The Great Hall was loud in the way only breakfast at Hogwarts could beβhundreds of voices tangled together, chairs scraping stone, cutlery clinking against plates, and the restless flutter of owls diving through the enchanted ceiling like feathery meteors.
At the Gryffindor table, chaos had already begun.
James Potter was trying to butter toast while reading a Quidditch column over Sirius Blackβs shoulder. Sirius, in turn, was stretched across the bench like a bored cat, flicking crumbs at Peter Pettigrew, who squeaked every time one hit him. Remus Lupin, composed as ever, had a book open beside his porridge, though he had not turned a page in several minutes.
Lily Evans was arguing with Marlene McKinnon about something involving Arithmancy homework, Mary Macdonald was trying to keep Fabian and Gideon Prewett from charming their pumpkin juice into exploding, and Alice Fortescue was carefully untying the ribbon from a package her mother had sent.
Frank Longbottom was the first to notice the owls arriving.
βPost,β he said, ducking as three tawny owls swooped down toward their section of the table.
Letters and parcels dropped in a flurry of parchment and feathers. One owl landed directly in front of Remus, dropping a folded newspaper onto his porridge before lifting off again.
Remus blinked down at the soggy front page.
ββ¦Oh.β
Lily glanced over. βWhat is it?β
Remus carefully lifted the newspaper free, shaking porridge from its edges. The masthead of the Daily Prophet gleamed in the morning light.
βFront page,β he murmured, eyes scanning quicklyβand then stopping.
His expression changed.
James noticed immediately. βMoony? Whatβs wrong?β
Remus didnβt answer. He turned the paper around and slid it across the table.
Sirius grabbed it first.
βOiββ James protested, but Sirius was already reading, his casual smirk fading line by line.
The headline screamed across the page:
PUREBLOOD LORD SENTENCED TO AZKABAN FOR LIFE β CHILD ABDUCTION RING EXPOSED
Below it was a photograph of a thin, sharp-faced wizard being dragged by Aurors. His hair was slicked back, his smile faint and disturbingly calm.
Siriusβs grey eyes darkened as he read the subheading.
Lily leaned over his shoulder, her lips parting in horror. βOh myββ
βWhat?β Marlene demanded. βLet me see.β
The paper was passed around, each Gryffindor growing quieter as they read.
The article described a sprawling estate, hidden chambers, wards designed to conceal movement. Dozens of missing magical children had been discovered thereβsome rescued, some not.
Peterβs hands trembled as he read. βHeβhe collected them?β
Fabian made a strangled noise. Gideon swore loudly.
Lower down, a smaller column printed a quote from the man himself, taken during interrogation.
They were all filthy. Imperfect. None of them were what I sought. I never achieved my goal. I never obtained my perfect boyβmy beautiful, graceful swan.
The silence at the Gryffindor table turned heavy.
Mary pressed a hand to her mouth. βThatβsβdisgusting.β
ββPerfect boy,ββ Marlene repeated, her voice sharp with anger. βHeβs talking about children like theyβreββ
James shoved his glasses up his nose, frowning. βWho even is this bloke?β
All eyes turned, almost in unison, to Sirius.
He blinked. βWhat?β
βYou grew up with purebloods,β Lily said. βYou might recognise him.β
Sirius scowled and grabbed the paper again, squinting at the moving photograph. The man was older now, gaunter, but something about the shape of his nose, the tilt of his smileβ¦
ββ¦I think,β Sirius said slowly, βI might have seen him at some events when I was little. Dinners. Balls. That sort of rot.β He shook his head. βI donβt remember his name.β
Remus leaned forward. βIs he one of the old families?β
Siriusβs gaze drifted across the Hallβand then sharpened.
βOi,β he said suddenly, sitting up. βThereβs someone who would know.β
They followed his line of sight.
Regulus Black was walking past the Gryffindor table on his way to Slytherin, flanked by his usual groupβBarty Crouch Jr. talking animatedly at his side, Evan Rosier and Pandora Rosier walking behind them, and Dorcas Meadowes slightly to the left, her eyes scanning the room like she expected a duel at any moment.
Regulus himself looked immaculate as alwaysβdark hair perfectly in place, robes unwrinkled, expression faintly annoyed at the worldβs existence.
βReg!β Sirius called.
Regulus stopped mid-step, his shoulders tensing before he turned slowly.
βWhat,β he said flatly, already irritated.
βGet over here.β
Regulus glanced at his friends, who looked variously amused, suspicious, and bored. He groaned.
βIf this is another attempt at public humiliation, Iββ
βJust come here, you prat.β
Regulus rolled his eyes but changed direction, weaving between benches until he stood beside Sirius, arms crossed.
βWhat do you want?β
Sirius shoved the newspaper at him. βDo you know this bloke?β
Regulus took the paper with clear reluctance.
His gaze flicked downβand froze.
All irritation vanished from his face in an instant, replaced by something stark and shocked.
ββ¦Yes,β he said quietly.
The table erupted.
βYou do?β James leaned forward. βWho is he?β
Regulus swallowed, his fingers tightening on the parchment.
βLord Arcturus Vale,β he said. βOld family. Very rich. Veryβ¦ respected.β His voice wavered slightly. βI met him several times when I was younger.β
Sirius frowned. βYou did?β
Regulus nodded slowly, still staring at the photograph. βHe was alwaysβ¦ nice to me.β
That word hung in the air, wrong and unsettling.
βHe used to give me gifts,β Regulus continued, his voice distant. βLittle toys when I was small. Books when I got older. Heβdββ He stopped, his brow furrowing. βHeβd play chess with me at events. Talk to me while the adults were drinking.β
Pandora, standing just behind him now, went very still.
βHe always invited me to his house,β Regulus added. βSaid he had a wonderful library and a lake with swans. But Mother and Father never let me go.β
No one spoke.
Then Mary, still clutching the paper, said slowly, βRegulusβ¦ listen to what he said in this statement.β
She pointed to the quote.
Regulus read it.
His face drained of colour.
My perfect boyβmy beautiful, graceful swan.
For a long moment, he did not move.
Dorcas stepped forward. βReg?β
Regulus looked up, his eyes wide and unfocused.
ββ¦He used to call me that,β he whispered.
The Gryffindor table went dead silent.
βWhat?β Sirius breathed.
