He was born to relatively old parents with the use of fertility medicine. From a lab he comes... to a lab he goes... After trying for a long time, the IVF, that reduced Ryland was the last. They were satisfied with one child and frankly it was too late to try for another. I imagine one parent being ambitious and driven with temper. The other had to keep the peace. One or both of his parents are scientist with a reputation themselves, but in a different field. They were eccentric. I mean.... They named their son Ryland... Ryland was meant to continue the work of his parents. The heir they had fight nature for. He often felt like he was more a prop to his parents, shoved around. Do this, be that. Emotionally closed off to him. They nutured the curiuosity in Ryland, but then he started to "drift off" into biology. Tension rose higher and higher until there was a big fight. Everybody said some stuff they shouldn't have. Ryland went no contact after that. They both died and Ryland could never make up his mind, if he should have reached out again.
