Wanted to try my hand at comparing Book Rocky vs Movie Rocky. At first I was much more partial to movie Rocky (having seen it first), but now that I've read the book I think I'm fonder of his design and character in the book more! I thought it would be fun to combine my favorite attributes from both into one design.
And then I had a lot of fun with it and it spiraled into drawing a bunch of random Eridians and a design for Adrian. I just think they are very neat (and very fun to draw)!!

Something else I see people keep forgetting: between humans and Eridians, we are the astronauts. And we are good at it.
Eridians' perception of the world relies on something that is completely absent in space â sound. They haven't been looking at the stars their entire existence the way we have. Their concept of aliens might only be as old as their discovery of astrophage. They made a bad ship, because it was their first one ever! Rocky himself says they rushed it, and that multiple (vital) things broke. Their mission was just as much of a Hail Mary pass as ours was â they had no idea what they were doing, if they could even travel in space safely. And, as it turns out, they couldn't.
Humans are the ones who have been doing it over multiple lifetimes. Mary is state of the art. We've been space farers longer than most humans have been alive. We can actually see through space. We are more likely to survive exposure to the void. We can encase our lighter, more flexible, more mobile bodies in a material that lets us walk outside of our ship, and, to a degree, we can get our bearings out there in a way Eridians just can't.
Eridians are not looking at Mary and thinking she's a bad ship. They are not thinking humans have no idea what we're doing. They are looking at this species that can walk in the stars, have been perfecting machines to take us to them for decades, have been dreaming about them and mapping them and naming them for millennia, and used all of that to save them, and thinking, wow.
At some point on the journey back to Erid, Rocky gets around to asking Grace exactly why he was so mesmerised by seeing the astrophage in the Petrova line.
Grace describes it as best he can, but all he can really manage to get across to Rocky is that he was surrounded by small floating lights.
Later on, Grace is talking about the stars and how important they've been to human cultures for millennia. âWhat do the stars look like, question?â Rocky wants to know.
Oh, y'know, they're a bunch of small floating lights.
There's a disco ball on the Hail Mary. Grace says it's there because it âmakes me happyâ. âHow does it make Grace happy, question?â Rocky wants to know.
Oh, it creates the illusion that he's surrounded by small floating lights.
Rocky begins to do some research.
Glitter: a substance invented by humans to make things look like they're covered in small lights.
Human jewellery: mostly involves gemstones or polished metals, designed to reflect small lights.
Christmas lights. Candles. Lanterns. Fireworks. Glowsticks. Glow in the dark paint. Rocky is beginning to notice a pattern here, statement.
It takes Grace a fucking while after getting to Erid to notice that a lot of the gifts he's receiving from grateful Eridians are either a) sparkly, b) incredibly shiny, or c) fitted with lights.
While the last one is obviously a concession for his human light sense, he's confused about the former two. Are Eridian materials usually this shiny? Is there some quality about sparkly or highly polished surfaces that makes them sound better? Or is there something about Eridian geology/metallurgy that makes their materials like this?
He asks Rocky about it.
âSimple. I tell people humans like lots of small lights. Humans are easy to make happy.â
Grace kind of wants to protest that humans are much more complicated than that.
But honestly⌠it fucking works. Like yeah the polished gemstones, shiny metals and glittery rocks are beautiful. Yes those Christmas lights you put up around the house did markedly improve my mental health, Rocky. Thank you, I hate it.
Grace spends a lot of time trying not to think about whether his species' urge to explore the cosmos (that saved their planet and nearly killed him several times) is tied to the same instinct that made his students like glitter gel pens.

i like to think he didnât want it at first out of self punishment but after some time he heals internally AND externally (and also with enough convincing from grace and rocky) he caves in. and it feels nice

i really really really love the idea of eridians hearing absolutely everything in a human body and being able to predict an episode of something, similarly to how medical alert service dogs can
i think that if grace begins to seize, it would be because of the amnesia cocktail they loaded him with. they didnt know what it would do to him when they used it, it hadn't been experimented with extensively. i dont know the exact science behind seizures, but i can buy that if there was anything that caused seizures, it would be That.
rocky's pissed off when he comes to this conclusion. even more angry than beforeâ before it was a sense of betrayal, from feeling grace's betrayal, but now it's infuriation. he could cope with them sending him up here, as cruel as it was, he's a selfish eridian. he cant fathom a life without his grace. he wants nothing more than to keep him.
now its twisted into fury, for them hurting grace permanently. it becomes all consuming when grace wakes up, confused and typically crying, after a seizure. an eridian is built to be several steps ahead, their crystalline brains built for this purpose. but there are no steps to take to heal this completely
my friend told me about bloodymary and I thought for about a week "haha this is so weird people are so weird why would anyone do this"
fast forward two months I have over 200 bloodymary fanart/edits saved to my google photos and my bookmarks are ridden with bloodymary ao3 fics. where the hell am I
Itâs basically what happened to me, i watched iron lung then went on TikTok to look up some edits and fanart, found out about Bloodymary and thought âhaha Markiplier and Ryan Gosling, what a silly comboâ.