βWhen I was little,β Regulus said, his voice hollow. βHe said I looked like a swan. Tall and pale andββ His lip curled in disgust. βHeβd call me βmy little swanβ when he greeted me. I thought he was just beingβodd.β
Barty let out a strangled, furious laugh. βYouβre joking.β
βIβm not,β Regulus snapped, his composure cracking. βI never told anyone because it wasβ¦ embarrassing.β
James grabbed the paper and scanned the physical description in the article.
The suspect reportedly fixated on a particular child he encountered at several high-society gatherings: a slight, pale boy with dark hair, described by Vale as βgraceful as a swanβ and βperfectly bred.β
James looked up slowly.
ββ¦Reg.β
Realisation spread across the table like wildfire.
βOh my god,β Alice whispered.
βBloody hell,β Gideon breathed.
Pandoraβs hand flew to her mouth. Evanβs expression shifted from bored to murderous in the span of a heartbeat.
Regulus staggered back a step, the newspaper slipping from his fingers.
βNo,β he said faintly. βNo, thatβhe was always polite. Heβhe gave me sugared almonds once because I said I liked them. Heββ
βRegulus,β Dorcas said softly, but her voice shook.
βHe never did anything,β Regulus insisted, panic rising in his chest. βHe neverβhe never touched me. He justβhe talked. He smiled. He said I wasββ His face twisted. βMerlin.β
The Gryffindor table erupted.
βThat bastardββ Marlene slammed her fist onto the wood.
βIβll kill him myself,β Fabian snarled.
βHe kidnapped children,β Mary cried. βHe was collecting them!β
Peter was nearly hyperventilating. βAnd he wantedβhe wanted Regββ
Sirius surged to his feet, knocking his goblet over. Pumpkin juice spilled across the table, unnoticed.
βThat sick, twistedββ
Regulus flinched at the volume, his hands shaking.
βHe used to smile at me,β he said in a broken whisper. βHe told my mother I was βexceptional.β I thoughtββ His voice cracked. βI thought he just liked children.β
Pandora stepped forward and grabbed his sleeve. βYou were a child, Reg.β
Evan looked ready to set something on fire.
Bartyβs face had gone frighteningly blank, his eyes fixed on the photograph of Vale as though memorising every detail.
Sirius rounded the table and grabbed Regulus by the shoulders.
βYou listen to me,β he said, his voice rough. βYou didnβt do anything wrong. You were a kid.β
Regulus stared at him, eyes glassy. βHe called me swan, Sirius.β
Siriusβs grip tightened. βYeah. And now heβs rotting in Azkaban.β
Around them, the rest of the Great Hall had begun to notice the shouting. Heads turned. Whispers spread.
At the Gryffindor table, however, no one cared about the attention.
They were too busy yelling, swearing, and collectively losing their minds over the revelation that a notorious child abductor had once smiled sweetly at Regulus Black and called him beautiful.
And Regulus stood in the middle of it all, pale and shaking, staring at the crumpled newspaper on the floor as though it had just rewritten his entire childhood.
Dinner had been going badly for nearly everyone except Albus Dumbledore.
This was not, technically, unusual.
The Great Hall had begun the evening as it always did: four long tables, golden plates, candles drifting like lazy stars overhead, the ceiling charmed into a dusky purple-blue, and several hundred students trying to eat before somebody spilled pumpkin juice, started a duel, or made the mistake of asking James Potter whether he could catch a grape in his mouth from across the Gryffindor table.
He could not.
He had claimed he could.
Sirius Black had thrown the grape anyway.
Peter Pettigrew had ducked as if it were a Bludger.
The grape had hit Remus Lupin directly on the forehead.
Remus, without looking up from his plate, said, βI hope you both suffer artistically.β
Twenty minutes later, Dumbledore stood up at the staff table, clapped his hands once, and announced, with the terrible bright cheer of a man who had decided peace was overrated, βTonight, I think, calls for a musical showcase.β
Silence fell.
Not the pleasant sort.
The sort where every student in the room began silently calculating whether they could fake illness fast enough to be excused.
McGonagall closed her eyes.
Flitwick looked delighted.
Slughorn froze with a fork halfway to his mouth.
Sirius, naturally, sat up like someone had just announced free entertainment and legalised heckling.
James leaned forward. βA what?β
βA musical showcase,β Dumbledore repeated, smiling serenely over his half-moon spectacles. βDuring dinner. For morale.β
Lily Evans muttered, βNothing says morale like public humiliation.β
Mary Macdonald brightened. βNo, actually, this could be brilliant.β
At the Slytherin table, Regulus Black stared down at his dinner as if pure refusal could make reality change shape.
Beside him, Barty Crouch Jr. looked far too pleased.
βOh, this has potential.β
βIt has a lawsuit,β Dorcas Meadowes said.
Pandora Rosier tilted her head, eyes gleaming. βA musical showcase is just a duel with better shoes.β
Evan Rosier leaned back, arms folded, gaze already drifting across the hall toward the Gryffindor table. βIf Black gets picked, I want front row seats.β
Regulus did not look up. βWhich Black?β
Evanβs mouth twitched. βEither.β
Regulus picked up his goblet. βI hope you choke.β
The first victim was a fifth-year Ravenclaw boy who had clearly never wronged anyone in his life but was magically hauled to the front of the hall anyway, where Dumbledore flicked his wand and dressed him in an apron, cap, and aggressively cheerful waistcoat.
The poor boy sang as if begging the music to end his suffering.
His feet moved in directions his body had not approved.
The hall dissolved almost immediately.
James was howling into Siriusβs shoulder.
Peter had both hands over his mouth, squeaking.
Remus, traitorously, was laughing with his eyes closed.
Lily tried to hide her smile behind her goblet and failed.
Mary was clapping along with absolutely no mercy.
Marlene shouted, βUse your knees, love!β
Alice made a distressed little sound. βDonβt bully him!β
Frank said, βHeβs doing his best.β
Fabian said, βThatβs the problem.β
Gideon nodded. βHis best is fighting him.β
The next number was worse.
Two Hufflepuffs who apparently hated each other were assigned βSixteen Going on Seventeenβ from The Sound of Music, except one of them refused to look at the other and the other kept accidentally stepping on her own skirt.
Dumbledore watched like a delighted theatre director at opening night.
McGonagall watched like a woman preparing a resignation letter in her mind.
