Itās important that everyone understand that, when I say that I ālikeā a villainous character, what I in fact mean is that I consider them to be both cool and morally praiseworthy, as well as correct in their aims and methods and worthy of emulation by people in the real world. Just in case there was any ambiguity on this point.
I further elaborate that I consider them to be An Excellent Role-Model for Impressionable Children.
I almost neglected to mention that they are a worthy sexual partner and that I am aroused by everything that they do.
Ā When Jason Grace wakes up, he's surrounded by friends. He's holding hands with a beautiful girl who says that they're in love, and thereās a boy with a wild grin who says theyāre best friends. Jason doesnāt know whatās going on, but he knows he's surrounded by people who care for him and want to help him.
When Percy Jackson wakes up, he's almost completely alone. His only connection is a wolf that seems to be judging his every move as it decides his worth. He's fighting for his life and desperately searching to find a place that would take him in and accept him.
When Jason and Percy were switched, they didn't just have their physical selves swapped. They had their lives swapped. Jason got to believe that someone loved him, and Percy got to experience what it was like to have no one.
"they had their lives swapped" what if i kms? jason grace GET BEHIND ME!!!!!!
percy had an 'im a big three son' moment when he choked a goddess with her own saliva (controlling a fluid that was INSIDE her body) annabeth was terrified.
nico had an 'im a big three son' moment when he disembodied bryce lawrence (quite literally dissipating and shrinking his LIVING soul into a spirit) and threw him to the underworld, smashing his zombie warriors. reyna was terrified.
yet we were robbed of jason's 'im a big three son' moment where he sucks the air out of someone's lungs and makes them stop breathing, or damaging a person's nervous system with his lightning control, and literally cause internal bleeding, or a damaged/fried skull if he electrocuted hard enough (look up the effects of lightning damage on body y'all will get a whole list, tbh he doesn't even need lightning to do any of this, air control is more than enough since air takes charge of everything going inside the body, but this is just an added effect.) he could give people STROKES if he wanted to. he's the literal definition of burnt out kid who was suppressed from discovering the magnitude of his abilities, because one, his dad's ego wouldn't be able to handle it, two, because he, for some reason, can't be allowed to do anything other than get knocked out :/
also adding on, hardcore pjo fans know that after the ending page of boo, there's this fan story that rick chose to publish in the last few pages of the book where a fan reimagines the ending of hoo, in that work, annabeth collapses from an attack and percy sobs clutching her body. jason calmly asks him to step aside, and kneels before annabeth, jason regulates her breathing using his wind powers and brings annabeth back fully from her slight cardiac arrest, causing percy to be relieved. (If anyone has the hard copy of blood of olympus pls do reblog this post with a picture of that page, its just a few pages after the ending, alot of ppl are asking for it in the notes, but I'm a library girly so I don't have it, you can't really find it online either) considering rick approved and even liked the fan's work well enough to publish it in the official boo book, I'd say rick was aware and never completely ruled out expanding jason's abilities and had them in mind, he simply didn't incorporate it into the books. (also W fan for giving jason the rep he deserves, I will always remember you, the story was very well written, with great dialogue)
hi op :D i believe youre talking about this page!!
full ending utc(sorry for the poor quality, my phone doesn't have the best camera)!!
Wonderful little rewrite! As an isolated piece of fan writing it works very well. Iāll maintain preference for the original ending but itās great that Rick added it to his book to show appreciation!
jason using his OP powers to save annabeth⦠zeus telling jason heās proud of himā¦Ā thatās canon to ME once again we have the fans to thank for writing jason respectfully, jason grace iām sorry your author didnāt give you the character development or time to shine you always deserved!
āyouāre on your own kid, you always have beenā and itās jason grace, abandoned at the age of two, raised with wolves where he was never allowed to show any weakness, immediately after thrown into an environment where he was always expected to lead, always the mediator, yet always apart from the others, always separate. jason grace, always looking a little bit sad, his mortal parent a neglectful alcoholic who left him, his godly father uncaring and unresponsive, yet himself going above and beyond for his friends so nobody would ever feel abandoned and left the way he was. jason grace, who could have become cold and hateful but turned into the opposite force for his friends, always supportive, making them feel worth something, protecting others at the expense of himself. jason grace, who tried so hard to fight his destiny as the son of jupiter, who had so much humanity and all these visionary ideas and dreams, who taught a god what it meant to be human. jason grace, the most tragic and misunderstood of the seven, who always deserved better.

