hometown is intentionally fashioned as a white monocultural upper middle class suburb, having a black, queer, poor, partially homeless girl show up suddenly makes everyone hate her and think she's a threat. she plays the role to make people leave her alone but all they do is talk behind her back. kris, susie, and ralsei allunderstand what its like to be outsiders and lonely due to circumstances they cant control.
but nooo you ignore all the nuance and focuse on the act she was playing up in ch1 rather than her authentic self
Not entirely related, but something a lot of people who do the "Susie is dangerous murderer bad person evil 😱" song & dance often tend to ignore, is that when susie gets even a modicum of positive -or even just not-negative attention- she almost immediately folds.
Good example would be her reaction to the "how to draw dragons" book cover, normally this is the sort of thing Susie would make fun of Kris for, but since about her she just excitedly asks to see the book again.
Even though it treats women like her as a dirty secret, attraction to whom must be hidden in drawers and awkwardly covered up, she's so unused to positive attention of any kind, let alone seeing someone like her depicted as desirable or attractive, that all her normal teasing is replaced by a grinning request to "see that again".
