There are two types of writers:
1. 'It's fiction, it doesn't need to make sense!'
2. 'I didn't account for the rotation of the planet and how that affects the constalations while my characters stargazed at different times of year, I have failed as a writer, and this entire thing is trash'
#why is this so true tho#i'm over here calculating the exact stardate and what klingon festivals are happening around that time#what type of positronics data and lore have
I also spend ridiculous amounts of time calculating exact stardates of holidays, festivals, and wrestling with the likely time a conversation took so I know what time to tag the conversation in the adjoining scene. Or how long it would take to get from main engineering to the bridge. Or warp between planets.
And here's the thing...the show didn't even do that. The actual canon doesn't exist in reasonable time and space. Turbolifts and warp drives move at the speed of plot. We know this. We know it's not possible to have a single, fully-canonical Star Trek map because they flew around doing what they needed to do in the time needing to do it, not beholden even to their own made-up physics, let alone real physics.
And yet....AND YET....
Here I sit, calculating stardates, plotting out how many days it must've taken to get between worlds versus dates stated in show in the captain's log and accounting for whether or not warp limits are in place following Force of Nature before that issue is apparently resolved later. Here's me poring over the blueprints to figure out where this canon room is, even though I know it had two different deck/room numbers across the series. Here I sit working out minutia that no fic reader will ever notice.
Why?
Because I can no more stop calculating accuracy than Data can.
We climb it because it is there.
I know I’ve made it in the Star Trek fandom now 🫡
We stan any and all Trek OCs in this house. 🫡
hiya! i'm a big fan of what you've done with your rebranding on this blog, and i think fandom overall benefits from little spaces of positivity like this. if i may ask, what made you change your mind about the branding?
Character growth~ ✨
No, but really. There was nothing to be gained by mocking other people's OCs. We were all young and silly once. Turns out I love them, actually.
HELL YEAH!!!!

I am actually so serious I think it really messes with a childs creativity and joy to tell them to never make a mary sue OC. Like that unbridaled form of joy where you make a self insert OC who super cool and everyone loves them and they have every superpower in the world SHOULD be something a kid makes, it nourishes their ability to create things for fun and not be stifled by "oh but what if my character is too overpowered and cringey...". whatever
hi! do you consider ocs related to canon characters to automatically be mary sues? i know a lot of them do in fact turn out to be one, but i’d like to know what your opinion is on people who actually do try to make it make sense. me being one of them.
Nah, I think they can be good characters! It doesn't automatically make them a Sue.
Helpful Resources
Memory-Alpha is the official Star Trek wiki, which is exceedingly well run and has articles for everything you can think of.
Memory-Beta is the wiki for Star Trek secondary canon (novels, comics, video games, etc.) and a good resource for finding additional information on something that isn’t covered much in canon.
TrekCore has high quality screencaps from every series, as well as audio clips, ship schematics, and more.
Star Trek Minutiae has a lot of things, including fonts, logos, scripts, a warp speed calculator, and starship size comparisons.
Ship Schematics has more images and schematics for ships than you would ever think existed.
Cygnus-X1 also has a lot of detailed schematics.
Chakoteya has episode transcripts from every series.
Not only will I ship an OC with a canon character, I WILL change the plot to make it happen.
Now, THIS is what I’m talking about!!!!
Repeat after me, kids:Â
Fanfiction is not now nor ever will be a waste of time, uncreative, or automatically inferior to canon.Â
It is an invaluable tool that enriches fandom and allows authors to build their creative chops in a setting that encourages feedback and communal discussion.Â
In some cases, fandoms with disappointing canon material can be kept alive solely through the work of dedicated fan-authors, fan-artists, and other content creators.
Do not let anyone suggest that fan-work is without value.Â

