With my dissociation, it’s not as simple as just ‘forgetting’ where I am.
For me, I’ve only ever had one episode in which I have genuinely forgotten where I am and did the whole looking around, ‘where tf am I’ kind of thing.
But normally, I don’t ‘forget’ where I am. Dissociation has opened in my head a separate dimension and plane of existence in which I go when I dissociate, so I see the physical, material world as its own reality, and then there’s the void where my brain deposits me when I dissociate.
It’s less ‘forgetting’ and more that I’m not present enough to register my surroundings and fully live in and experience the material reality in a given moment. I’ve had foggy thoughts of ‘I’m not quite sure where I am’ while/coming out of dissociation, but there are also additional layers of my memories and sense of time being skewed, and things that I’ve done that day or material things I’m presently engaging with get foggy and get mixed with the void in which I’m not 100% sure if it’s real or not.
I don’t mean to make it all supernatural-sounding, but that’s how I organize my experiences in my head. I go somewhere else when I dissociate, and I’ve lived there long enough to know how I would describe it.

The 13th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 13th August 2026.
It’s short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.
After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.
