Luke 7:36-48, 50 One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to have dinner with him, so Jesus went to his home and sat down to eat. When a certain immoral woman from that city heard he was eating there, she brought a beautiful alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume. Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping. Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them.
When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, âIf this man were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. Sheâs a sinner!â
Then Jesus answered his thoughts. âSimon,â he said to the Pharisee, âI have something to say to you.â
âGo ahead, Teacher,â Simon replied.
Then Jesus told him this story: âA man loaned money to two peopleâ500 pieces of silver to one and 50 pieces to the other. But neither of them could repay him, so he kindly forgave them both, canceling their debts. Who do you suppose loved him more after that?â
Simon answered, âI suppose the one for whom he canceled the larger debt.â
âThatâs right,â Jesus said. Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, âLook at this woman kneeling here. When I entered your home, you didnât offer me water to wash the dust from my feet, but she has washed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You didnât greet me with a kiss, but from the time I first came in, she has not stopped kissing my feet. You neglected the courtesy of olive oil to anoint my head, but she has anointed my feet with rare perfume.
âI tell you, her sinsâand they are manyâhave been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.â Then Jesus said to the woman, âYour sins are forgiven.â
And Jesus said to the woman, âYour faith has saved you; go in peace.â
Sometimes we think our many sins and transgressions are so horrible and so many of us end up thinking that salvation is just beyond our reach, but Jesus tells us that there is no such thing. All we have to do is show love towards Christ to be saved. How can we show love towards Christ? By reading and obeying His Word, which is the Bible.
Other times we are like Simon the Pharisee and judge someone based on their past even though they are a new creation through Christ. We forget to look at the new and we focus on the old. The Lord never focus on who we were before we came to Him and neither should we.
Simon the Pharisee did not see the woman as she was (a humble sinner seeking forgiveness, pouring out love for Jesus) because he looked at her as she had been (a notorious sinner). It can be so hard for us to truly believe that we are forgiven; often, we must be persuaded of it, and the Lord does just that.
The key to her forgiveness was faith - it was her faith that saved her because it was her faith that believed the words from Jesus, your sins are forgiven. Faith enabled her to take the grace God gave to her. Forgiveness is ready from God; there is no hesitation or shortage on His part. Our part is to come with humility and loving submission to Jesus and to receive the forgiveness He offers by faith.
Jesusâ point is that the person who realizes how great of a gift forgiveness is (because they have a deep sense of sin) has a great love for the one who forgives, that is, God. The womanâs acts of reverence to Jesus honored Him as the one who brought Godâs message of grace.
The apostle Paul also reminds us that our past sins no longer dictate who we are. Paul wrote: âDonât you know that the unrighteous will not inherit Godâs kingdom? Do not be deceived: No sexually immoral people, idolaters, adulterers, or anyone practicing homosexuality, no thieves, greedy people, drunkards, verbally abusive people, or swindlers will inherit Godâs kingdom. And some of you used to be like this. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.â Even though those fellow Christians USED to sin like that they donât anymore. Paul telling them âsome of you used to be like thisâ lets them know their past do not influence their present. They have changed and no longer seek sin but rather holiness as they have been sanctified and justified by the Lord.
Be like that woman and love Him, despite your many sins. Donât allow your past to dictate your future. We will always be sinners and we might have a horrible past, thatâs something we canât change, but once we accept Him into our lives and hearts we will have the Holy Spirit to convict us of sin and we will choose a higher path, a path of holiness. As 1 Peter 1:16 tells us, âSince it is written, âYou shall be holy, for I am holy.ââ