Hai :3. I was just hoping if you could give my OC a review maybe..? Whatever trait you find kind of irksome just point it out and that’ll be great. :D And I apologize in advance- its gonna be a long one. ^_^’
Name: Coreen Sheppard Rowell
Species: Human
Sexuality: Pan
Ship: Formerly the USS Farragut but she was transferred to the USS EnterpriseÂ
Department: Security
Personality: Coreen is a usually quiet and reserved person. She’s the type of person who doesn’t keep to themselves but doesn’t make the first move when it comes to socializing. This sometimes makes tension high or the atmosphere awkward.Â
She’s very professional during work and stern- being the Chief of Security and all. Although being stern doesn’t mean that she’s too strict. She’s albeit lenient when it comes to strengthening a person’s weakness during training. Although she’s kind of strict when it comes to the rules, being one to follow the books. She’ll only break the rules when necessary.Â
Coreen is laid-back and a lot more sociable with her friends and family but still doesn’t initiate conversations although she’s a good listener as well as advice giver. She knows when to have fun and when to stop.
Bio: Coreen was born and raised in Manchester, England. Her father served in the British Army til he reached the rank of a first star general. Her mother on the other hand is a licensed physician with a PhD. She has no troubles with her parents- she’s actually quite close to them being the only child and all. Coreen enlisted in the British Army when she was eighteen and served for twelve years. She spent eight years being active the rest as inactive. It took her two years to be once more accustomed to the civilian life. She suffers from PTSD but it had quieted down during those two years. Of course certain things still trigger her PTSD. Coreen was thirty-two when her uncle, Lt. Arnold Sheppard, approached her about joining the Starfleet Academy. She had considered this when she was younger but found it a bit too ambitious then. Coreen accepted and enrolled the next month after thinking it over. She finished in three years and was assigned to the USS Farragut with her uncle. She stayed aboard the USS Farragut as Security for two years and became a Lieutenant. A year later, USS Enterprise requested a transfer for her to become the Chief of Security there.
Likes: Dogs; Sweet food; Mixing Paint; the smell of a fresh canvas; stargazing; the calm silence Dislikes: Extremely loud/ surprising noises; extremely crowded areas; Unorganized objects; having to give a speech in front of an audience
Thank you so much! And again I’m sorry if I spammed you with a wall of trash.
MOD: Hi, sorry for the VERY late reply! Honestly? I love her. My only nitpick is the part about her father being in the British Army. In the future of Star Trek, Earth is no longer at war with itself, humanity having left war behind them. It has been hundreds of years since WWIII and as far as I know, there weren’t any major wars since then. Earth is nearly a utopia, since humans learned to live in peace with each other. Maybe one of her ancestors fought in the old wars, instead of her father?
Triple hello anon here again XD. I was just wondering if you guys do OC critics/critiques? (Idk how to spell XD).
Absolutely! But only if it is your OWN character.
Question: since I’ve noticed that pretty much all the species in the Trekverse have some kind of extreme ideology or motive(logic, business, honor, perfection, etc) I was thinking of making one that focuses on positivity, but pushed to extremes. Negativity is frowned upon, and any disagreement is settled through reason. It might seem perfect at first, but underneath is a dystopian government and a society not allowed to express basic feelings. What do you think?
That sounds like an awesome concept! Go for it!
literally theres nothing stopping you guys from shipping ur ocs with canon characters go off the shits my dudesÂ
honestly? starting to flip the canvas during the drawing process improved my art so much yeehaw
top 10 art tips from chaboy in no particular order:Â
1. canvas flipping good even if painfulÂ
2. draw whatever makes u happy. be self indulgent. draw nonsense that caters to only you personallyÂ
3. just fucking fake being able to draw things like hands and eventually you can actually do it without even thinking about itÂ
4. take breaks when it doesn’t come out rightÂ
5. remember that you’re the god of this reality and can draw WHATEVER THE FUCK. be absolutely drunk with power. nobody can stop you. unless its like morally wrong like dont draw incest or whatever. incest is bad still
6. use referencesÂ
7. originality is a myth and literally every artist started copying their style from something or someone, that’s how you develop your own style. everyone does it. people who make fun of kids for copying the styles of their favourite shows/artists can chokeÂ
10. litchrally just have funÂ

NEW RULES.
Turning over a new leaf
This blog has been scrubbed of all content used without the artist/author’s permission. I don’t want to make fun of people’s characters behind their backs anymore. This is something that has been weighing heavily on my mind lately, and it’s good to finally have it gone instead of hanging over my head.
Moving forward, we will still accept submissions for OC critique, as long as YOU are the person who created the character.
Thank you for following! Now GO. CREATE SUES. HAVE FUN.
