Uni started for me and is all over the place with the virus and everything so I don’t get much time to draw. That and not even my friends are liking/sharing my stuff anymore so it’s not really motivating lately lol

The hub was quiet. The new year saw the community full of renewed vigour after Jack’s end of year vlog where he talked about 2019 being the year of PMA and fun.

The veteran already witnessed the growing sense of fun around the hub, fan art and stories were flooding into there respective areas. They were people hunting down missing clothing items that jack used to wear and memes were coming in fast.

They had watched fellow veterans in their element as well as seeing some new faces who were starting to come out of their shells. They smiled at the thought until they saw something that made them frown a little.

A lone figure was sitting on one of the sofas, hugging their knees and looking upset.

The veteran went over straight away and sat down next to the hunched up person.

“Hey, are you alright?” They asked, softly.

The other person looked up, tears making their eyes shine. They wiped their nose.

“I-I don’t think I belong here”

The veteran looked at them with confusion.

“Why ever not?” They questioned “everyone’s welcome here”

The person shook their head.

“I don’t feel like I do.” They replied, sadly “I don’t draw, or theorise, or make edits. I don’t make gifs or write stories. I don’t create anything. I’m silent in here and not important.” They put their forehead on their knees, letting out quiet sobs.

The veteran rubbed the person’s back and thought for a moment before speaking

“What’s your name?” They asked

The person gave their name once they calmed down enough to the veteran who nodded and told them to come with them.

“There’s something I’d like you to see”

The veteran took them to the main part of the hub which was in near darkness. They went up to a keyboard shaped tile on the wall and tapped on the person’s name.

A light glowed near them bearing the person’s name, lighting up an area on the wall

“See?” Said the veteran, “now watch this.” They made the whole room come to life with light. “This is all of us, every single one gives light to this room, however……” they tapped a few keys and the room dimmed significantly. “I took away all those who declared themselves as silent, the ones who feel they don’t ‘do’ anything.” They looked around the room. “Not half as bright as it should be, huh?”

The person shook their head.

The veteran put a hand on their shoulder.

“The silent ones, including you, are always important, even if they can’t see it for themselves. You still give light to the place and it would be a lot darker here without you. Never forget that, okay?”

The person nodded, giving them a small smile.

The veteran gestured to the keyboard.

“Light this place up again with the silent ones”

The person knew exactly what to do, which surprised them. They tapped in the correct code and in a blink of an eye, the main part of the hub was flooded with light from every name in the community.

“You’ve been in this part of the hub for a while” said someone behind them.

The veteran nodded, trying to work out how to respond, watching the lights of the hub shining above them.

“It’s been a long time” the person added. “I’ve seen some lights dim as people move on”

“Same here” the veteran replied, the hint of sadness in their voice was unmissable. “As long as they’re happy though, that’s what really matters” they smiled at the person who had joined them.

The person looked up at the lights, puzzled at the different levels of brightness and noticing none ever had actually fully gone out.

“Do you ever feel like some need switching off completely?”

The veteran shook their head

“Just because they’ve moved on, doesn’t mean they’ve been entirely forgotten. They made their mark here, they’re always going to be part of the hub.” They watched as one light that was a little darker than the others around it started to brighten up. “Besides…..”

Both turned around to see a person coming through the door to the hub, it was a familiar face that the veteran knew. They smiled warmly at the person coming through. It was good to see them again and the veteran was looking forward to hearing all about the new discoveries and adventures they had.
