BIG CITY was a CIA experiment in which the tailpipe of a 1953 Mercury was extended eighteen inches over its normal length. It was then driven for a total distance of eighty miles around New York City, emitting a gas of LSD in order to study its effect on citizens who came in direct contact with the gas. BIG CITY was carried out once a week for over a year. In another operation, operatives would travel on New York City subways with battery-operated emission apparatus in briefcases to see if the LSD could be secretly administered to individuals in a confined space and what its effect would be. The agents themselves wore nasal filter cartridges inserted high into their sinus cavities.