Stratt looking at the recordings Grace made, going throught it, all of them, waiting for the answer to the problem plagging humanity, listening to him rambling, science, science, astrophage, science...
"So! I met an alien."
Oh he's hearing voices. He went mad. Okay. "We are trying to communicate". whatever.
Still going through the recordings, science, science, astrophage, science, I named it Rocky okay, science... he cope by inventing a friend I guess, he still look lucid enough for the mission so, we are still good, aren't we...
And then the alien actually shows up on screen "Hi, I'm Rocky, Rocky from Erid, I am not Rocky from movie no no no"
Her, alongside any person watching this, would be FLOORED XD

I know you said you didn't have much else planned after she gets back home, but I wanted to ask if any other members of the cult have attempted to track her down and assassinat her, or something of the sort? :3
If I had to guess, probably not. The people in this cult were mostly young and impressionable, much like Ashley, and so a lot of them would be very afraid of the whole idea of their leader being killed. Not to mention, Lizard definitely sold himself as this big, indestructible guy. (Yes, on top of it all heâs a narcissist. Everyone hates Lizard in this household.)
Donât get me wrong, the cult is big and thereâs definitely a lot of outrage, but a lot of fear, too. Because he was the glue holding them all together, eventually, this cult falls apart. The followers either just flat out disappeared, or bled into neighboring cults surrounding Abrith (because like I said, thereâs quite a few of them.)
Eventually, I think some would get the idea to do it, but theyâd be dissuaded for a few reasons. Other than what I mentioned before, fear and such, another is the fact Ashley and Lizard were a couple, so Ashley was also heavily idolized in this cult. She wasnât on the same level as Lizard was, he didnât want to share that attention, but when dating a Prophet, some of that fame bleeds over.
But more than that, I feel like Kore would eventually come looking for her. When a giant blue Baphos demon comes walking up to your door demanding to know where his daughter is, thatâd be pretty scary!
Overall, I think her life at home would be.. surprisingly uneventful. Perfect, some would say. Which, in Ashleyâs head, makes it even worse the fact she canât find closure. Everything is finally going right, for the first time in her life. And she canât enjoy it.
I dunno, I love Ashley so MUCH but god I canât let her catch a break. Anyway, thank you for the ask!! :D
Itâs been a while since I mentioned my Dad!Kore au but I maaaayyyy or may not have given him another daughter. And maaaayyyy it may not have made her lore way too upsetting. Somewhere in there may involve a False Prophet. I probably will never bring this up again because I must go be swallowed up by project Hail Mary once again. Goodbye.
Okay I lie. I rlly want to rant about her. This one is long, so BUCKLE TF UP!!
Also, Minor Trigger warning: Very brief mentions of abuse. Like a sentence or few. I didnât want to get into that whole thing in this specific post.
I went very on the speculative side of genetics, (aka I completely ignored them) so sheâs basically just a Baphos demon. Kore did not let ANY of Ameliaâs genetics through on neither of the daughters.
Instead of ice as he element, I went with fire. She looks like the stereotypical demon, kind of. Black hair, black, twisting horns, red skin, black eyes. I named her Ashley because, yknow. Fire. But her powers are much more uncontrollable than Kore, but Iâll get to that eventually!
She was bullied HORRIBLY from a very young age. Because of the fact she looked like a stereotypical demon, and all the kids said she was bad luck and evil and yada yada. She was very insecure about it, and hid it from Kore and Amelia because she was afraid. The only person who actually knew about the bullying was her big sister. (which, I donât think I ever mentioned, but her name is Namib, which is a desert in Africa. Thank you to my lovely moot @suzyisgone for the name recommendation, even if it was literally months ago.) Namib was just a few years older than Ashley though, so she was also incredibly young. Ashely begged and begged and begged her not to tell their parents, and so Namib didnât.)
Anyway, this caused a lot of problems and trouble for Ashely as she grew. She eventually stepped up to the bullying in the only way she felt was appropriate; violence. Not a good thing when her magic is incredibly uncontrollable. From that, she learned the only way to survive, was to be aggressive.
Anyway, about her magic. Itâs naturally a bit stronger than Korea, not for any reason other than it just is. But itâs more uncontrollable because Kore doesnât really know how to teach her to use it. Unlike Namib, whose element matches his own, Ashley had fire. Kore tried his best to be supportive and patient and such with Ashley, but she never got the hang of it. It leaves her very unpredictable.
