It’s been a while but I finally did the rarest birds I’ve seen on campus so far No.1: ruby-crowned kinglet. The first time I’ve seen one was in the rain, I didn’t have my binoculars but I recognize the red Mohawk. It’s actually a widespread common bird, but they are hard to find in summer since they nest high in trees. In winter migrations they comes down to the bushes and are easier to see, I saw a second one just recently.

There are some beautiful western bluebirds around my campus and I’m always so stoked to see them.

Bird watcher #eevee , today eevee discovered some lesser goldfinch just like I did sometime a week ago. They are really really tiny. I need to draw more “humans”, here’s kakashi

Third in this series is this skewer soup thing called “oden” in Japanese. Originated in japan, oden is a pot dish with eggs, tofu, fish cakes, meatballs, seaweed cooked in radish broth. Unlike hot pot, oden ingredients are ones that can withstand long time of cooking because these skewers are often sold submerged in radish broth. I often find them in Japanese convenience stores where they all have an oden section. You picked the skewers and they put them in a paper cup with some warm broth. I remember vividly enjoying these after middle school with friends, especially after a long dreadful winter day. These are the ultimate snack in my opinion because they are bite sized, varied, savory, shareable and come with its own drink! Second in the series is this pork chop stew that hits close to home. Pork chop, home dried salt cured meat, lotus root, soy beans and bamboo sprouts, slowly cooked in a gigantic clay pot for hours. I’ve never heard of this stew being spoken outside of the Shanghainese dialect. There’s no point craving for this stew or look up which restaurant serves it because every Shanghainese knows the best pork stew can only be found in moms home kitchen. Tons of umami and zero drop of greens, pour that greasy smoky broth on some rice and no fucking period drama can pull our family off our seat. I’m gonna do a miniseries of food I miss from New York City or just generally, starting off with this Gyorou Ramen from Ramen Setagaya in east village. Strong garlic favor with amazing fish broth soup base, satisfyingly fatty pork👌, I can’t. The only place you can get it in the states. I would easily walk 30 minutes to get take out of this with extra noodles and that would make all my problems go away immediately.
