hi! my name is stillalivedoingscience, although I go by many other names on this site too. I used to run a popular portal blog back in 2012-2014, but I’ve never been able to relinquish the hold Portal chronically has on my brain, so I remade this sideblog as a place to occasionally post Portal content.

currently mostly focusing these days on the 2022-version of my longfic, Target Acquired. currently ~175,000 words on AO3, Target Acquired is a post-game AU in which Chell and Wheatley aren’t banished from Aperture at the end of the game and have to find a way to forgive and forget enough to form an alliance and escape from Aperture - hopefully for good, this time. (I started writing this fic back in 2011, with a desire to explore all Portal characters and Aperture backstory with a focus on friendship and adventure opposed to shipping)

but given a lot of the personality traits that were written into him and after thinking abt him not just back in the day but coming at it with an older person’s perspective now, I have to say that I vastly disagree with these poll results and do not think by any stretch that Wheatley is a queer coded character
I hesitate to even say he has any measure of autism rep in him. I legit think he was always just written to be what he largely is for a lot of the game - lacking in self-awareness, quite self-centered, embodying a lot of traits that are stereotypically associated with straight men such as a fixation with power/control, unwillingness to listen to others, the game even has sexual allegory to the power dynamics theme in some scenes which notably only surfaces with him
I feel like the only thing abt him that would make me consider him as anything except straight would be like. His bad social skills, but again, not really because they’re not autistic so much as like, narcissistic tbh

jk about not explaining. Not kidding abt NO WHEATLEY. Here’s why:

more importantly, while Portal 2 was epic and I was legit Wheatley’s biggest fan girl back in the day, and Portal 2 was the perfect game to have him in, putting him in the limelight in further media would begin to shift the limelight TOO much away from GLaDOS imho in a way that would make it start to be like. wtf, this IS her story technically
less Wheatley means more strong/awesome women charas
because if Wheatley is there the second he’s in the room it’s all anyone ever talks abt or sees and that’s why nobody ever noticed the incredible potential for GLaDOS/Caroline/Cave/Chell stories. Hellooooooo this woman lives her ENTIRE ADULT LIFE with this man building this empire of this off the wall insane science company that ultimately kills the love of her life. And she likely grieved so hard for so long she committed the ultimate act of self sabotage - to upload herself into a machine that would force her to live forever so that she would never be allowed the dignity and peace of death
thats 1 take. Those 4 characters have an insane potential for different takes and nearly all of them would rock as movie canon
put Wheatley in and none of that will ever happen bc he’s there so now the story has to be abt him instead. Again, justified in Portal 2! But not justified outside it tbh, especially not bc the purpose his chara served has already been squared away/accomplished
great fun character but the overarching theme/message/story of Portal is abt these 3 science ladies and their unhinged CEO/science husband Cave Johnson

With a familiar sssshhhhhrrrkk, Chell dragged the makeshift bed she’d used overnight into the beam of sunlight. She fanned this out methodically, arranging the ripped pieces into an organized pattern she felt satisfied with, before stepping over to the turret. Preparing to bear its weight, Chell bent at the knees, struggling, but managed to wiggle it over to the pile of cardboard by sheer willpower. She placed it down carefully directly in the middle, so that the beam of sunlight fell right onto the sleeping turret’s pearly white face with the most radiant iridescent sheen.
Then, she stepped over to the remains of the fire, picking up a half-burned stick of wood, taking care not to touch the charcoaled end of it. She then knelt at the turret’s feet and began to write with the stick.
Here lies Turret, until the end times, she transcribed in messy, unpracticed charcoal-black letters, pushing back the sudden, extreme awareness that she probably looked identical to someone else who had once passed through these walls and left cryptic pictures and messages scrawled here just like she was doing now. Who helped us when no one else would. May his/her all-seeing, all-knowing spirit fly, unbound by the walls of this chamber, and live to soar skyward through this opened ceiling and out into the heavens beyond.
Dropping the stick, she then fell back to examine her handiwork. With an almost angelic innocence, the turret’s face glowed moon-white, its pale casing glinting as they slept on in peaceful unawares, a biblical slumber until, like she had written, the end times. They were unaware that this was their final goodbye, unaware that they were all unequivocally setting off in their separate directions to begin a last, grand Quest, one that would probably be full of the kinds of dangers and adventure only someplace like Aperture could provide.
Goodbye, Turret, thought Chell with a solemn pang of finality.
“Goodbye, Turret,” echoed Wheatley, his voice quiet, very fittingly subdued.
Then, figuring that there was no more point in dawdling, she turned her back to the turret shrine and started down the remaining bit of hall, making her way towards the exit.