Then came a group number from Chicago, with a handful of unfortunate students made to attempt βCell Block Tango.β One of them had no rhythm. One of them had too much rhythm. One of them took the spoken parts far too seriously and frightened a first-year.
By the time a lanky seventh-year boy was forced into βThe Phantom of the Operaβ and cracked so badly on the high notes that Peeves, drifting near the rafters, dropped a spoon in shock, the entire hall had become a roaring theatre.
Sirius was in heaven.
He was lounging sideways on the Gryffindor bench, one arm slung over Jamesβs shoulders, black hair falling around his laughing face. Every time Dumbledore reached for the next name, Sirius straightened as if hoping the lightning might strike.
James noticed. βYou want to be picked.β
βObviously,β Sirius said. βI was born for spectacle.β
βYou were born for detention,β Lily said.
βSame lighting,β Sirius replied.
Remus gave him a dry look. βYou do realise he might not give you something flattering.β
βI make everything flattering.β
Marlene snorted. βYou could be dressed as a teapot.β
Sirius placed a hand over his chest. βAnd I would be the sexiest teapot Britain has ever seen.β
Mary laughed into her napkin.
Alice leaned toward Frank and whispered, βHe would, unfortunately.β
Frank nodded, pained. βI know.β
At the Slytherin table, Barty was practically vibrating.
βPick Regulus,β he hissed under his breath. βPick Regulus. Pick Regulus. Pick Regulus.β
Regulus stabbed a potato. βStop chanting.β
Pandora smiled dreamily. βImagine him in Cats.β
Regulus went still.
Dorcas leaned in. βNo, imagine him in Wicked.β
βDonβt,β Regulus said.
Evanβs eyes sharpened. βCabaret.β
Regulus pointed his fork at him. βI will hex your bones into ribbons.β
βThatβs not a no.β
βIt was an execution notice.β
Dumbledore raised his hand again.
The hall hushed with eager brutality.
βNow,β he said, eyes twinkling, βI believe we require something with family spirit.β
Siriusβs head snapped up.
Regulusβs went down.
βSirius Black,β Dumbledore called.
The Gryffindor table exploded.
Sirius shot to his feet instantly, grinning like a man being crowned. He bowed to Gryffindor, bowed to Ravenclaw, bowed to Hufflepuff, then turned and bowed with theatrical arrogance toward the Slytherin table.
James punched the air. βGo on, Padfoot!β
Peter clapped so quickly his hands blurred.
Remus sighed, though he was smiling. βMerlin save us.β
Lily covered her face. βHeβs going to be unbearable.β
βHe already is,β Marlene said.
Mary whistled.
Alice laughed. βAt least heβs happy.β
Frank nodded toward Sirius, who was now blowing kisses. βToo happy.β
Fabian cupped his hands around his mouth. βFall over!β
Gideon shouted, βDramatically!β
Sirius spun toward them and gave another bow. βFor you, gentlemen, anything.β
Dumbledoreβs smile widened.
βAnd Regulus Black.β
Silence cut through the hall like a dropped knife.
At the Slytherin table, Regulus did not move.
Barty slowly turned to stare at him.
Evanβs grin bloomed, slow and catastrophic.
Pandora clapped once, delighted.
Dorcas whispered, βOh, heβs going to murder someone.β
Regulus stared at his plate. βNo.β
Sirius, still standing at the front, froze for one beat. Then his grin sharpened into pure sibling malice.
βOh, Reggie.β
Regulusβs eyes lifted. βDo not.β
The hall began laughing before anything had even happened.
James nearly fell off the bench. βOh, this is going to be good.β
Peter wheezed. βBoth of them?β
Remus had gone very still, eyes flicking between Sirius and Regulus with interest. βThat depends entirely on the song.β
βSomething sibling-ish,β Mary said, already laughing. βDoes Annie have anything?β
Marlene snapped her fingers. βNo, no. βAnything You Can Doβ from Annie Get Your Gun.β
Alice beamed. βThat would actually suit them.β
Frank nodded. βCompetitive.β
Fabian leaned over the table. βMaybe βAgonyβ from Into the Woods.β
Gideon pointed at Sirius. βSirius would commit to that.β
βHe commits to everything except homework,β Lily said.
At the Slytherin table, Barty was chanting again. βGo. Go. Go. Go.β
Regulus did not move. βNo.β
Evan slid one hand behind Regulusβs back and gave him a shove.
Regulus caught himself on the table and turned with murder in his face. βRosier.β
βI didnβt want you to miss your entrance.β
Pandora waved both hands at him. βBreak a leg.β
Dorcas added, βSomeone elseβs, ideally.β
Dumbledoreβs wand gave a gentle flick.
A shimmer of magic curled around Regulusβs bench and nudged him upward.
Regulus seized the edge of the table.
The hall lost it.
Sirius bent double laughing at the front. βHeβs resisting arrest.β
βShut up,β Regulus snapped.
Barty stood and tried to pry his fingers loose. βCome on, darling, the stage calls.β
βThe stage can hang itself.β
Evan came around the other side with a look of angelic helpfulness and lifted Regulus by the waist.
Regulus kicked once, not hard enough to actually hurt anyone, but enough to make his opinion known.
βIβll kill you.β
βAfter the number,β Evan said.
Pandora sighed happily. βHeβs so dramatic.β
Dorcas rested her chin on her hand. βThis is already better than dinner.β
By the time Regulus was dragged to the front, the entire school was laughing, cheering, banging cutlery against goblets and plates.
Sirius stepped close, eyes sparkling.
Regulus glared up at him. βWhatever youβre about to say, donβt.β
Sirius placed both hands over his heart. βIβm touched you wanted to share the spotlight with me.β
βI was kidnapped.β
βArt often begins that way.β
Regulusβs expression went flat. βI hate you.β
βFamily spirit,β Sirius said brightly.
Dumbledore looked between them, delighted. βExcellent. Excellent. Such chemistry already.β
Every table laughed.
Regulus went colder. βWhat.β
Sirius blinked. βPardon?β
Dumbledore lifted his wand. βTonight, Sirius Black and Regulus Black shall perform βYouβre the One That I Wantβ from Grease.β
The laughter stopped.
Then came a sound that was less a reaction and more a collective system failure.
James stood halfway out of his seat. βSorry, what?β
Peterβs mouth fell open.
Remus stared at Dumbledore as if trying to work out whether this was a prank, a curse, or a cry for help.
