Does a heart motivated by passions and the desire to help others make it weak? Is it wrong and evil to be weak? friendly reminder, the way Sauron deceived Boromir was not by promising him wealth, nor power, nor his own safety- he thought he would be strong enough to defend a whole city and defeat Sauron. Boromir had a heart that was neither weak nor strong, but both at the same time- his heart was full.

We never get to see Utterson’s reaction after reading the letters from Lanyon and Jekyll. The reason for that is that the story isn’t about him; he was the POV character in a mystery surrounding two other guys (apparently). If any reaction to the giant revelation was important, it would’ve been the readers’. But we all came to love Utterson anyway, along with his history with Jekyll & Lanyon, and all the what-ifs and might-bes we can think of. And I have to wonder what his thoughts were after reading those letters. Both of his oldest friends were suddenly dead, and one of them (at least) had a whole depth to him that Gabriel never knew about. That’s a lot to take in all at once.

That, and, as @spider-xan mentioned once, Utterson would realize belatedly that he was there and actually witnessed his best friend’s death throes.

How does one deal with all that? How much does personal principle of actions interfere with all that? Or does it? How did learning all of this change Gabriel’s life? Did it change his life?

Spider-xan has touched on this theme a lot, and the possibilities are heartbreaking, every single one.