House of Hades has everyoneās (the non-percabeth five) greatest feats. (Or at least some ridiculously impressive feats)
Piper. Successfully charm speaks a goddess along with her brothers, (somehow) disengages a bomb, and brings Festus to life.
Jason. Pulls the ship by harnessing really really angry venti. Violent wind spirits of sand and fire. Very difficult thing.
Frank. (Fights Triptolemus after slaying all the cow things. Choke slams him) Controlled the dead army and rose to the rank of praetor. Without shapeshifting. With an arrow stuck in his bicep.
Hazel. Beat Pacifae by controlling the mist. Not to mention she was dragging Leo through that death maze. Then fought Clytius and broke the chains on the Doors of Death.
Leo. Launches a screwdriver at the button on the elevator. An Impossible shot. Saves Percy and Annabeth in doing so.
But no one talks about it because everybody wants to talk about PERCY. I hate the structure Rick used for this book. It blatantly favors Percabeth at the expense of the rest of the cast.
Not to mention Nico and Reyna.
Nico. Raises the dead in the house of Hades. Then, along with Hazel, shadow travels everybody out of the House of Hades right before it collapses. Then he volunteers for an even greater feat.
Reyna. Crossed the Atlantic on her own, fighting off gryphons. Then had to kill her own pegasus, who was already dying, but still, that was her best friend.
No one talks about this shit because theyāre too busy over-hyping Percyās blood bending shit.
God you fucking get it. Like I love Percy and Annabeth too but there were all these other incredible demigods in those books and itās like their feats just. donāt matter in comparison?
The other five, and Nico and Reyna whose efforts are always overlooked and forgotten, god it riles me up.
hey sorry if you've already answered a question similar to this but, just out of curiosity, why do u like jason so much as a character? (( sorry if this isnt the case oops ))
I do love Jason, and itās sort of hard to pin down why, but a lot of it has to do with how I can identify with his struggles (as someone who grew up in a strict household, as someone who felt torn between what I want to do and what Iām expected to do, as someone whoās fairly attuned to the people around me and who wants to be useful to them). I love Jason because heās an optimist who never lets his own problems affect the people around him (which definitely makes him one of the more mature members of the Argo II). He grew up without true parental figures and felt abandoned and alone for most of his life, and instead of being bitter about it, he tries his best to make sure no one else feels the same, hence his compassion towards Nico. All those scenes with Zeus/Jupiter (whether heās talking to his fatherās statue or otherwise) are totally heartbreaking for me because he wants that acknowledgment so bad, and not in the traditional sense? He doesnāt want praise, he doesnāt want his father to do anything to help him, he just wants to get to know his father a little, spend some time with him, and heās just such a good kid about it (Percy would go off on Poseidon about never being there for himĀ - Jason is just sad and understanding of the obligations his father is under). The thing Jason has never had growing up is family,Ā so it makes sense how much he wants to protect the little family heās built for himself. Finally,Ā I love that heās a little rebel within the confines of the rules set by the Roman camp. He rose up to become praetor, but he did it after joining the Fifth Cohort, which had the worst rep in camp. I see that as a bit of a fuck-you to all the rules and judgment and Octavian-style politics in CJ - Jason is the type of guy who refuses to judge people on their credentials or legacies, who focuses only on their actions, so he wanted to prove that even a team of misfits could rise to the top. Thereās probably more I could say about this kid, but thatās what I have for now :) Ā Ā Ā Ā
i love you for writing this. even if this was ten years ago itās still true and relevant, people STILL constantly mischaracterise and gloss over jasonās character. jason deserved better from everyone! from the narrative and the fandom! i will always defend and root for him
oh jason grace they could never make me hate you
#ābut he's so bori-ā blocked
you get me. i am so sick of this stupid common take āhe's blandā from the same people who skip his povs, no fucking shit you don't know anything about him oh my god
did the fandom collectively forget how much jason's death impacted the seven? Percy can't talk about him without getting choked up. Annabeth literally "cried herself sick" when she heard this news Hazel went and hugged his coffin when it was brought back to New Rome Frank said "For Jason" before sacrificing his life and facing his biggest fear Piper and Leo were done dirty. Their grief deserved to be shown more but it wasn't. I just wanted to talk about what we already had.