Lily said, very clearly, βProfessor.β
Mary made a strangled noise that might have been a laugh trying to escape through horror.
Marlene slapped both hands down on the table. βNo. No, thatβs insane.β
Aliceβs eyes went huge. βBut theyβre brothers.β
Frank nodded slowly, looking as if the room had tilted sideways. βThey are very much brothers.β
Fabian leaned back. βWell. Thatβs bold.β
Gideon, blinking, said, βBold is one word.β
At the Slytherin table, Bartyβs grin had collapsed into stunned disbelief.
Evan stared, then slowly, slowly turned toward Pandora.
Pandoraβs eyes were round and fascinated. βOh.β
Dorcas pinched the bridge of her nose. βThat man needs hobbies. Different hobbies.β
Regulusβs face had gone blank in a way that usually meant somebody was seconds away from losing a limb.
Sirius, for once in his life, seemed speechless.
He turned toward Dumbledore. βProfessor, just to check, you do know who we are?β
Dumbledore beamed. βOf course.β
Regulus said, βThen youβve suffered a head injury.β
A ripple of laughter went through the hall, nervous and delighted.
Dumbledore clasped his hands. βI have always believed performance requires courage.β
βYou have always believed many things,β Regulus said. βThat is not proof of quality.β
Sirius slowly raised a hand. βCan I request literally any other song? There are thousands. Some of them involve murder. We could do murder.β
βI second murder,β Regulus said.
James yelled, βLet them do murder!β
Marlene added, βMurder has rhythm!β
Dumbledore chuckled. βNo, no. I have selected this one particularly.β
Lily stared. βWhy?β
There was a dangerous pause.
Dumbledoreβs eyes twinkled.
βBecause,β he said lightly, βI rather ship them.β
The Great Hall erupted.
It was chaos.
Pure, immediate, plate-rattling chaos.
James made a sound like he had been punched in the soul. βYou what?β
Peter squealed and dropped his fork.
Remus closed his eyes and said, βIβm choosing to believe I hallucinated that.β
Lily stood up. βProfessor Dumbledore.β
Mary was laughing so hard she had tears in her eyes, though her expression remained horrified. βThat isβno, that isβoh my God.β
Marlene slapped Fabianβs arm repeatedly. βDid he just say that?β
Fabian wheezed. βHe did. He absolutely did.β
Gideon pointed vaguely at the staff table. βI feel like there should be a meeting.β
Alice had gone bright pink. βThatβs notβsurely thatβs not appropriate.β
Frank nodded, solemn and helpless. βI think we are far beyond appropriate.β
At the Slytherin table, Barty looked like Christmas had been cancelled and replaced with a court summons.
βAbsolutely not,β he shouted.
Evanβs jaw was tight, but his eyes were glittering with the particular fury of someone who hated being entertained by something. βDumbledore, you ancient menace.β
Pandora whispered, βConsidering the family history, it explains a lot.β
Dorcas choked. βPandora.β
βWhat? It does.β
Regulus turned very slowly toward Dumbledore.
Sirius also turned.
For once, their expressions matched perfectly.
βNo,β they said together.
Dumbledore waved his wand.
βOh, come now. Proper acting and dancing, please. Otherwise I shall have to remove points and assign detention.β
Regulusβs voice went dangerously soft. βFrom which house?β
βBoth, I imagine.β
Sirius inhaled sharply. βThatβs evil.β
Dumbledore smiled. βTheatre often is.β
Another flick of his wand, and costume magic burst over them.
Sirius was first.
His robes melted into a 1950s greaser look: fitted black trousers, heavy boots, a white shirt open at the throat, and a black leather jacket that settled over his shoulders like it had been waiting all its life to belong to him.
Sirius looked down at himself.
His grin returned by inches.
βOh.β
James screamed. βPads!β
Peter clapped wildly. βYou look brilliant!β
Remus shook his head. βWeβve lost him.β
Lily sighed. βOf course he loves it.β
Mary whistled. βTragically, it works.β
Marlene shouted, βPose!β
Sirius did, immediately, hooking his thumbs in the jacket and tilting his chin with obscene confidence.
Fabian covered his eyes. βHeβs going to be impossible now.β
Gideon said, βGoing to be?β
Alice leaned toward Frank. βIt is a good jacket.β
Frank nodded reluctantly. βIt is.β
Sirius spun once, laughing, then pointed at Regulus. βYour turn.β
Regulus had one second to look profoundly betrayed by existence.
Then Dumbledoreβs magic hit him.
His school robes vanished into black leather and sharp lines. Little leather shorts, thigh-highs, heeled boots, a tight black top, and a cropped leather jacket that hugged him with ruthless precision. Smoky eye makeup darkened his gaze, making his grey eyes look sharper, brighter, colder. His hair shifted under the charm, styled back just enough that the natural blonde poliosis in his fringe, usually hidden, flashed pale against the dark.
The hall went completely silent.
Not awkward silent.
Devastated silent.
Then everyone lost their minds.
Barty stood up so fast he nearly knocked the bench over. βWHAT THE FUCK.β
Evan made a strangled noise and looked away so violently he almost injured his own neck.
Pandora pressed both hands to her mouth, eyes shining with delight.
Dorcas stared for half a second, then said, βUnfair. Deeply unfair.β
At Gryffindor, Jamesβs jaw dropped. βBloody hell.β
Peterβs eyes went round. βIs that Regulus?β
Remus stared with the careful focus of a man taking mental notes against his will. βApparently.β
Lily blinked. βThat isβ¦ a look.β
Mary pointed at him. βOh, that is rude.β
Marlene laughed loudly. βRegulus Black, you absolute weapon.β
Aliceβs hands flew to her cheeks. βHe looks incredible.β
Frank, gentleman that he was, tried to look respectfully at the floor and failed once before managing it.
Fabian leaned over the table. βSomeone check on Rosier.β
Gideon was already looking. βRosier is not well.β
Evan had both elbows on the Slytherin table, face half-hidden behind his hands.
Barty jabbed a finger toward the front. βDumbledore, I have never hated you more and that is a competitive list.β
Regulus looked down at himself.
His face went scarlet, then pale, then deadly.
βSirius.β
Sirius was staring.
Not in the usual smug way. Not laughing. Not teasing.
Just stunned.
