I just binged my way through a Netflix original series, and I am so confused right now. See, I clicked on this for shits and giggles because brain weasels were being too noisy, and I was baffled by the preview because on the one hand, it REALLY hit the mark for my delight in dumb action series, on the other, it looked gory and like it had a LOT of potential to hit some pretty serious squicks.
Now, there was a bunch of second hand embarrassment early on that was rough. Also gore, but Iโve a low threshold for that.
But boy, did I enjoy the heck out of that. Thereโs found family. Thereโs a trans actress as a recurring character, and an absolutely lovely scene with her about appearances and finding oneself โ and never once is it mentioned that the character and actress are trans. She just is, itโs never noted at all, itโs never a plot point, itโs like how a random character is blond or has certain color eyes.
Thereโs another bit later on, where a character comes out as a lesbian โ never blatantly, explicitly stated, justโฆpresented to the audience as fact. Gently, sideways, and โ I think, and I hope? โ respectfully. Never to score points, just as a moment between her and another character, as a natural evolution of the plot.
Oh yeah, thereโs a plot, too!
It passes the Bechdel test. The vast majority of the characters are people of color, it doesnโt take place in America, and it explicitly calls out the kind of bullshit feminism that Buffy endured, though not by name โ just making a point of scorning the mythos where men โgiftโ great power to a woman without ever getting consent, and then maintain positions of power over them.
I never, ever expected this from a series called Warrior Nun.
But Iโm desperately hoping for a season two.
