blood being frequently described as having a "coppery smell" in fiction is kind of funny considering that there is a metallic component to blood and it's not copper
in fact if your blood smells or tastes like copper you probably have more urgent things to worry about than it being outside your body. it's probably better that it's not inside you anymore actually.
story where blood is described as smelling or tasting "coppery" and it's actually early foreshadowing that all the characters are suffering from heavy metal poisoning
people should be allowed to have low ambition, and also be able to feed a family on the salary of a cashier at a convenience store.
And! We need cashiers. And convenience stores. And I think it's kind of broken that society says people who want to do stuff like that have "low" ambition (not you OP, I get you're using it illustratively because that's what society labels said jobs) and don't deserve to live at the same standard as people with "high" ambitions.
If we need someone to do a job, that job is a role in the community and deserves not just a salary but cultural respect for the role.
"high" ambition jobs are all jobs that involve domineering and controlling others. "low" ambition jobs are all jobs that involve service to others. Have you noticed? Because I have noticed.
But serving others is actually more needed than controlling them.

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
nasa is using a 3D world graphic for the solar eclipse thingy today where germany is still devided in east and west adjfglkafdhgadfg. buddies, it's been almost 40 years.
So I showed this to a physicist and they were like "Oh! Yes! It's a figure from Fred Espenak's very old paper where he did a bunch of eclipse graphics! I've been looking at these my entire internet life, basically, for every solar eclipse! They called him Mr. Eclipse. He just passed away recently 🥺"
Anyway apparently Mr. Eclipse made 5000 years' worth of solar eclipse graphics, which you can find the simpler versions of here
So now instead of laughing at NASA for their outdated graphics I'm emotional about Mr. Eclipse and his hard work
My mother-in-law: now listen children - the birds will go quiet as the eclipse goes on
The eclipse: (goes on)
The birds: (go quiet)
One (1) Woodpigeon, continuously: HOOOO HOOOOO HOO. HU HOOOOO HU
(translated from Wood Pigeon): "You see, children, all the other birds have gone quiet as the eclipse goes on..."

"theyre only friends" ONLY friends??? oonllyy friends??? friends is one of the most amazing things you can be
Ok, Have you in real life ever seen a bathroom that had its light switch Outside of the bathroom. Not like one of those fancy giant bathrooms where the toilet is in its own little room, but a normal sized bathroom where you could be in there doing your thing and someone Outside could just turn the light off on you?
This is so normal to me
Yeah but it's weird
Maybe? normal though.
Maybe? weird though.
No but I'm pro this being a thing
no and what the fuck why would that be a thing
Other
Button.
In Real life. not in a videogame or movie because I've Only seen it in videogames and a friend has spotted it in a movie.
In my third semester of college, I took a Shakespeare class in which our big project was a 12-minute recorded production of a Shakespeare play. Each group was maybe 4 or 5 people, so some groups had participants play two or more roles.
The Hamlet group instead had Claudius place hidden cameras in potted plants and pat the leaves saying, "I'll call you 'Rosenplantz' and you 'Guildenfern.'"
It was very clever wordplay and my favorite part of all the productions, so now and then I doodle them bc it makes me giggle.
I’ve been thinking about how often we see stories about people getting out of an awful situation and being surrounded with support and care and getting to move on and recover.
But what if they don’t. They’ve spent god knows how long in their own personal hell, captivity, torture, isolation. For what felt like an eternity, they held onto the idea of finally being freed, rescued, released. And one day it just happens. Political pressure, a hostage exchange, a rescue. Whatever happens, one day they’re just free.
But they come home and everything’s different. They never had a huge network to begin with, and now the people who still care just don’t know how to deal with them and their trauma. It’s all too much. They’re not the person they used to be, the person their friends used to love.
Sure, they’ve been given medical treatment for their obvious wounds but the doctors just don’t seem to understand them when they say that there’s a pain that never quite goes away. They’ve had the mandatory counselling, but the therapist’s empty platitudes made them feel all the more disconnected from their reality.
For so long, they waited for this. But now it feels like their past is an impossible weight on their chest, never letting them move forward. People tell them that they have their future ahead of them, but they can’t help but wonder if they should have just died there.
Thisss. For those who have actually been held in captivity/gone through harrowing experiences like we see in whump, the process of reintegrating into the world can be incredibly bleak. Especially in the first months or years after escape, when they're dealing with the worst of their trauma. Especially when the life they had before seems so far out of reach, and the isolation kicks in.
The world they're in now doesn't match the one they just survived.
Actual recovery is slow. And grinding, and grey, and hollow. It doesn't happen overnight. Sometimes it feels like it will never will.
But eventually it does. In little moments, alone in the kitchen at 6am watching birds outside the window. In the quiet company of strangers on the bus. In little gleams of laughter that, for only a moment, feel like flashes of something you had before you were hurt. In conversations that gradually become more effortless and more comfortable, until you realize that for a few minutes, you weren't faking your interest.
Recovery isn't always walking out into the sunlight. Sometimes it's being awake through the night, and slowly watching the dawn turn the sky into shades of silver and pink until at last— at last— you feel the very first gleams of daylight on your skin. It's ups and downs that make you feel like you're slipping back into the grey and darkness. But then the sunlight starts coming out more often. Inconsistent, unpredictable, until one day you look back and realize that it hasn't been dark for days.
Recovery is not immediate. Moving on is very, very far from linear. But these stories, these recovery arcs, are the ones that are the most powerful and meaningful of them all.

having such an obvious favorite character trope is life ruining bro
i can’t say shit about liking a character that acts slightly in a very specific way without being hit with a tidal wave of “of course you would” to live is to suffer
#for what it's worth#I love being able to look at a character and think “oh my friend would LOVE them” (via prev)

Do you think when Cecil Baldwin said the lines “Sleep heavily and know that I am here with you now. The past is gone, and cannot harm you anymore. And while the future is fast coming for you, it always flinches first and settles in as the gentle present. This now, this us? We can cope with that” he knew he was about to change my life forever?

We need to isolate and start selectively breeding the plastic eating bacteria so we can optimise their efficiency, and then somehow splice their DNA into the gut bacteria of an obligate carnivore, so we can put it in our cats gut biomes so they'll finally be free of having to choose between whether they want to eat plastic or whether they want to live.
Just saw the interview where Curry Barker explained that it's totally possible to get a normal wish from the One Wish Willow, and I love the way they did that so much. The reason Obsession happened isn't because it's trying to twist Bear's desires into something evil. It's not even because he phrased his want wrong. Obsession happened because Bear got his hands on a magic item that could do anything in existence, and chose to force someone to fall in love with him, which is an inherently evil thing to do.
yeah like. There's no way to fulfill that wish that isn't horrific. Basically the only solution that doesn't override someone's free will is the actual monkeys paw answer, which is killing off anyone and everyone she loves more than him.