Then he swallowed, looked deliberately at the ceiling, and said, βI would like the record to show I am a victim.β
Regulus kicked him in the shin.
Sirius yelped. βOw!β
βGood.β
Dumbledore lifted his wand as the opening music sparked into the air, bright and familiar and impossible to escape.
Sirius looked at Regulus.
Regulus looked at Sirius.
Both of them looked at the staff table with identical hatred.
Dumbledore smiled.
βBegin.β
The charm caught them like invisible strings.
Siriusβs body shifted first, hips rolling into the beat, one hand lifting with a greaserβs swagger he very clearly did not have to fake. Annoyance warred with instinct. Instinct won.
He turned toward Regulus, grin curling back into place, and sang in a low, gruff voice that filled the Great Hall with ridiculous confidence, βI got chills, theyβre multiplying.β
The room exploded again.
James collapsed against Remus. βHeβs doing it.β
Peter was red-faced with laughter.
Remus buried his face in one hand. βOf course heβs doing it well.β
Lily looked like she wanted to be unimpressed and was furious that she couldnβt manage it.
Mary was clapping already.
Marlene shouted, βCommit, Black!β
Sirius did.
He stepped closer, shoulders loose, eyes bright with the sudden wicked realisation that if Dumbledore was forcing this, he might as well weaponise it against Regulus.
βAnd Iβm losing control,β Sirius sang, clutching at his own chest with dramatic agony.
Regulus glared.
Sirius leaned closer, voice dropping into smug warmth. ββCause the power youβre supplyingββ
Regulusβs eyebrow twitched.
Sirius spun, pointed both hands at him, and finished, βItβs electrifying.β
Barty made a gagging noise so theatrical that Dorcas shoved him back onto the bench.
Regulusβs turn came with a sharp shift in the music, and the magic tugged him forward.
He resisted for half a beat.
The charm tugged again.
Regulusβs mouth thinned.
Then he moved.
And unfortunately for everyoneβs continued sanity, Regulus Black could move.
He stepped into the beat with the sort of cold precision that made annoyance look choreographed. The heeled boots clicked against the stone. His hips snapped. His chin tipped. His expression remained murderously bored, which somehow made the whole thing worse.
He pointed at Sirius, voice lighter than Siriusβs, teasing and smooth despite the fury burning in his eyes. βYou better shape up, βcause I need a man.β
The hall screamed.
Sirius nearly broke, coughing a laugh into his hand.
Regulus narrowed his eyes and pushed through, βAnd my heart is set on you.β
James slid under the table.
Peter followed him by accident.
Remus leaned sideways, laughing silently now.
Lily had both hands over her mouth.
Mary was shrieking.
Marlene thumped the table. βThis is the worst thing Iβve ever loved!β
Alice, horrified and entertained, whispered, βHe sings beautifully.β
Frank looked pained. βThatβs not helping.β
Fabian nodded. βNo, it is making this worse.β
Gideon said, βMagnificently worse.β
Regulus stalked around Sirius in a slow circle, gaze sharp as broken glass, and sang, βYou better shape up, you better understand.β
Sirius turned with him, grinning now, fully aware that Regulus hated every second.
Regulus stopped in front of him, lifted one hand, and pressed a single finger under Siriusβs chin just long enough to make the hall explode again.
βTo my heart, I must be true,β he sang, then shoved Siriusβs face away.
Sirius cackled, stumbled back, and caught himself in time for his line, spreading both hands with exaggerated surrender. βNothing left, nothing left for me to do.β
The music swelled.
The invisible choreography pulled them together.
Both brothers went rigid for a second.
Dumbledore cleared his throat meaningfully.
Regulus hissed, βIβll burn his beard.β
Sirius muttered, βGet in line.β
Then the chorus hit, and the magic dragged them into motion.
βYouβre the one that I want,β they sang together, Siriusβs voice deep and rough, Regulusβs lighter and clearer, holding the note just a little longer as if determined to win the song through spite alone.
Sirius threw one arm out dramatically. βOoh, ooh, ooh, honey.β
Regulusβs smile was all teeth. βThe one that I want, You are the one I want.β
Sirius slid across the floor on one knee, arms open, and sang, βOoh, ooh, ooh, honey.β
Regulus stepped smoothly away from him. βThe one that I want, You are the one I want.β
Sirius reached for him.
Regulus turned, planted one boot square against Siriusβs chest, and pushed him back before he could get too close.
The hall went feral.
βOoh, ooh, ooh,β they sang together, Sirius leaning back under the pressure of Regulusβs foot like a man struck by romance and theatre, Regulus looking as if he was strongly considering using the heel.
βThe one I need,β they continued.
Sirius grabbed his own heart and fell backwards onto the floor as if wounded.
Regulus looked down at him with open disgust.
βOh, yes, indeed,β they finished together.
James was lying on the bench now, wheezing. βI canβt breathe.β
Remus, wiping his eyes, said, βThat may be for the best.β
Peter had resurfaced from under the table with his hair sticking up. βDid Regulus just step on him?β
Lily nodded faintly. βYes.β
Mary fanned herself with a napkin. βI fear he ate.β
Marlene pointed at her. βDo not say that where Sirius can hear you.β
Alice looked deeply conflicted. βItβs very wrong, but the choreography is excellent.β
Frank said, βI donβt know where to look.β
Fabian grinned. βAt the disaster, Frank. Always at the disaster.β
Gideon raised his goblet. βTo the disaster.β
At the Slytherin table, Barty was clutching Dorcasβs sleeve.
βI hate this,β he said. βI hate this. I hate that he looks good. I hate that Sirius looks good. I hate theatre.β
Pandora nodded thoughtfully. βYou loved theatre ten minutes ago.β
βI was younger then.β
Evan had his arms folded so tightly he looked carved out of rage. βDumbledore dies first.β
Dorcas patted his shoulder. βGet through the song, Rosier.β
At the front, Sirius had rolled onto his hands and knees because the choreography had apparently decided subtlety was beneath it.
Regulus began walking forward, away from him, every step sharp and deliberate.
Sirius followed behind him on all fours.
The Great Hall hit a volume that probably disturbed the merpeople in the lake.
Regulus glanced over his shoulder, saw Sirius crawling after him, and snapped, under his breath, βGet up.β
Sirius grinned wolfishly. βCanβt. Art.β
βYou are enjoying this too much.β
βIβm surviving.β
βYouβre dead.β
Sirius rose smoothly behind him just as the next verse began, close enough to be annoying but not close enough to die.
