actually i wont lie the deeper i get dragged into the todoroki family hole the more pissed i get about even the well meaning depictions of rei from the fandom because like she genuinely has tried to call enji on his shit every step of the way and shes direct as fuck about it too like
like yes todoroki says "my mom was always crying" in ch 31 but rei has always been a character who is incredibly astute and willing to say it as she sees it and i feel like that strength gets ignored just because she, idk, was a battered wife? like again even endeavor is like "are you really the woman i married" but thats because shes been defined by his perception of her as weak when in reality shes been like this the whole time. idk idk even people trying to critique the work for its treatment of her narratively will do so with the implication she has been a passive and submissive victim when thats just not true.
its implied shes the one who decided endeavor should fight dabi and not just shoto bc shoto was ready to take it on alone before he spoke with her. when she says hes still trying in the high end chapter she also says that yes, he might be doing it because of outside forces! he may just be doing it because hes being pressured somehow! shes aware of the way these things work! but she both recognizes effort and when an effort needs to be made! she cares about whats being done and what needs to be done she dgaf about his feelings or the "purity" thereof so long as he does his duty as a father/patriarch/hero
rei has never been under the illusion that endeavors just better now nor does she think hes any less at fault. forgiveness and moving on for her isnt framed through a lens of "accepting enji" or "forgetting the past" shes focused on wanting to be part of her kids lives.
if anything rei isnt a passive victim by merit of the fact she actively takes accountability for the way she may have failed as a parent with the understanding of the extenuating circumstances! she doesnt NOT blame enji, she knows that she was still these childrens mother and she owed them a duty of care she ended up being unable to fulfill and wants to be sure she can fulfill it before she waltzes back into their lives. thats whats her discharge really hinges on; has she recovered enough to live with her children again, including the one she injured and has only recently been able to speak with her again. and yes i dont fault rei for her situation shoto doesnt fault her for her situation but as a character her saying she couldnt/shouldnt care for them before it happened and then being so focused on where she feels she failed AND then fucking doing something about it when dabi posts the callout shows that rei as a person has a lot of agency and a strong sense of personal responsibility
i do think the narrative fumbles in a lot of ways but i think reis character isnt nearly as meek and flat as people think it is and i think the idea that she would only be strong if she somehow attacked the man abusing her and her children (crime) (he is twice her size) (she has to consider the fallout for her four children) or divorced him (she does not have a job or any assets) (there is no guarantee she would get custody, especially with no job or assets) (she personally wanted to try and have a healthy family eeven with the circumstances she wanted to be able to grin and bear it she knew shits been fucking grim ok) is doing her an incredible disservice.
reis character doesnt do a 180 when dabis dance happens its not suddenly that shes a new person no matter what endeavor says and the fact that shes kind and gentle with her children and doesnt speak poorly about their father to them doesnt change that which. first of all what would that even do second of all rei just isnt the kind of person to bitch and moan but that doesnt mean she never expresses dissatisfaction or place fault on him. she has a character okay .
ive kinda lost the plot here i got distracted reading all of the chapters shes in but i like rei todoroki a lot . and it annoys me how few people seem to recognize the fact a lot of fanon perception of her isnt even the fault of the text some of yall are just misogynists or think that because she had a psychotic episode subsequently worsened by grief means she cant also be a character with a strong personality and very grounded world view
i think a lot of people see her as a watered down fuyumi (and theey water down fuyumi already) but rei is honestly pretty bold! she wants to try and keep smiling in that flashback for the sake of the family (because she has, you know, children) but that doesnt mean she doesnt identify acknowledge and call out what she sees happening both within herself and with others and i think . serves in direct foil to endeavor, who justified his means with the intended ends, by being a character that puts impact before intention
whatever . stan rei todoroki.
