Every single time I see cries on this website about a protest agianst a synagogue it ends up being revealed that there was a real estate event at the place including the West Bank and that the real estate or synagogue supports settler movements which are erasing Palestinains from the West Bank, which "conveniently" people who cry about these protests never mention, and all that ends up happening is yet another example on why no one cares when you guys cry about protests in support of Palestine anymore. In fact I think these protests need to continue until these real estate events stop or at the very least I stop seeing these protests being talked about on this side of Tumblr without mentioning the elephant in the room.
I don't agree with the methods, but Judea and Samaria are part of our native lands (unlike Gaza actually which was never part of ancient Israel and Judea as far as I know). Decolonizing our indigenous lands from 2000 years of settler colonialism is a core part of our religion for thousands of years, even if I strongly disagree with the way the right wing folks in J&S are currently going about it. We won enough of our native land back in wars we didn't start. The rest can go to the descendents of 2000 years of settler colonialism on our lands, I have no issue with this personally.

But these protestors weren't simply protesting the practice of decolonizing the western bank of the Jordan River. They were calling for the demise of the entire state of Israel which holds half the world's Jewish population, in effect calling for Jewish genocide and ethnic cleansing from our homeland.

In an interview on a popular web series posted Tuesday, US rock musician Julian Casablancas alleged that âAmerican Zionistsâ are deeply privileged yet behave as if they are âBlack people during slavery.â
The comment appeared in a 21-minute âuncutâ edition of the web series âSubwayTakes,â in which host Kareem Rahma interviews both famous and up-and-coming New Yorkers about their most controversial opinions.
âWell, itâs been nice having a career,â Casablancas, the frontman for the band The Strokes, said before he dove into his hot take: âAmerican Zionists get the benefits of white privileged people, but talk like they are Black people during slavery.â
Rahma, a comedian, responded immediately, as he always does, with his personal view on the opinion: â100% agree.â
The full-length video was posted to the âSubwayTakesâ YouTube channel, which has nearly 1 million subscribers. An abridged version without the comments about American Zionists was shared to other âSubwayTakesâ channels on Instagram and TikTok, where the projectâs followings are larger.
Casablancasâ comments were not unprecedented for him: Earlier this week, his band used its final song at the Coachella music festival to condemn the US-Israeli war on Iran and Israelâs campaign in Gaza. The frontman previously signed onto a letter calling for a cultural boycott of Israel.
But his discussion with Rahma pointed to how blanket criticism of âZionistsâ has grown commonplace in youth-oriented and left-leaning American spaces. In the comments section, some viewers said Casablancas represented a model for how artists should take a stand against Israel and its supporters.
âJulian doubling down on criticising (american) zionists and zionism and american imperialism at large got me feeling hopeful and proud. smart, loud, and so fâking cool,â one commenter wrote on YouTube. âit truly is that easy @ everyone else in the industry.â
The video also marked Rahmaâs strongest public comments about Israel, even as neither he nor Casablancas uttered the countryâs name. He previously said he asked to press Vice President Kamala Harris for her take on the war in Gaza, which he opposed, during her appearance on the show in 2024, but was rebuffed.
âIâve never seen something so shocking where theyâre like âIâm so oppressed. Iâm an oppressed person,ââ Rahma said after agreeing with Casablancasâ take. âIâm like, âYou are going to a wedding in Tel Aviv right now, when there are 80,000 dead people â and more â 80,000-plus dead people, including women and children half a mile away.â (The Gaza border is about an hourâs drive south of Tel Aviv.)
Rahma concluded: âAbsolutely fâed. And totally â you know what? I donât think itâs bad to say that.â
In a further explanation of his take, Casablancas acknowledged that the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel was âbadâ and also anticipated what those who disagree with him about Israel might say.
âI mean, just for the people that are going to be like, âHamas, October 7 ââ yes, bad,â he said. âBut, you know, Native American rebellions didnât mean it was okay to do what we did. Slave rebellions that were violent didnât mean that slavery is not bad. You know what I mean? So, thatâs the scope of that answer. Just to be â for the haters, for the media illiterate.â
In the 21-minute âSubwayTakesâ video, Casablancas also came out against long audio voice messages and said that conservatives and progressives need to come together and âdo a non-corporate consensus populist party, fight the billionaire gang agenda villains.â
When Rahma suggested that Americans should be allowed to stop paying taxes if the United States bombs their native country, Casablancas noted, âI know Iranian Americans that want America to bomb Iran, though.â
Casablancas has led The Strokes since their debut album, âIs This It,â in 2001, which rocketed them to rock stardom and is often pointed to as the start of the 2000s garage rock revival genre. The band has won multiple Brit Awards, and their 2021 album âThe New Abnormalâ won a Grammy for Best Rock Album. Casablancas has also released multiple successful solo albums.
The Strokesâ guitarist Nick Valensi spoke with the magazine Tablet in 2018 about being the son of a religious Tunisian Jewish father and the husband of a Sephardic Jewish woman.
Rahma, who is Egyptian-American, is also the creator of âKeep the Meter Running,â a web series where he interviews cab drivers and asks them to take him to their favorite place while keeping the meter running.
In an August 2023 episode, he meets a Bukharian cab driver from Uzbekistan who takes him to 2nd Avenue Deli, a kosher staple on the Upper East Side.

In western countries, the biggest threat to Jews isn't street level violence (although it's real) or being rounded up, rather it's a rapidly developing situation where admission to elite institutions for Jews will be subject to a political litmus test. And as the Overton window on Israel/Palestine has shifted significantly on the left in recent years, the nature of the litmus test gets more stringent.
There was a time when dissociating from the settlement movement and the Israeli right was sufficient for just about all possible needs in elite institutions. We're rapidly approaching a situation where that simply isn't true any more. Even democratic single statism isn't enough. Even opposing violence against Israeli Jews, or having ostensibly non-political connections with Israel, is becoming disqualifying.
