emailing one of the local auction houses this week like "hi i'm a person with completely normal interests but incidentally i noticed that based on the serial number the mini fridge you're auctioning is actually subject to a safety recall. yeah i know this for reasons other than reading about product safety recalls for fun" regular guy behavior
actually i feel like people should know that these mini fridges have been recalled because i feel like a lot of people have owned one of these? and they may or may not burn your house down
This recall involves Curtis International minifridges. âFrigidaireâ is printed on the front of the units. The model and serial numbers are on a label on the back of the minifridge. The model numbers of the affected units are: EFMIS129, EFMIS137, EFMIS149 and EFMIS175. The minifridges were sold in 6- and 9-Can sizes. The minifridges were sold in a variety of colors, including black, blue, green, white, yellow, red, pink and silver. They were sold from January 2020 through December 2023 for between $36 and $40. Curtis International has received at least 26 reports of the minifridges smoking, sparking, burning, melting, overheating and catching fire, with property damages totaling more than $700,000. Two consumers reported smoke inhalation injuries. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled minifridges and follow the instructions to receive a refund at www.recallrtr.com/minifridge. Consumers should unplug and cut the power cord and write âRecallâ using a permanent marker on the front door of the unit. Consumers should dispose of the recalled minifridges in accordance with local and state regulations.
so yeah regular guy PSA i guess. don't burn down your house
i will add on that these micro fridges are not even very effective as fridges. the cooling unit is a very very small panel [about 3" square] and does not effectively cool even the very small volume of air within the cooler, even considering the comparatively massive amount of electricity it requires to run for even a few hours. and it WILL take over 8 hours to bring a room-temp 6-pack of soda to Slightly Above Safe Refrigeration Temperature [anywhere from 45 to 60 degrees F]. the device outputs cold air at the same rate it expels hot air in the exchange of energy [in addition to sparking and catching fire, apparently] and if i remember correctly these devices also do not have an effective vent fan [which probably doesnt help the fact that its a confirmed fire hazard], so it will make your office/bathroom/lounge quite warm as a result.
i understand a lot of people purchased these things as cosmetics/chilled face mask storage on their vanities or in their bathrooms, too, but it is really really really really not worth the continued energy expenditure, the fire risk, nor the hazard of injury to have the luxury of convenience.
instead, you could look into purchasing a mini fridge that actually cycles coolant like a standard fridge; though they will never be as compact, quiet and inexpensive as the aforementioned micro fridges as a result of the compressors and motors necessary to provide effective cooling and circulation, they will be very very very very much safer to have in your home, and, yknow, they actually FUNCTION EFFECTIVELY as a device that you can use to quickly lower the temperature of an object within.
or you could just put your drinks and/or face masks in the fridge you probably already have in or near your space đ these personal fridge things are really really terrible and dangerous

Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania may have developed a vaccine for seasonal allergies and food allergies.
Y'ALL THIS IS SO COOL AND COULD BE HUGE FOR SO MANY PEOPLE
additional article:
A new Penn mRNA vaccine stopped allergens from causing dangerous immune reactions and life-threatening inflammation in mice.
BRIEF SUMMARY:
It is an mRNA vaccine with successful mammalian (mice) trials.
The vaccine targets life-threatening inflammation and immune responses.
Mice with serious allergies, which received the vaccine tailored to those allergies, stopped having immune reactions when exposed to those allergens.
Aka: vaccinating against allergies.
If they can develop it for safe human use, it could save an enormous amount of lives, and IMPROVE the lives of people who live in constant fear of encountering their lethal allergens.
Because itâs able to be tailored, and specifically affects the immune system response, it may one day be able to adjust immune responses to chronic conditions like Celiac Disease, Asthma, Food Sensitivities, Food Allergies, and potentially many other autoimmune disorders.
Imagine a future where a child with a deadly shellfish allergy could get a shot and just⌠not be allergic anymore. Eat shrimp with no fear.
Be born with Celiac, get a shot, and casually eat gluten with no side effects.
Weâre not quite there yet, but itâs performing well in mammalian trials, and we have high hopes!
YouTube made AI enhancements to videos without telling users or asking permission. As AI quietly mediates our world, what happens to our sha
"It turns out, he wasn't. In recent months, YouTube has secretly used artificial intelligence (AI) to tweak people's videos without letting them know or asking permission. Wrinkles in shirts seem more defined. Skin is sharper in some places and smoother in others. Pay close attention to ears, and you may notice them warp. These changes are small, barely visible without a side-by-side comparison. Yet some disturbed YouTubers say it gives their content a subtle and unwelcome AI-generated feeling.
There's a larger trend at play. A growing share of reality is pre-processed by AI before it reaches us. Eventually, the question won't be whether you can tell the difference, but whether it's eroding our ties to the world around us."
1. What happened YouTube admitted itâs been running AI processing on some Shorts â sharpening, denoising, smoothing â without asking permission. Creators noticed their own faces looked subtly âoff,â like they were wearing AI makeup. And the altered version is what the audience sees.
2. Why this crosses a line
Ownership: Your video is your work. Your face is your image. When YouTube silently rewrites it, they are asserting that theyânot youâown how you appear on their platform.
Trust: Creators like Rick Beato and Rhett Shull rely on authenticity. If the platform itself tampers with that, it erodes the bond between creator and audience.
Consent: On your phone, you can toggle filters. On YouTube, you arenât asked. Thatâs the difference between a tool you control and a platform that controls you.
Reality creep: These changes seem tiny, but they normalize the idea that media is always pre-processed. Once you accept that, the very expectation of ârealnessâ starts to vanish.
3. Why YouTube thinks they can do this
Most people wonât notice.
Those who do notice wonât leave; thereâs no real competition at YouTubeâs scale.
With bigger global crises, this feels too trivial to fight. They know apathy and exhaustion keep most people quiet.
4. The deeper problem This isnât about whether a shirt wrinkle looks sharper. Itâs about power. YouTube doesnât see itself as a neutral distributor of your work. It sees itself as the author of the experience, with full rights to âoptimizeâ your content however it likes. Creators are just raw material. Thatâs why they didnât ask: asking implies you could say no.
5. What can be done
Raise awareness. The only reason this surfaced was because creators with big audiences noticed. Keep amplifying it.
Demand control. A mandatory opt-out is the minimum. YouTube must not alter identity without consent.
Diversify. Explore Nebula, PeerTube, even Patreon-hosted video. Every bit of independence reduces monopoly leverage.
Frame the stakes. This isnât âjust a filter.â Itâs a question of who owns your image, your work, your voice. If we concede that to the platform, weâll lose the last trace of authenticity online.
6. The bottom line Google once said âDonât be evil.â Now the motto is closer to âDonât get caught.â Theyâre not testing video quality â theyâre testing how much tampering people will tolerate before they resist. And if thereâs no resistance, the platformâs ownership over your reality becomes the default.