Regulus turned his head slightly, smoky eyes cutting sideways, and sang, βIf youβre filled with affection.β
Sirius clasped his hands under his chin like an idiot.
Regulusβs voice softened into exaggerated sweetness. βYouβre too shy to convey.β
Mary lost it.
Marlene stood up, one hand on the table, roaring, βHeβs flirting like a villain!β
Lily, helplessly laughing now, said, βHe is not flirting. He is threatening.β
βSame face on a Black,β Remus said.
Regulus turned fully, walking backward now as Sirius followed. βMeditate in my direction.β
He lifted one hand and crooked two fingers toward himself in a gesture so deliberately mocking that half the hall made wounded noises.
Then he held the last line, voice lilting with poisonous charm. βFeel your way~β
Sirius forgot his own entrance.
For exactly half a second.
Then Regulus smirked.
Siriusβs eyes flashed.
βOh, you littleββ
βSirius,β Dumbledore called cheerfully.
Sirius snapped back into the song, squaring his shoulders and pointing at himself with dramatic resolve. βI better shape up, βcause you need a man.β
Regulus slid closer, circling him again, and answered, βI need a man who can keep me satisfied.β
Barty made a noise like a dying bird and collapsed face-first onto the Slytherin table.
Evan stood halfway up.
Dorcas yanked him back down. βNo.β
Evan said, βIβm leaving.β
Pandora said, βYouβre sitting.β
Evan sat, vibrating with fury.
Sirius, meanwhile, had decided that dignity was a casualty of war.
He lunged into the next line with full greaser bravado, slicking back his hair with one hand. βI better shape up if Iβm gonna prove.β
Regulus stepped into him, placed both hands against Siriusβs chest, and shoved him backward in time with the beat. βYou better prove that my faith is justified.β
Sirius stumbled, then dropped to one knee in front of him with one hand pressed over his heart.
The scream from the Gryffindor table could have cracked glass.
James actually fell off the bench this time.
Peter grabbed his sleeve and went down with him.
Remus looked down at them. βYouβre both embarrassing.β
James, from the floor, gasped, βYouβre laughing.β
βI contain multitudes.β
Lily leaned over them. βGet up before McGonagall sees.β
McGonagall had seen.
McGonagall looked as if she might age backward through sheer stress.
At the front, Sirius tilted his head up at Regulus, eyes bright, voice suddenly very dramatic. βAre you sure?β
Regulus looked down at him.
For one terrible moment, the entire hall held its breath.
Regulus smiled.
It was the kind of smile that made people remember he had been raised in a house where silverware was probably sharpened for emotional support.
βYes,β he sang, sweet as poison. βIβm sure down deep inside.β
Then he grabbed Sirius by the collar and hauled him up.
Sirius let himself be pulled, laughing, then immediately spun Regulus out by the hand as the chorus slammed back in.
Regulusβs eyes widened in outrage as the charm dragged him through the movement.
Sirius caught him by the waist and dipped him.
Regulus hissed, βBlack.β
Sirius whispered, βAlso Black.β
Regulus looked seconds away from biting him.
They snapped upright together.
βYouβre the one that I want, You are the one I want,β they sang, circling each other under the enchanted candlelight.
Siriusβs voice rolled low and grinning. βOoh, ooh, ooh, honey.β
Regulus answered without missing the beat, βThe one that I want, You are the one I want.β
Sirius caught Regulusβs hand and spun him again. βOoh, ooh, ooh, honey.β
Regulusβs boots clicked perfectly as he came out of the turn. βThe one that I want, You are the one I want.β
βOoh, ooh, ooh,β they sang together.
Sirius clutched his chest again and staggered back.
Regulus followed with cool, deliberate steps.
βThe one I need.β
Sirius fell backward into a dramatic lean, and Regulus caught the front of his jacket just before he could hit the ground.
βOh, yes, indeed.β
The hall was no longer merely laughing. It had become a living creature made of shrieks, whistles, applause, and scandal.
Fabian stood on the bench. βAgain!β
Gideon grabbed the back of his robes. βDonβt encourage Dumbledore.β
Alice was laughing into Frankβs shoulder.
Frank was laughing too now, though he looked ashamed of it.
Mary was chanting, βOh, yes, indeed,β under her breath like it had ruined her.
Marlene was pounding the table.
Lily pointed at Sirius. βHe is never allowed to talk about this after tonight.β
Remus looked amused. βHe will talk about nothing else for a week.β
James pulled himself back onto the bench, hair wild. βA week? Iβm framing this memory forever.β
Peter nodded frantically. βSame.β
At the Slytherin table, Barty had recovered only enough to glare with his whole soul.
βI want compensation.β
Pandora smiled. βFor what?β
βMy eyes.β
Dorcas pointed toward the front. βYour eyes are glued to it.β
βThatβs trauma.β
Evanβs jaw worked. βI am going to become a ghost just to haunt this hall.β
Pandora patted his arm. βThatβs commitment.β
The choreography dragged Sirius behind Regulus again.
This time Sirius stood close at his back, hands landing at Regulusβs hips with a flourish that was clearly intended to annoy him as much as humanly possible.
Regulus froze.
The room detonated.
Sirius leaned over his shoulder, grinning so hard his face might split.
Regulus did not turn his head.
In a voice only Sirius could hear, he said, βYou have three seconds to remove your hands before I remove them from your body.β
Sirius, still smiling, sang with him as the chorus repeated, βYouβre the one that I want, You are the one I want.β
Regulus elbowed him lightly in the ribs on the beat.
Regulus twisted free, voice sharp and bright. βThe one that I want, You are the one I want.β
Sirius lunged after him, hand outstretched. βOoh, ooh, ooh, honey.β
Regulus stepped around him, making Sirius chase.
βThe one that I want, You are the one I want.β
Sirius dropped into another knee-slide, arms thrown wide. βOoh, ooh, ooh.β
Regulus walked past him, then paused and looked back.
βThe one I need.β
Sirius clutched his chest and tipped sideways like a man slain.
Regulus lifted his chin.
βOh, yes, indeed.β
Dumbledore was clapping along at the staff table, looking thoroughly pleased with himself.
McGonagall was not clapping.
Slughorn, however, appeared delighted and mildly confused.
