chestnut   eyes   shine   bright   and   smile   is   brighter.     fire   light   flickers   on   caramel   skin   and   she’s   not   sure   the   warmth   in   her   cheeks   comes   from   the   bonfire   or   the   drink   in   hand.     she   waves   her   hand   in   modest   dismissal ,    curls   bouncing   as   she   shakes   her   head   softly.      ❝   never   that ,    erica ,    ❞     light   chuckle   leaves   lips ,    all   this   alcohol   is   just   making   the   girl   smile   a   bit   more ,    ❝   but   there’s   an   open   fire ,    kids   ...     i   think   i   saw   the   sheriff   around   here   somewhere.    ❞

                         smart   girl :   never   off   guard     ...     until   now.     familiar   presence   behind   her   manages   to   throw   her   off   as    breath   hitches   in   response   to   well - known   voice.     she   turns   to   face   him   and   though   mind   begs   her   not   to ,    cinnamon   hues   can’t   resist   looking   him   up   and   down            take   in   every  missed   inch ,     falter   on   broad   shoulders   &   sharp   jawline   before   meeting   pleased   grin.     ❝   hercules.   ❞     his   name   to   so   many   is   just   a   story   of   brash   overconfidence ,   always   a   touch   too      reckless.     but   coming   from   her   mouth ,    almost   like   a   cautioner’s   tale.     it   seems   to   sound   more    like   another   word   for   stay   away.      ❝   i   wonder   why   that   is ,   ❞     sugar   sweet   smile   rests   on   lips    though   eyes   already   convey   answer :     it’s   no   accident. 

                        confusion ,    upside down ,    stuck.     veronica   lodge   was   not   made   for   worlds   like   this          not   crafted   to   be   part   of   the   fairy   tales   ravished   by   monsters.     so   solace   is   found   in   recognizing   friendly   faces   and   this   is   no   exception.     legs   take   her   to   old   family   friend ,    cinnamon   hues   large   and   questioning   as   if   he   would   know   what   is   going   on.      ❝   are   you   alright ?   ❞

                    scrutinizing   gaze   over   dark   ocean             the   only   familiar   thing   in   strange   world.     a   peculiar   comfort   in   familiar   push   and   pull.     in   a   dimension   with   creatures   that   lurk   in   the   shadows ,    there’s   no   such   thing   as   being   too   safe.     so   when   there’s   a   shift   in   energy ,    she   whips   around ,    heart   beating   fast   as   eyes   try   and   discern   whether   the   dark   figure   is   a   friend   or   enemy.     she   doesn’t   even   register   the   stream   of   water   that   darts   behind   head   of   curls.      ❝   what’s   there ?   ❞

                      ❝   i   take   it   back.     I’LL   ask   her   what   she   did   that   i   got   stuck   with   you ,   ❞     chestnut   hues   threaten   him   before   melting   back   into   affectionate   gaze.     there’s   always   been   something   striking   about   stefan   that   lydia’s   never   been   able   to   articulate.     the   closest   she’s   ever   come   to   an   explanation   is   her   favorite   picture   of   him           a   candid ,    backlit   by   a   sunset   soaked   car   window ,    he’s   driving   her   home   while   making   fun   of   her   playlist ,    dimpled   smile   visible   and   laughing   a   laugh   you   can   even   hear   in   the   stillness.     that’s   nothing ,    though ,    compared   to   the   real   thing.     his   presence   is   exhilarating   and   calming   all   at   once.     a   playful   shrug   shakes   curls ,      ❝   ya   know ,    stef ,    i   just   don’t   have   the   heart   to   tell   you   to   leave   me   alone ,   so   i   live   with   you   and   your   weird   voice.   ❞     lips   curve   into   coy   grin.     you’d   think   a   girl   like   lydia   would   be   all   over   this                showering   him   with   compliments   so   things   would   speed   up ,    but   with   stefan   she   enjoys   taking   her   time.      ❝   the   world ?       sure ,    but   i   don’t   wanna   give   “  the   world  ”   satisfaction   of   knowing   what   i   think.   ❞ 

                            the   caroline   forbes   she   knows   &   adores !      lively   response   from   blonde   elicits   interested   smile.      maybe   annual   bonfire   won’t   be   too   much   of   a   bore   now   that   she’s   got   caroline   by   her   side.     young   girl   happily   obliges   and   says   a   quick   cheers   before   taking   a   sip      with   her ,    features   twisting   along   with   caroline’s   in   response   to   the   burn   at   the   back   of   her   throat.      ❝   it   might   be   that ,    but   also ,    karma’s   been   giving   out   cheap   stuff   all   night ,  ❞      a   sigh   leaves   lips.     but   she’s   twenty   and   alcohol   is   alcohol ,    so   she   takes   another   mouthful   before   cinnamon   hues    refocus   on   the   blonde.        ❝   the   night’s   been   fine   ...      a   little   slow ,       but   it’s   not   like   i   had   high   hopes.   ❞

                    red   lightning  in  the  distance  dances  in  chocolate  eyes  as  ash  perpetually  falling  from  the  sky  decorates  curls.    overnight ,    the  world  around  her  changed.    and  while  false  memories  were  something  she  was  trying  to  get  over ,   this  was  something  completely  different.    the  sweet  and  charming  aurora  was      gone ,    replaced  by  an  upside  down  city  covered  with  ivy  and  plagued  with  monsters.     