The Hazel and Frank ones šššš what do u mean she hugged his coffin Iām actually going to start crying
Piperās grief in the moment I think was shown quite well, but yeah I agree completely. Those three were BEST friends, I mean it was life-altering for them and they deserved better. (On that note if anyone knows any fanfics that explores Piper/Leoās grief for Jason better please let me know!!!)
jason is one of those people that everyone would be intimidated to talk to and be like āhe has plenty of friends he wouldnāt want to get to know me iām boringā but in reality heās like. actually one of the loneliest people ever

letās not forget jason grace got pretty much called perfect by aphrodite
Now I'm sad about Jason again ššš
He deserved better, I just can't forgive Rick for his dead. I don't care the "Jason died a greek death and Percy lives a roman life" o whatever said the person I read it from. He was such a good character that NOBODY cared narrating his story to us.
I feel robbed every time I remember about the little pieces of his background we had, like, wdym he came from the very bottom and fought his way to become a pretor and bring honor to his cohort but all we know about him is that Hera took his memories away (he never fully recover them), was unconscious a lot, and all his downfall with never belonging or having a proper life till the day he died?
this reblog⦠YOU GET ME. i'm also sick of the "jason died like a greek, percy lives like a roman / jason has to die so percy has to live" posts like you know what, i don't care. jason wasn't expendable. jason didn't "have to die". he deserved a life just as much as percy. he had all these plans for his future, he fought like crazy his whole life too, he deserved. better. rick just killed him for shock value and to "raise the stakes" way, way too late.
this fandom is so comfortable with disrespecting jason and acting like his life never mattered and i'm sick of it, really. rick did him so dirty too. jason deserved better.
rereading the lost hero and iām so struck by how much of jasonās pov is about how his brave persona is a complete act and how inside he really feels scared and lost all the time. in his head heās so full of self-doubt and fear, about not knowing what to do or where to even start. but jason always just shoves this down and puts on a brave face because heās supposed to be a leader. this being a recurring theme of his life, too: jason having to stomp down on any weaknesses from the age of two because lupa, the closest thing he had left to a family, would tear him to shreds if he didnāt.
all of this only to be mischaracterised for years. like the whole point of jasonās image as this āperfect heroā is that itās a facade. only a mask, not the real person underneath, who was constantly afraid, constantly wondering. who wondered if anyone actually cared about him, if anyone was out there looking for him like they were all looking for percy. who was devastated to find out that his mortal parent was unstable, neglectful and descended into madness. his only shred left of a family, and that was what he got. thalia telling jason about their mother and leo for once not being jealous of him, because even though his own mother was gone, at least she had been loving, at least there had been good memories. but jason didnāt have any. even if he did remember, those memories werenāt good ones.
for all his bravery, jason never had anything to fall back on. all his life heād found that courage from inside himself, somehow, some way, because he had no other option. leoās āyouāre not aloneāĀ because in that moment he realised just how little jason really had.
itās just so startling to me, how imperfect and human jason is, compared to this warped idea of him in fanon. heās constantly doubting himself and afraid, he just puts on a brave face because he has to. āeveryone seemed to think he was so brave and confident, but they didnāt see how lost he really felt.ā
Unpopular opinion, but what if we actually let Jason Grace be his own character and not some copy of Percy or a guy version of Annabeth?
that one tag that says jason is either hated or mischaracterised - exactly. and when heās not seen as a percy copy, heās seen as percyās complete opposite where percy keeps the good traits and jason can only have the bad. it pisses me OFF so bad

The argument that Fire & Blood is a history book that's completely unreliable kinda falls apart when you remember it's a fictional book meant to tell a fictional story, and stories have a theme. They have a why. And if you think the moral of the story is "if only they had let that one woman be the exception" or even "if westeros would also accept women as rulers by right be it of conquest or divine" then you're not engaging with the very prevalent anti monarchy sentiment of GRRM's work, and though that's not a crime, taking the author to the back and shooting him dead is still not a faithful way of adapting and consuming his intellectual property. At one point you have to consider authorial intent. It's why the characters you're entertained by exist after all.