The music kept going.
Regulus looked betrayed by this fact.
βHow many choruses does this song have?β he snapped.
Sirius popped back up beside him. βAs many as destiny requires.β
βI hate destiny.β
βI know. She told me.β
The charm caught them both again.
Sirius swept in, caught Regulus around the waist, and lifted him clean off the ground in a spin.
Regulus made an outraged sound.
The Great Hall went insane.
Barty shouted, βPUT HIM DOWN.β
Evan shouted, βNOW.β
Sirius spun once, twice, laughing as Regulus gripped his shoulders with murder in his fingers.
Regulusβs voice somehow stayed perfectly on pitch as they continued, βYouβre the one that I want, You are the one I want.β
Sirius set him down, still grinning. βOoh, ooh, ooh, honey.β
Regulus shoved him hard enough to send him staggering. βThe one that I want, You are the one I want.β
Sirius turned the stumble into a dance step because unfortunately he was Sirius Black and the universe rewarded his nonsense.
βOoh, ooh, ooh, honey,β he sang, sliding back into Regulusβs orbit.
Regulusβs smile sharpened. βThe one that I want, You are the one I want.β
They moved together now despite themselves, boots striking stone, shoulders rolling, steps snapping into place. Sirius was all fire and swagger, loud laughter threaded through his voice; Regulus was ice and smoke, furious precision wrapped in leather and dark eyes.
βOoh, ooh, ooh,β they sang.
Sirius reached for him.
Regulus caught his wrist and twisted him into a spin instead.
βThe one I need.β
Sirius came out of it with his hair in his face and delight in his grin.
βOh, yes, indeed.β
James pointed wildly. βRegulus just spun him!β
Remus nodded, deadpan. βSelf-defence.β
Mary laughed. βSelf-defence with choreography.β
Marlene yelled, βDo it again!β
Lily grabbed a bread roll and threw it at Marlene.
Marlene caught it in her mouth and threw both fists up.
Alice nearly cried laughing.
Frank stared. βThat was impressive.β
Fabian said, βThe bread or the dancing?β
Gideon answered, βYes.β
The final stretch began, the music bright and relentless.
Sirius, drunk on attention and sibling warfare, grabbed Regulusβs hand again and tugged him close.
Regulus went willingly for half a step, purely because the magic forced him, then stepped on Siriusβs boot.
Sirius yelped through the opening line.
βYouβre the one that I want, You are the one I want,β they sang, both glaring now.
βOoh, ooh, ooh, honey,β Sirius got out, laughter cracking through the last word.
Regulus leaned close enough that the whole hall screamed again and sang, coldly sweet, βThe one that I want.β
The music hit its last note.
For one suspended second, Sirius and Regulus were frozen in the final pose: Sirius half-kneeling, one hand still caught in Regulusβs, head tipped up like a lovestruck greaser in a school play from hell; Regulus standing over him in black leather and heeled boots, smoky-eyed, pale streak in his fringe gleaming under the candles, expression promising murder, arson, and possibly litigation.
Then the charm released.
Regulus immediately let go.
Siriusβs hand dropped.
The Great Hall exploded into applause.
It was deafening.
Students stamped their feet. Goblets rattled. Someone at the Ravenclaw table wolf-whistled. Someone at Hufflepuff shouted for an encore and was immediately hushed by three terrified friends.
James was clapping so hard he looked like he might dislocate something.
Peter was still laughing.
Remus gave a slow, elegant clap, eyes bright with wicked amusement.
Lily shook her head, but she was smiling despite herself.
Mary was on her feet. βThat was horrible. That was brilliant. I need to erase it from my mind.β
Alice applauded with both hands near her face. βIβm so sorry, but it was good.β
Frank nodded. βVery good. Deeply unsettling. But good.β
Fabian lifted his goblet. βTo family spirit.β
Gideon added, βAnd institutional chaos.β
At the Slytherin table, Barty was not clapping.
He was glaring.
Evan was also not clapping.
He looked like a man writing a hit list in his head.
Pandora was clapping softly, delighted by the shape of disaster.
Dorcas clapped twice, then stopped. βI refuse to encourage this.β
Regulus turned toward Dumbledore.
The hall began quieting at once, because Regulus Black walking in heels toward a smiling headmaster while dressed like the most dangerous person in a muggle drive-in was, apparently, more compelling than dessert.
Sirius stood and dusted off his trousers.
βThat went well,β he said.
Regulus stopped.
Very slowly, he looked over his shoulder.
Siriusβs grin faltered.
Regulus said, βRun.β
Sirius did not need telling twice.
He bolted for the Gryffindor table.
The hall erupted again.
James stood with arms open. βPads, mate, that wasββ
Sirius vaulted over the bench and shoved himself behind Remus. βProtection.β
Remus did not move. βAbsolutely not.β
βYouβre my friend.β
βYouβre a liability.β
Peter tried to hide Sirius with a napkin.
Lily said, βThat wonβt work.β
Marlene was chanting, βGet him, Regulus.β
Mary joined in immediately.
Alice covered her mouth. βDonβt actually hurt him.β
Frank looked between them. βMaybe only a little.β
Fabian and Gideon both leaned forward like spectators at a Quidditch final.
Regulus reached the Gryffindor table.
Still in the cursed outfit.
Still furious.
Still, unfortunately, looking so good that half the table forgot to be afraid for a second.
Sirius peered over Remusβs shoulder. βIn my defenceββ
Regulus said, βThere is no defence.β
βI was under magical coercion.β
βYou crawled.β
James wheezed.
Remus turned his head slowly toward Sirius. βYou did crawl.β
Sirius pointed at Dumbledore. βHe made me theatrical.β
Lily said, βNo one makes you theatrical. Thatβs pre-existing.β
Marlene nodded. βChronic condition.β
Mary grinned. βTerminal.β
Sirius placed a hand over his heart. βBetrayed by my own people.β
Regulus reached across Remus, grabbed Sirius by the front of his leather jacket, and tugged him close enough to hiss, βIf you ever mention this again, I will transfigure all your trousers into confetti.β
Sirius blinked.
Then his grin crept back, because he had no survival instinct and never had.
βYou have to admit,β he said, βwe sounded fantastic.β
Regulus stared at him.
Sirius leaned back slightly. βToo soon?β
Regulus shoved him backward into James.
