one of my favorite recurring themes on tumblr is when someone starts watching supernatural for the first time thinking "they can't possibly be that gay in the actual show" only to find that they were even gayer in the actual show
no fr i was like iām gonna watch this but i will #Not be biased towards random yaoi just because the girlies see two dudes and automatically think they should be together (and honestly #same) And then four episodes in in s4 i was like āyeah theyāre in love with each otherā
i find it soo funny when haters say sasuke never cared about naruto. first of all the whole point of the show was that sasuke cared about naruto So Much that he HAD to kill him (and he could never really go through w itā¦hmmmā¦) and second of all heās literally just a tsundere like ānaruto doing all that when he and sasuke were never friendsā WRONG. Loud incorrect buzz. that man would do anything for naruto he just nonchalant and a little bit crazy like that

Hi im a samgirl and i dont mind if others feel differently about this but if you are interested in a samgirl perspective, the short story to sam's allegorical queerness is that sam grew up feeling fundamentally different from his family. He felt that there was something dirty or unclean about himself which is how a lot of marginalized queer children feel growing up. It's not that queerness itself is monstrous but that society and the patriarchal family unit will cast queerness as the monstrous Other, which is why monstrosity is a pretty common queer allegory.
I keep getting asks about queer Sam and I'm not sure exactly why, other than people maybe assume I have a strong opinion about it. The simple truth is that I just don't find what's said about it compelling so it doesn't interest me. I have no issue with other people exploring it and don't have any desire to ruin anyone's fun. It's just that I don't personally see it when I dig deeper than the surface level of "he felt different" and examine why and exactly what Sam actually wanted and why he felt that way. I will get into that here to an extent I guess because I was asked in another piece of mail what my opinions were, but I don't intend it as an "argument" to start a fight or to dismantle anyone else's perceptionājust an explanation of my personal lack of interest in this particular type of meta.
First, I don't think "Sam grew up feeling fundamentally different from his family" works for me as a queer meta when the reason Sam felt "fundamentally different" was thatāaccording to his own early framingāhe was the normal one trapped in a family of freaks who wanted him to be a freak like them.
Sam says in 1.08 that he felt different from Dean and John, but when we read on to see why, he says it's because he wanted to play soccer instead of being a child soldier.
SAM Because I didn't wanna bowhunt or hustle pool - because I wanted to go to school and live my life, which, to our whacked-out family, made me the freak. DEAN Yeah, you were kind of like the blonde chick in The Munsters.
For people too young to get "the blonde chick in The Munsters", Dean is referring to Marilyn Munster, who was the one "normal" person in a family of monsters in a 1960s sitcom.
In childhood flashbacks in 4.13, Sam refuses to fight Dirk at first even though he could easily best him using the skills he learned from their father.
YOUNG DEAN That's right, you don't. You could have torn him apart. So why didn't you? YOUNG SAM Because I don't want to be the freak for once, Dean. I want to be normal.
In both situations, Sam views his family and what they do as freakish and wants to distinguish himself as the one normal one trapped in a family of monsters who is at threat of becoming like them by pure association and family pressure.
YOUNG SAM Yeah, my, aah -- my dad's a mechanic. So I have to be a mechanic, too. MR. WYATT Do you want to go in the family business, Sam? YOUNG SAM No one's ever asked me that before. MR. WYATT Well? YOUNG SAM More than anything, no.
In 5.16 Dark Side of the Moon, one of Sam's greatest childhood memories is getting to sit down for Thanksgiving dinner in a normal, upper middle class household instead of sitting around with "A bucket of extra-crispy and Dad passed out on the couch."
In 1.01, he says he wants to be nothing like his family. He says he is normal unlike them when Dean is telling him they're the same:
DEAN You can pretend all you want, Sammy. But sooner or later you're going to have to face up to who you really are. SAM And who's that? DEAN You're one of us. SAM No. I'm not like you. This is not going to be my life.
Sam sees the upbringing that he has in common with Dean as something almost... humiliatingāto the point that he plans to lie to Jess forever about how he was raised and about his family (1.01).