Just so people know, epilepsy warnings arenât about, like, purity culture, or online leftists acting as if disabled people are real. Itâs about my mom
We human beings have discovered patterns of light and/or sound that kill some people and we should probably not have hissy fits about your right to fire a weapon at my mom. Like if you could put some text onscreen explaining the upcoming seizure-inducing patterns so that people can scroll away. Thatâs super fucking easy. i AM sorry that something as mindless as a tiktok edit could kill someone but hey, so could driving to work every morning, we all treat THAT accordingly (long, pointed stare. because yes we had better be treating that accordingly too)
The casual abundance of Thing That Kills People doesnât mean you shouldnât avoid killing people
#all media should have epilepsy warnings like all food should have allergy warnings#and if you disagree then I'll kick your ass

[video description: a mouse puppet wearing chainmail while sitting at a table. On the left side of the table, a bowl of two avocados pushes in. On the right, there is a small chalkboard, which the puppet turns to show that it reads "2 for $10." The puppet sings a parody of running up that hill. It sings "if I only could, I'd make a deal with God, two avocados for ten bucks. He'd say 'that's not very good.' I'd say 'yeah but you're God. Isn't money kind of beneath you?' he'd say 'it's the principle.' I'd say 'do you want avocados or not?' the video cuts out. End description.]

âcharacters in fic are too good at identifying scentsâ is officially an âhis eyes did not literally darkenâ level of complaint to me now like itâs about the drama itâs about the romance itâs about atmosphere itâs about taking you to a heightened version of reality!!! please suspend your disbelief at least enough for vibes-based sensory descriptions it will be So Worth It i promise
Tags stolen from prev (sydmarch) but like taking literally TWO seconds of thought and a kindergarteners knowledge of how scent works would have made that line make sense!!! Our olifactory memory is so good that yes, someone who has been in a midnight forest might actually recognize the scent of a midnight forest. When we smell things, the memory of when it was last smelt comes before the recollection of the scent! You might smell a room and think âthis smells like a middle school slumber partyâ before you think âthis smells like the exact lotion my best friend used growing up and someone made popcorn recently.â
So like, yes, someone can smell wet pine needles and moss because dew forms at the coldest point in the night, plus all the nearby flowers are closed so thereâs less of a floral scent, and the smells of plants baking in the sun are absent. But no one fucking thinks that, they think âI experience this smell in a midnight forest.â
But tbh that shouldnât even matter, the purpose of the sentence is to a) build the mood b) let you know the mindset the narrator is entering the situation in and c) establish the narrator is someone so familiar with forests at midnight they can recognize it by scent
it seems like the key theme of fungus is that they eat everything including things otherwise impossible to eat, they get everywhere with their tiny spores, and they grow and be happy wherever it is wet by eating the surroundings. So if get inside your body (wet) they eat you. so your two main options for being a multicellular organism are developing an immune system (most animals) or hiring other fungus to beat the shit out of the fungus that gets inside your body (most plants)
there were times in my life when fungus tried to eat me. they try to eat most of us sometimes
yea plants do have an immune system but they also regularly merge with fungi into superorganisms so it's very different. they have complicated signalling to determine who is friend and who is enemy. meanwhile mammals are over here like "KILL EVERYTHING THAT ISN'T US!!! Fungus? Kill. Bacteria? Kill. Myself? Huh, come to think of it, my intestinal lining is looking at me funny. I never liked him." *develops autoimmune disorder*
being an animal is so cringe. cant merge with fungus into superorganism, can't reproduce vegetatively, can't photosynthesize...what are we even doing
We (animals collectively but mammals in particular) are out here tolerating outrageous climatological conditions to experience the world in time frames and spectra that plants and fungi can only dream of.