                      gentle   smile   blooms   on   glossy   lips   as   chestnut   hues   land   on   familiar   face.     she   forges   a   path   towards   erica ,    cutting   through   the   crowd   easily ,    before   taking   a   seat   on   the   log   next   to   the   woman.     ❝   don’t   do   it ,   ❞     she   teases   before   taking   a   sip   of   her   drink ,     ❝   you   have   that   look   in   your   eye   when   you’re   thinking   about   doing   something   crazy.   ❞ 

                     ❝   ok ,    everything   you   just   said   sounds   perfect ,   ❞     she   starts ,   corners   of   lips   are   already   pulling   into  a   devilish   grin ,     ❝   but   what   if  ...   we   modified   it   just   a   bit ?   ❞      lydia   isn’t   a   stranger   to   proposing   ideas   that   are   admittedly   out   of   the   other’s   comfort   zone ,    and   tonight   is   no   exception ,     ❝   we   drink   whatever   karma’s   giving   out ,    we   can   make   s’mores ,    but   then   we   dance   by   the   bonfire   while   simultaneously   drunk   and   hyper   from   all   the   sugar   we’ve   consumed.   ❞     suggestive   smile   pairs   so   easily   with   pleading   eyes.

                    there’s   an   odd   feeling   of   kinship   that   veronica   can’t   help   but   feel   when   she   sees   caroline.     though   a   couple   years   older   than   her ,    ravenette   recognizes   struggle   to   separate   past   and   present   in   the   eyes   of   others.     so   when   eyes   meet   and   smiles   are   exchanged ,    veronica   takes   it   a   step   further   as   she   walks   through   the   crowd.     ❝   caroline !     it’s   been   a   minute ,   ❞     the   curve   of   a   crescent   moon   on   lips   as   she   offers   the   blonde   the   extra   drink   she’s   holding ,    ❝   drink   with   me ?   ❞

                   fingers   flex   around   guitar’s   neck   as   she   sits   backstage.     takes   her   a   moment   to   process   her   performance.     she’s   never   sang   in   front   of   such   a   large   audience ,     and   now   that   she   has ,     it   all   feels   like   a   blur   in   her   memory.     only   remnant   is   a   quick   but   steady   heart   beat.     chocolate   hues   look   to   the   closest   person ,     needs   assurance   that   she   didn’t   choke   while   she   was   up   there.     ❝   hey ,    did   you   hear   my   performance ?      how   did   i   sound ?    ❞

                         in   recent   weeks ,    lydia’s   ears   have   been   unusually   sensitive.     the   noise   of   the   town   wide   event   has   lead     party   girl   lydia   martin     to   watch   instead.     she   can   hear   it   all :    waves   crashing   on   the   shore  /    everyone   dancing   barefoot   on   the   beach   as   the   bonfire   flickers   beside   them   /    excited   shouts   as   friends   splash  each   other   with   water.     but   voice   beside   her   drowns   out   cacophony   of   noise.     flashes   a   charmed ,    affectionate   smile   in   his   direction ,    ❝   how   in   the   world   was   i   lucky   enough   to   cross   paths   with   you ?   ❞     it’s   nice   to   have   another   person   by   her   side ,     just   one   of   the   reasons   she   adores   stefan :    he   always   finds   her   when   she   needs   him   the   most.     ❝   it   has   hasn’t   it ?    if   you   want ,    i   could   tease   you   about   your   stupid   jokes   and   brooding   nature   and   really   take   you   back.   ❞

                     it   is   hard   to   shock   veronica   lodge.      that   being   said ,    sandra   has   managed   to   pull   said   emotion   out   of   the   heiress.     lips   slightly   parted ,    with   corners   turned   upwards   in   pleasant   surprise.     even   aurora’s   own   district   attorney   was   young   once.       ❝   who   would’ve   known   aurora’s   very   own   knew   how   to   cut   loose ,   ❞     veronica   tips   her   head ,    gives   the   woman   props   for   bold   confession   and   actions.     a   moment   of   deliberation.     woman’s   words   echo   in   head :    it’s   only   illegal   if   you’re   caught.     velvet   voice   finally   answers   original   question ,    ❝   who   am   i   to   deny   you ?   ❞     there’s   a   hint   of   a   shimmer   in   dark   eyes   as   mouth   purses   slightly ,     ❝   certainly   would   would   make   for   a   more   exciting   night.   ❞
