Sometimes crossovers can get a little wild in my head. Time to give Grace some new trauma. 🤪
Grace loved science, biology most of all. There was something magical about how living things function. How they can be made so precisely but live so freely. Biology is cool.
His parents don’t share his enthusiasm about science, but they still let him go to school and participate in science clubs so Grace doesn’t mind.
They prefer magic and don’t force him to like it. They do make sure he knows the basics.
Grace’s drawings are stable. Grace himself is clumsy. His 10th birthday his father gifts him a a pen with its ink stored inside so he no longer spills. Grace loves it as much as his science.
that year he starts using magic to help with his experiments. Does he need to boil this solution? Change the pressure on these rocks? Create a closed space where the perfect gas conditions can exist?
His parent’s caps held a wide brim perfect for hanging Grace’s little gemstones. He loved those cause then he had a way to do nothing science and magic. A connection between his passion and family.
Magic becomes a helpful lab tool for Grace. One that he can change as he needs to.
Grace is 15 when the though crises his mind after seeing the group of kids having to share the few Bunsen burners available. Magic could help them. He tells his parents. They smile and praise him for his thoughtfulness.
he doesn’t know why a week later, everybody looks at him like he’s crazy when he asks where the new spell cast equipment has gone.
he never noticed the bright red hat pointed cap walking by.
Grace is 16 and submitted an application to university at his teacher’s recommendation. He tells his parents and they’re happy. He will teach so many people they say. Like him, they will be able to grasp their dreams.
that chance comes a month after his graduation. A red pointed cap which breaks into their home. Grace casts a small spell just meant to keep the witch stuck in place. He does not realize that the ink is wrong.
the witch is encased into stone. No, he is stone Grace realizes.
he sobs into his parent’s shoulders while they pat his back. They hold his trembling hands as they ask him to remember his spell. They ask him to reverse it.
Grace tries and tries. It takes weeks, Grace does not realize they never try to fix the witch themselves.
he best works returns the form back, but the mind is gone. Broken by the time spent encased in their prison.
his parents celebrate. Grace does not know how they could celebrate at this time.
They drag him to the garden. To what they call the silver wood tree.
the next days, they teach him about harvesting it’s ink. Grace feels numb, he cannot muster up the will to admire this strange species of tree.
They smile at him. A new glint in their eyes. Grace is ready they whisper and then they are gone.
silverwood is parasitic is one of the last things they tell him. It is their lifeblood, now they will be it’s. Grace throws up. The newly blossomed silver wood trees make him sick.
Grace’s parents are gone. They’re never coming back.
Magic. He can’t look at it anymore. Not without seeing their bodies being warped by the silver wood tree.
why did they leave him? Was magic truly enough to die for? Grace reminds himself about the Bunsen burners. Grace knows he’s being selfish.
Grace makes his decision, the lines he practically carves into the paper are straighter than he is used to. He determines he’s a coward. He completes the circle and the sigil reaches out to him, he reaches back.
It’s August and Ryland Grace’s first year of University. He does not believe in magic.