All of this to say... when the queer allegory I'm being sold is that a guy is queer because he wants to go to college, get married, have 2.5 kids, go no contact with his brother (because Dean isn't normal like him?), and lie about his family to his friends because the idea of them knowing he didn't grow up normal is embarrassing... I don't feel like I'm reading a queer allegory. I'd be more likely to think that if anything, I'm reading a comedy from the POV of "the token straight" who initially functions (in the Pilot) as the "normal" character to introduce the "normal" audience to an "abnormal" world in a relatable, palatable way.
That said, when we embrace the fact that the Winchesters are a family of freaks, there is an easy counterpoint here which is that Sam's attitude in the beginning of the series represents being closeted and desperately trying to assimilate with normal society and be perceived as just like everybody else... and his freak family is in the way. In this case, Sam knows deep down that he is like his family (i.e. queer) but desperately wishes he wasn't so that he could fit in. Given that I'm a big believer in Sam being a hunter through and through despite his occasional denials, I find this much more compelling than the argument that Sam feeling othered in his family because he sees himself (at least at first) as the one normal one makes him queer.
*One of you shaking me back and forth*
"But PKāWHAT ABOUT THE DEMON BLOOD?!?!"
Yeah yeah yeah. While it doesn't start out that way, eventually, Sam does reflect on his childhood and see himself as Megamind instead of Marilyn Munster. This is retroactive though (in my opinion. I do not actually believe Sam could "sense" his dormant powers) after finding out that Azazel dropped blood into his mouth when he was a baby. Instead of feeling like the normal one in a family of freaks, Sam starts to feel like the biggest freak in the family, and Dean's "I'm a freak too" suddenly feels like platitudes. Deanāwhose calls Sam didn't pick up for yearsāstarts to seem like the normal oneāthe good oneābetween them. Dean is the hero character, the righteous man, the sword of heaven... and Sam thinks in his worst moments that he is someone Hero!Dean should be duty bound to kill (2.11). These are all feelings that (againāin my opinion) develop later. I talk about Sam's feelings of otherness and why he actually had those feelings and how I think the demon blood erroneously comes into play as an explanation for his insecurities here.
I think it probably also makes sense to mention here that the idea that Sam was treated as a monster by his family is very very overstated by portions of fandom. I'm not saying Sam never had reason to feel different or othered or unloved or neglectedāhe absolutely did (as did Dean). I am saying that people like to write about things that never actually happened when they talk about how Sam was treated growing up. Sam felt different from his family because John let Dean start hunting when he was younger than Sam, then he felt different because he wanted to play soccer and go to school while John wanted him to hunt, and because he thought Dean enjoyed being a parentified child and being raised like a soldier and Sam didn't. Retroactively, Sam feels different when he finds out he has powers. These do not develop until he is an adult, and it is never indicated to us that John knew about any of this when Sam was growing upāmuch less treated him differently growing up because of it. Retroactively, Sam believes Dean sees him as a freak for having visions even though Dean repeatedly treats his visions as no big deal and psychics are an accepted and trusted group within the hunter community (see: Missouri, Pam, Fred). Retroactively, Sam feels different because he was fed blood as a baby. He did not know this until he was an adult, and neither did Dean, as far as we know, neither did John. Sam never believes that Dean would act on John's last whispered command (that againādoes not transpire until Sam is an adult) to the point that he repeatedly tries to guilt Dean into promises to follow through and carry out John's will. Retroactively, Sam feels like a freak in season 4 because Sam chooses to drink a completely different demon's blood of his own free will and develop a completely new power set and Dean doesn't think it's a good thing.
TL;DR Sam did not grow up being treated as the monstrous other by his dad and brother. He grew up as an understandably rebellious kid whose dad was a neglectful asshole and a drill sergeant, and he hated being dragged from place to place with no say. He felt different because he stood in contrast to a brother who tried his best to keep the peace because experience taught Dean that refusing to obey would get people killed (1.18), John would send Dean away if Dean gave him lip (14.12), and Dean felt he had to be there to take care of Sam and John (1.06).
More or less, these are the reasons I don't find the queer Sam metas I have stumbled across particularly compelling (along withāimoāJared's lack of romantic chemistry with other men). At the same time, people seeing Sam as queer or not queer doesn't bother me. I am not trying to "take away" that interpretation from anyone else (as if I even could). I'm just not interested.

