me as a kid, bored out of my mind, grazing my hand across those old school TVs and feeling the layer of static crackle on the display and pretending like I was an undiscovered supermutant

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a gift.
autumn.Â
âi donât like either candidate so i wonât voteâ what are you thinking, if enough people wuss out weâre going to have President None Of The Above? hey weâre counting the votes and ten percent of voters stayed home and jerked it to their own ideological purity, guess we just wonât have a president and all the executive level decisions will be made by a magic 8-ball for the next 4 years
i wrote this 2 years ago and â yeah. look, letâs just learn, ok? midterms coming up, pull up your big citizen pants and go do the thing.
today in âthings iâm disproportionately emotional aboutâ:
itâs facial reconstructions of prehistoric humans!!
like, look at this part-homo sapiens, part-neandertal man from well over 30,000 years ago:
doesnât he just look like a dude youâd wanna hang out with? like he probably washes dishes in the kitchen with you, and has excellent weed
what a charming fellow. what stories he probably has to tell. iâd definitely go shoot the shit with him on Contemplation Rock after iâd finished my dayâs work carving a bone flute for the autumn hunting ceremony, or whatever
people have been people ever since people first became people, i tell you what
they all had lives and histories and families and friends and dumb gossip and games they played and total bullshit in which they believed wholeheartedly
they all argued about the nature of the world, and of themselves
they all sang songs
they all drew pictures
they all buried their dead in graves, and they buried their dead in graves well before they did a lot of that other stuff. they buried their dead with flowers, with panther claws, with the bones of animals theyâd killed, with the bones of family members who had died at the same time or earlier. they buried their dead with their arms folded across their chests
they fell in love
they took care of their old and their sick and their disabled, even when it cost them
they made new things, and worried about what the new things meant for people everywhere, as a whole
Oh I like him he looks like he would appreciate my jokes
This dude would have great stories at a get-together and would bring some really great homemade dip.Â
I feel like he really digs Lo-Fi Music
This guy was sculpted by Alfons and Adrie Kennis, and their Neanderthal reconstructions are all delightful.Â
I love the kid in the last picture a lot- they look like a kid, just a little kid whoâs done some mischief and is trying not to laugh about it.
I also adore their Lucy- theyâve struck a wonderful balance between the falling angel and the rising ape.
And their Turkana boy- thereâs something precious and wistful in those eyes.Â
But my favorite has got to be their reconstruction of H. floresiensis.
Just look at her. Thatâs a face of someone whoâs lived and seen a lot, but also a face thatâs known love and joy and laughter. Thatâs a face with a soul.Â
They are all beautiful
What an amazing work, Kennis & Kennis!Â
why⌠why is Lucy looking at me like sheâs my granny?âŚ

Black women something amazingÂ
Okay, but what professor was such an asshole that they wouldnât let a woman in labor do a makeup exam? You know someone said some shit and she felt like she HAD to do that exam, labor or no.
OK true story from one of my professors: She got pregnant while getting her PhD. Not planned, but it would work out that she would do her lit review (where she had a massive list of books she had to spend two hours talking about) a month before her baby was due. Plenty of time, right? Well, her daughter came a month early. On the day that she scheduled her lit review. So sheâs in labor with a baby thatâs four weeks early, she calls up her male professors that are going to be doing her lit review, and they say that squeezing a human being out of your vagina isnât a good enough reason to cancel. She canât reschedule, theyâll just fail her. And my professor will have none of that. They agree to have the lit review at the hospital, but they kick out all nurses and doctors because you canât have anyone else in the room. (like the nurses are really going to be secret undercover English professors who will whisper to her answers about Virginia Woolf). So for two hours while my professor was in labor, these male professors are hounding her about early 20th century British literature and the nurses are just about losing it and as soon as itâs finish they rush back in to make sure everything is okay. And the best part of it is that my professor was so focused, so determined to pass and not let her 5 years of work end in a failure, that she says she didnât feel any pain for those two hours. WHILE IN LABOR.
Fucking men. Seriously.
Men are fucking demons
Literally every woman in academia with kids I know has had to deal with some fuckery from the men in their departments during their grad school years. Itâs disgusting.

In third grade I had this teacher who would give every student the same grade on each assignment. After the A at the top of the paper, sheâd mark all the wrong answers with a red pen, and then would come by each studentâs desk to talk to us about where we went wrong. Together we would fix each sentence or math problem until it was right. At Parent night, one of the dadâs complained that his daughter worked hard to get her A, and that some of the other kids deserved to fail. The teacher allowed him to finish talking, and then responded in the same polite tone she always used in the classroom. âIâm not teaching your children how to pass test⌠Iâm guiding them on how to learn.â Months later our teacher posted everyoneâs final grade on the board, and at first, no one was surprised to see we all had Aâs. But after looking closer at our papers, and book reports, and our final assignments, we didnât see any red ink on them. I donât think we should lie to children and tell them they got it all right if they didnât. That doesnât help anyone. But I also know that if you keep telling a child they are a failure; they messed up; or they did a bad job, after a while theyâll start agreeing.
