Here is the truth about September: It sneaks up on you and all of a sudden it’s autumn, and you don’t know what to do with your recently orphaned August daydreams so you tuck them between the pages of brand new notebooks and you leave them in the corners of your sweatshirts pockets to gather lint and you set them on fire until all the trees are smouldering red orange and yellow.

There are all these moments you don’t think you will survive. And then you survive.

We don’t have a word for the opposite of loneliness, but if we did, I could say that’s what I want in life…it’s not quite love and it’s not quite community; it’s just this feeling that there are people, an abundance of people, who are in this together. Who are on your team. When the check is paid and you stay at the table. When it’s 4 a.m. and no one goes to bed. That night with the guitar. That night we can’t remember. That time we did, we went, we saw, we laughed, we felt.

I never realized what a big deal that was. How amazing it is to find someone who wants to hear about all the things that go on in your head.