*Taps in to the Mike*
Some of you have just grown to resent Mike Wheeler for falling into the trap of conformity lead by grief and fear because you saw him as Will's prize, as something he could just win.
Mike is still in love with Will, he is still the queercoded character you guys always refused to understand - truly, deeply understand.
He is love that couldn't be spoken out loud. He is the story he can never tell. He is the book that remains closed.
He is still the boy that never stopped looking, he is still the loyal friend who is willing to jump from a cliff for his friend, he is still the boy who lost everything. He is still in love with Will Byers.
He is still the boy who was too afraid. He never stopped being. What writers tell you IS NOT the truth. It is not a coincidence nor is it meaningless. It is the core existence of the show.
He is still a friend, and a son, and a boy who loves his best friend. And he does not deserve to suffer because he couldn't be brave.
And the truth is - some of you just took a disliking because you know who was based on, and you just can't stand that. It doesn't change the fact though.
Mike Wheeler Lawyer
The way bylers act towards Mike pisses me off so much. First of all, you canāt ship byler and (therefore) think Mike is queer without understanding what comes with itāhetcomp, pushing feelings down, being in love with your boy best friend in the 80s, while being closeted + having internalized homophobia and first thinking the reason said boy died was because he was gay and was hated crime. Imagine what That does to a person. Mike grew up in a republican, conservative white suburban all american family, and I think one of the main differences between him and Will is that Mike was way more passeable as straight than Will, which, yes, it is (also) a privilege, but at the same time I think it makes it harder for him to come to terms with his sexuality. On this note, I see a lot of people comparing the way Will handled his sexuality vs Mikeābecause Will was never an asshole to Mike and ādidnāt make it everyoneās problemā. But like. You guys cannot be serious, thereās NOT only one way to deal with your sexuality, especially when youāre a teenager and doesnāt really understand whatās going on with you. Additionally, their situation is different and theyāre different people who are going to deal with things in different ways (and sometimes it isnāt going to be clean and perfectāitās going to be messy and real); even if it wasnāt, itās harder for some people to accept that, especially when Mike had an āoutā through El, while Will always knew he didnāt like girls. I think the lashing out, the distancing himself and the awkward hug, everything, is what makes Mike such a good, complex and relatable character.
And to be honest, if you either are a Jane stan, or like mileven, or believe Mike is straight, I do think you 100% have the right to diss him and not like his character, because in canon thatās trueāhe was, over and over, in the wrong and didnāt really change, being constantly a really bad boyfriend to El and him being straight wouldnāt excuse his behavior as much as him being queer (and Iām not saying everything he does is excusable, but I think a lot of you just ignore all the context of what it would mean for his character to be gay and how he would react). But a Will fan, a byler fan? I really donāt get it. Especially when Mike apologizes again and again to Will, takes accountability and Will actually forgives him!! And since you believe (as do I) heās a queer character, with insane queercoding, I donāt understand how so many of you actually want him to suffer.
Isnāt it worse the fact that he probably acts like this because our society is extremely homophobic and prejudiced, especially in the 80s, than just him being an asshole Because? I see a lot of queer films where thereās always one character that hurts the other more, and even though itās frustrating, and you just want them to be happy and sometimes you canāt really defend them because indeed they were an asshole, I just become really sad because this whole story in itself is just a tragedy: they are not doing this because theyāre bad people, they are doing this because they are taught to live in shame with who they are, and the ones they end up hurting the most are themselves. And Iām sure a lot of you can empathize and see where Iām getting here, but I so often see this happening with Mike, from a byler pov.
Like, is he living in the closet with internalized homophobia not suffer enough? I donāt get it. And I also donāt like the constant jokes about the epilogue. It it not just⦠really sad how, after everything, he became a conformed version of himself?? Plus. Heās also 18 years old, I had to go through a pandemic to figure my sexuality out, I think heās going to be Okay. The constant jokes of him committing can be so tiring sometimes as well, when heās canonically suicidal and probably depressed.
A lot of people want to analyze stranger things from a byler leans, while also ignoring the context of Mikeās character with the ā80s homophobic society queer-internalized homophobiaā lens, which you would think was a prerequisite to actually ship byler, but they donāt actually give him the grace of looking further from the canon, especially since, unlike Will, Mike doesnāt have a queer arc. Mikeās sexuality is much more complex, in the sense that they never tell the audience; itās a quiet, subtle, yet considerably deliberate choice, where a lot of queer people can see themselves in him and his arch: itās something in between the lines, throughout clothing, music, storytelling, and nuances.
