This is another reason why I prefer the support needs autism labels. My autism isn't "mild" to me by any stretch of the word, but my support needs are usually low, although not always.

Masking is an automatic defence mechanism for me, and dropping it in public, or around people I don't feel comfortable around sounds like a nightmare. Time and time again, anytime I dropped my mask around anyone but my safe circle led to ridicule and harassment. No thank you. I'll just keep my mask on.
