soooo. Iâm reading The Vampire Lestat (no spoilers plz, Iâm still reading it). And I got to the chapter where Lestat turns Nicki. So I blacked out and I drew this.
Enjoy!
do shrimp farms really tear off female shrimps' eyes to make them breed faster or is that just more peta nonsense. i mean they also claim that keeping pet dogs is slavery or that sheep are skinned alive for wool so idk what to believe anymore
oh has peta gotten ahold of it now? it's a real practice, unfortunately
TL;DR: There is active research on alternatives to eyestalk ablation in shrimp as well as a major shrimp producer that does not practice it and whose products are available on four continents.
The good news is that a research study from 2016-2019 found that making a couple of breedery changes (changing the ratio of male to female shrimp and increasing food) made shrimp production as high as that of farms that practice eyestalk ablation as well as decreasing disease vulnerability. (Dr. SimĂŁo Zacarias won the 2020 Global Aquaculture Innovation Award for his study.)
A research project aimed at improving shrimp hatcheriesâ welfare practices shows there is a viable alternative to a common spawn-inducing te
The University of Stirling's SimĂŁo Zacarias is the recipient of the 2020 Global Aquaculture Innovation Award, sponsored by Lineage Logistics
The better news is that one of the major shrimp producers, Seajoy (aka Seajoy-Cooke), does not practice eyestalk ablation (and I think hasn't practiced it for over a decade, since I believe they're the company that inspired Dr. Zacarias' study). They're also at the forefront for humane slaughter methods.

So quality shrimp that have been farmed humanely are available in the Americas, Europe, and Asia under the brands Seajoy, Cjoy, Bluefield, and Seabrook as well as being repackaged for private label brands.
For those unfamiliar with the term, private label brands are companies that purchase products from other companies to sell under their branding. Think something like Trader Joe's, where every product is branded that but they are all sourced from different companies. (This is an example, I don't know which companies Seajoy sells to.)
If anyone's wondering why this worked to begin with, arthropods reach reproductive age by number of molts, rather than just passage of time, and molting is when arthropods can regenerate lost body parts.
Loss of something as important as eyes can trigger more frequent molting in crustaceans, as the body tries to hurry up and get those replaced
As a curator, all these people saying museum are expensive...the one I work at is $3 to enter. But there are also plenty of free museums in my area. If you are saying museums are expensive you need to open your eyes to the world of museums beyond big institutional ones. There are so many small, historical houses, historical parks, little art galleries, out there that are free or have small fees. There are also museums that have free or discounted days. There are museums that offer student discounts, senior discounts, military discounts, museums that offer free or discounts if you have SNAP benefits.
Almost all museum memberships have reciprocal benefits. It's a little more up front, but if you become a member at one museum (It's usually like $50 for a year) you get a membership card and there's usually a list of other museums that card will get you into for free.
Also you can always sign up to be a volunteer. Then you can look at the stuff all the time for free. I got my start 10 years ago as a volunteer, fell in love and made it my career.
also lots of public libraries keep a stock of free museum passes at the circulation desk for check out
This is a highly specific one, but if you're a Bank of America user, you get free entry into most art museums the first Saturday of every month.
Nearly all the major museums and art galleries in London are free. Theyâll probably have a few paid exhibitions and the gift shop and cafes are expensive but the actual collections are free. And amazingâŚ

Biodiversity can be achieved through executive dysfunction!
intersex people only, do you support the word hermaphrodite being used in biology to refer to animals with dual reproductive function?
Yes that's fine
No, a different term should be used (cosexual, monoecious, gonosimulite, etc)
Nuance/other (please share)
Perisex people, set a reminder to look back at the post in one week. Reblog for reach please.
[Video description: Gritty is turning the crank on a flagpole to raise the Progress Pride Flag. He gesticulates angrily that the flag is not blowing in the wind, then gestures offscreen. The flag begins blowing. As Gritty begins raising the flag more, the camera pans out to show a man in a suit and sunglasses, looking like a stern Secret Service agent, is holding a leafblower that points at the flag. End description.]

I donât have the flavor of neurodivergency needed to process this question. WTF?
I thought this was a strange question but apparently many of us have Big Feelings about this topic. I feel better.
i like my multiples of 3s. 6. 9. 12. 24. 48. A bit basic, I know. But tried and true
it's really such an experience to go from "oh this is really cool wow" to "aw man i like this so much i need to eat glass about it" i cant even pinpoint when it happened
Self indulgent art based on Ravenous, my favorite movie :> Used my drag persona as the Boyd-like figure in the center, and wanted to capture his resistance to perpetuating systems of violence (the Ives figure feeding him).
I love the way Ravenous tackles themes about colonialism and power, and they do an interesting job of connecting gender roles/ gendered expectations to why these systems perpetuate. I feel like this is most seen with Boyd: for the standards of the time, he is seen as feminine and weak (mostly due to his discomfort with violence in the military), but that really is his strength, as he fends off Iveâs temptations to give into colonialist systems (symbolized through rejecting cannibalism).
I think that this idea can often be especially pertinent to transmasc individuals, due to the way trans boys/men have to find their own standards of masculinity in a society where masculinity is often associated with violence or exertion of power.
Anyway, I used Ibis Paint to sketch and my Notes App (yes, the Apple notes app) to render.
There are so many things I love about Ravenous, and I could talk about all of them. But thatâs a lot of typing so Iâm just going to focus on one thing:
Part of what makes Boydâs ending in the bear trap so great is that he never explains himself. Of course he canât, heâs half dead, that would be impossible. But I do recognize, throughout the second half of the movie, he wants to feel understood. Heâs constantly scapegoated for the murders of his traveling party by other people, and he wants people to understand that he is not the monster, Ives is. And this is why Boyd is easy to identify with as a character: we have all had a situation where we were misinterpreted, leading to us feeling isolated and lost. No matter how large or small of an event it is, it always feels frustrating. We want Boyd to explain himself, to be believed, to have someone have his back.
However, if this happened, and people believed Boyd, especially a character like Martha, it would not work thematically. Martha has no reason to trust him: in fact, itâs Boyd trying to explain himself that first establishes this distrust. He says he didnât kill her brother, but really, why should she believe that about him? He already admitted to eating people. Any person in Marthaâs shoes, especially an indigenous woman who has seen both the curse and the corrupting force of colonial power first hand, would be suspicious.
So, Boyd doesnât need to explain himself. He doesnât need to die feeling like Martha understands heâs the âgood guyâ. He can just die knowing that sacrificing himself was the right thing to do, even if it is never recognized as sacrifice. And thatâs a beautiful thing. Because the whole story is Boyd balancing these two motivations within him: self preservation and morality. This bear trap scenario of âeat or dieâ is the ultimate choice, and he chooses morality! With no benefit to himself other than feeling like he still has a soul as he is drifting off to his death! And that can mean something for us, something for people: if youâd rather explain that youâre a good person than do the right thing, you should rethink your priorities!!
God, I love this movie so much.