Plus, I see a lot of people complaining about Mike with the excuse he became a ānothing characterā, and although that is 100% true, I do think his writing was butchered in the last season, I also donāt think itās a good excuse to actually hate him. Since heās my favorite character, I constantly mourn the potencial he couldāve have and how he was sidelined, however, I could apply the same logic to almost every other character: Jonathan, Joyce, Hopper, Jane⦠And all I see from the fans of these other characters is just a genuine disappointment, like what I think of Mike, not them actually turing against the character? I would like to appoint this happening specifically with Jonathan, his arch stopped after the first seasons and then he only got himself as an extension of Nancy and a weird love triangle, and he had some wrongdoingsāthe exact same as Mike. I never see anyone from the niche fandom dissing him, ever. So⦠anywaysā¦
Another thing that does piss me of a lot is people saying that Will would make Mike his ālittle side hoeā⦠Like, so now not only are you hating Mike you also donāt know Will at all, do youā¦? Thatās his best friend, the person whom he was in love for years, the one that got him out of his trances over and over, that never gave up hope of finding him, that recognized him for his breathing⦠and you really think if, the moment Mike actually confessed, Will would just be using him? Okay⦠and I think itās okay to want Mike to actually put the work for Will: do a big love confession, make him spiral a little or something and go crazy, but my irl friend that is a Will stan said she wanted him to suffer a lot, and I was āwhat?? Ok, he can suffer, but A Lot?ā Like, guys, he already suffered, stop, pleaseā¦
And people complain about him being oblivious or whatever when heās literally autistic? Whatever, man. And even though I do think heās a way more compelling character when heās queer, some people tend to forget heās a teenage boy who went through the disappearance of his best friend, not being able to do anything about it, seeing the people he love disappearing and leaving him over and over again, seeing his girlfriend die, the amount of guilty over it all he carriesāhow he was supposed to be a leader and still couldnāt do anything to prevent all of this happening, again and again. The fact heās constantly in his head, dissociating and bottling all his feelings until he lashes out, he probably has PTSD and survival guilty. As I mentioned earlier, he is canonically suicidal and could be seen as a shell of himself because of depression, and so many other things that make him such an interesting and important character, that shouldāve been more than just a ship war and do not deserve all the hate heās getting just because of the Dufferās poor writing.
something that the spn writers seem to have forgotten in the course of the series is thatāYes even though dean is the more codependent one and couldnāt really live without samāsam is Also codependent of dean. like they both would do anything to save each other, and we have sam saying that in like the first seasons, after dean makes a deal in exchange of his soul for samās live. for me is really ooc that sam wouldnāt look for dean, sam saying he wouldnāt do the same for dean etc. i do think sam would be able to live without dean but even though he is more independent of his brother the point is that they are Both Codependent of each other like. cmon now. and it really annoys me how they just throw away this important part of their dynamic (from samās side) in the latest seasons

"mikes gonna hear good luck babe in 40 years and lose his mind" "mikes gonna hear conan gray in 40 years and go crazy" mike is gonna watch dead poets society like a week after will leaves hawkins and in a fit of insanity is going to fly to new york and show up at his door unannounced like the messy gay disaster that he is
#HotTake but i donāt think jonathan is mikephobic like At all. i mean, hopper definitely is and although he would be really happy for mike and will he also would be suuper pissed at mike for dating one of his kids again Lol. but lately iāve been seeing a lot of hcās of jonathan also being really annoyed with mike and annoyed that will likes mike. but honestly, although he clocked them in s4 and was ??, the only time mike was really an asshole that he saw was at the airport, and he and will quickly made amends so i donāt think jonathan would hold a grudge.
like jonathan knows this boy since he was a KID and he knows how much will cares for mike and how much mike Also cares for will. i think he wouldāve been protective of will and idk maybe he would have a talk with mike, but he would be sooo happy for both of them and every time i see people (either in fics or whatever) portaging a mean jonathan to mike i just⦠donāt buy at all.
