with money laundered cash)  that are legally 1 or 2 families and they illegally convert it to being SROs and start digging into the foundations.

It’s really bad, especially since they often take advantage of immigrants and the working poor. Two of my dog park friends lived in a 2-family house that was illegally converted into a 4-family. They’ve since moved out and found a better apartment, but not everyone is so lucky.

This shit is fucking DANGEROUS and the DOB takes their sweet-ass time to inspect. Oh, and they’re corrupt as fuck too.

Seriously, people have died because of illegal conversions. One house was illegally removing asbestos and left it in a flimsy container with nothing but a shoddy plastic tarp covering it.