James caught him, still laughing. βDefinitely too soon.β
At the staff table, Dumbledore rose again, looking pleased beyond measure.
βWonderful!β he called. βA spirited performance. Ten points to Gryffindor and ten points to Slytherin for musical courage.β
Regulus turned around so sharply his jacket snapped.
βTen?β
Dumbledore smiled. βEach.β
βYou threatened detention.β
βAnd you rose beautifully above it.β
Sirius muttered, βHe rose in heels.β
Regulus whipped back toward him.
Sirius hid behind James this time.
James, still laughing, said, βNo, Iβm on his side for this one.β
Peter raised a shaky hand. βMe too.β
Remus nodded. βAs am I.β
Lily said, βEveryone is.β
Marlene called across the hall, βEven I am, and I enjoyed it!β
Barty shouted from Slytherin, βI WANT THOSE POINTS DOUBLED FOR EMOTIONAL DAMAGE.β
Dorcas added, βAnd compensation.β
Pandora said, βAnd perhaps therapy.β
Evan stood, very calm in a way that suggested violence had become a philosophy. βProfessor Dumbledore.β
The hall quieted again.
Dumbledore looked pleasantly at him. βYes, Mr Rosier?β
Evan smiled.
It was not a nice smile.
βIf you ever pick that song for them again,β he said, βI will personally ensure the next showcase is a tragedy.β
A hush.
Then Fabian whispered loudly, βI like him.β
Gideon nodded. βHe has stage presence.β
Dumbledoreβs eyes twinkled. βNoted.β
Regulus pointed at Dumbledore. βNo more showcases.β
Dumbledore looked around the hall, where hundreds of students were still breathless with laughter, scandal, and the particular joy of having watched something they would be talking about until graduation.
βWe shall see,β he said.
McGonagall stood. βWe shall not.β
That earned the loudest cheer of the night.
Sirius, sensing safety in noise, leaned toward Regulus.
Regulus did not look at him.
Sirius said, very quietly, βFor what itβs worth, the streak looks good.β
Regulusβs expression flickered.
Only for half a second.
Then he looked at Sirius with cold contempt.
βConfetti,β he said.
Sirius nodded solemnly. βUnderstood.β
Regulus turned on his heel and stalked back toward the Slytherin table, leather jacket sharp, boots clicking, pale fringe bright under candlelight. Barty immediately threw his robe over Regulusβs shoulders like he was shielding him from the concept of Dumbledore. Evan stood to make room. Pandora smiled at him like he was the most fascinating storm cloud she had ever seen. Dorcas pushed his goblet toward him without a word.
Across the hall, Sirius dropped back onto the Gryffindor bench, still grinning like an idiot with death at his heels.
James clapped him on the back. βMate.β
Peter shook his head. βThat was the strangest thing Iβve ever seen.β
Remus picked up his fork again. βAnd we go to Hogwarts, so that is saying something.β
Lily glanced toward Dumbledore, then toward Regulus, then toward Sirius.
βNever speak of this again,β she said.
Mary laughed. βWeβre absolutely speaking of this again.β
Marlene grinned. βEvery day.β
Alice sighed, smiling despite herself. βPoor Regulus.β
Frank nodded. βPoor everyone, honestly.β
Fabian raised his goblet toward the Slytherin table.

Supp, so I ship wolfstar and jegulus mostly ok, i Jily too but i meant like, if I involved Reg, I'd choose jegulus. Now now, i was intrigued by this prongsfoot fic, Storm Warnings by Nyx_21 on ao3. Now, its a given that prongsfoot goes in hand with moonwater, its like we just switch the black brothers fr. So james finds out remus is dating reg and dude goes, "oh my god, why would ANYONE wanna date that despicable little shit, ewww" and im like, YOU like a fic ago. Its just soo funny, like in jegulus, james obviouslyy likes both the black brothers probly likes siri more even. Anywayss whats even more crazy, is like james brings flowers for siri, and he tucks a blue one in siri's hair, and siri tycks a yellow one in jamie's hair!! DO YOU SEE THE BYLER VISION
"im not saying feminism is for everyone but-" the fuck? well im saying that. feminism is for everyone. yes even cishet men will benefit from feminism and cishet men should be feminists because cishet men are indeed harmed by the patriarchy; nowhere near to the extent that women are, but having a culture that is fully equal and anti-misogynist benefits everyone. have we forgotten that lifting up the disenfranchised people in society helps all of us as a collective? "im not saying that universal and unalienable human rights are for everyone but-" YES THE FUCK THEY ARE LOL

Funny how everyone says "fuck canon! we don't need that! i'm gonna make these characters however i want!" But then the MINUTE someone says something y'all don't agree with, you start pulling out the canon cards...
"they're british, they wouldn't do xyz"
"stop using american slang! they wouldn't say that!"
"hogwarts is a british school, so why would all these characters be from different countries? you can change their race, but they're all from england"
Maybe stop telling people how to play with their toys? If it's not hurting you or others (and by this I mean causing some sort of actual harm, not just that you don't agree with the topic someone's writing about), then literally just leave them alone.
guys thereβs an artist who has two AMAZING songs about the marauders, her name is robyn m and sheβs on every streaming platform plus instagram, please go check her out. the songs are called one day (pre hogwarts about everybody), and time passed (lilyβs pov of the afterlife)
Huh WHY isn't this character whose best friends were betrayed and killed by his other friend, then was then framed for this and imprisoned in the most inhumane prison for 12 years not acting like a rational, calm person?? Extremely confusing 0/10 character.
Be fr, Sirius couldn't save his best friends from the said rat, but he had a chance to save the best friends' son. Of course, he took the chance and went to kill peter pettigrew, and honestly we can't expect him to make a full binder of proper well thought plans, WHILE he was hiding from azkaban. And, the first thing he did, was check on his godson.
Guys, so yk that couple that climbed the empire state building? ANd everyones like rosekiller right? and I COMPLETELY AGREE. Like yes, deffo rosekiller would do it.
But yk, who else would do it? Harry and Ginny. LIKE, I can't stop thinking about this gang, like harry and ginny would slay, and then proceed to not get arrested cause chosen one and famous quidditch player priviledges
Also also, romantic prongsfoot tooo, like bro, i don't even ship them (I'm a wolfstar girll), but if they did date, they'd totally do this, and james would propose, and it would have been MAJESTIC.