Yeah, anyway. Life goes on. Yada yada. Teenage phase, Ashely is 16 and very moody, her powers are unpredictable, and the bullying is still bad, and sheâs violent. An accident happens, her powers go out in control, she injures Namib badly in her outburst. Theyâd always had a special bond so this scars her irreversibly, and also confirms that what her bullyâs say are true. Sheâs a monster. If she had stuck around, she wouldâve found that the burns were so light they barely even scarred. But she didnât. She ran and got the midnight train out of there.
Things get kinda messy and rushed here because I havenât rlly thought on it too much, but she eventually ends up in the Abyss. Years go by where sheâs just nearly scraping by. Battle after battle after battle. At some point she has to cauterize her own neck wound so she wouldnât bleed out. Yeah she had to cauterize a lot of things, actually. Lots of scars and burns and such. The entire time she just wants to go home, but she canât get herself too.ďżź
Eventually, she gets involved in some kind of cult/religious group, which Iâm gonna have to go into a deep dive of the Abyss in this au.
Basically, the Abyss is back to how it used to be before Abriths rein, where itâs just the strongest demons for themselves. Idk how it got this way, but it did. But many of the big demon lords still have little cult followings, and even so even though Abrith is gone, because he literally RULED the Abyss for a time, he has quite the few cults around him. Some things even got mixed up, and some believe instead of just being a demon lord, he was a GOD. Anyway, hope you see where this is going.
Kore had kept his past a closely guarded secret from his kids, especially the whole religious deal, but SOME of it had to be spilled. Anyway, when Ashley heard about this following, at first sheâs simply interested because it reminds her of her father (who, letâs be clear, she misses DEARLY), but eventually she really gets into it. As all cults do, it manipulated her into thinking she had a proper purpose. Plus, the fact everyone in said cult were demons just like her was very comforting.
It gets even more fucked up than her being in some Abrith cult when the False Prophet thing shows up. I donât have a name for this guy, so weâll just call him Lizard for now. Heâs not a lizard folk, but like half dragon born and half human. I havenât rlly decided. I wanted him to be a freak of nature, but Iâm not good enough at dnd to make up my own race. Anyway, heâs fairly tan, short black hair, slanted green eyes, and always wears like a cartoonishly evil smile, because he literally IS CARTOONISHLY EVEIL. He has many patches of scales and a very long, reptilian tail. Like fr that thing can be a whip.
Lizard takes a particular liking in Ashleyâwho is now around 25â (mentally/human age. I head cannon Baphos demons age differently, not to mention the half elf and little bit of hyena in Ashleyâs blood), for no reason other than she is very young and vulnerable. This is around the time their relationship starts.
Itâs incredibly abusive, mentally and sexually. I wonât be getting into the nitty gritty stuff this time, but the rundown is that Lizard very much used Ashleyâs insecurities against her, making her think she was a monster just like her bullies did, but it was okay because they were all monsters here. He basically manipulated her into thinking sheâd only be accepted in this creepy cult.
Bunch of stuff happens, but eventually Ashley gets suspicious of this entire Abrith thing. Again, in the years since Abriths fall many things have gotten mixed up, and itâs thought heâs a god, the one that gave the demons magic. Ashely eventually uncovers the truth in an ancient ruin where she finds a mural of the demons receiving blood magic, and it is in fact not Abrith that gave it to them and oh shit is that HER UNCLE??
She doesnât bring it up in front of the entire cult though, instead she waits until she gets alone with Lizardâidk if I mentioned this but he like runs the cult. Entire âFalse Prophetâ thing. Things go to shit quickly. Lizard is essentially burned alive.
Also, though I might add here Ashley has her own version of Koreâs âhardcoreâ mode, because Iâm pretty sure thatâs an inherent Baphos trait rather than a Kore thing. One of the biggest triggers for her is the smell of burning flesh, because of when she initially hurt Namib all those years ago. So when things got physical with Lizard, she just.. blacked out, woke up and he was dead.
Thatâs kinda all i got right now. I know I eventually want her to go home, but I can say for sure sheâll never fully heal. She has dinners with Kore and Amelia, who very much missed their baby girl. She finally faces Namib for the first time after the accident, and life goes on. She never feels like she can see Rooster again, and tries to avoid that whole thing. The mural really freaked her out, but sheâs too afraid to ask anyone about anything.
She never fully finds closure, but sheâs back with her mom and dad again. Thatâs all she really wanted.
Questions are welcome! Idk if Iâd have an answer for them, or whenâs I even get to them, but theyâre still welcome. Makes me happy to know people care enough to wonder about my stuff. Also none of this was read back over, I just dumped all this then hit post. Ignore all and every spelling mistake. Pls. Or Iâll cry.
