graphic design lesson: too much texture and a thin white ring is all it takes to make spotify look like its stuck downloading an update

i really didn’t think they’d keep this thing around, yet here we are.

please take a close look at this app icon with me.

i wish i could believe tons of effort went into this.

the logo is off centre & off kilter which isn’t.. ideal for a tiny button. im assuming this is done rather than actually warping the logo’s shape onto a mirror ball. which is conceptually cool.

my second point is this. (points)

photoshop sparkle brush.

that said, take a step back and marvel with me now at this visually striking work of iconography!

#ive done it a favour taking away the bounding box that cramps it #but its still visually jumbled #barely getting the point across isnt the goal of graphic design. you’ll just have to trust me #high contrast is so powerful and they literally picked the most visually busy and high-contrast texture possible. the fucking mirror ball.#to texture around their logo that they MOVED #(pointing again) PHOTOSHOP SPARKLE BRUSH #LIKE AT LEAST USE TWO DIFFERENT SPARKLES #ohhhh i think im starting to figure out the disco ball. it might be ‘photobashed’#using stock imagery and slicing it up/ pasting it together. is a skill.#but not really. good for iconography.#my eye could tell the curve of the sphere was just weird and wrong #and i think the top half and bottom half are two different source images #and the middle may have some repeated tiles #the rings on sphere created by a mirror ball should be visually prominent #because they’re uniform rings on a sphere #scan down the texture and watch how it goes from #curve curve curve curve FLAT.#thats two different points of perspective #im an art college dropout if anyones ever curious #i had a few genius professors and i took everything i learned with a lot of weight #i have no credentials to show but if you let me start talking on a subject of design #ill either never stop explaining what i know #and when i run out of things i know #ill start deconstructing to see what i could still learn #THE GRIND IS RELENTLESS #MIND PRISON! MIND PRISON!

#rb #my first taste of game dev. if you dont count all that little big planet i played #wish i did more tbh- would love to help make an update in the future #i did environment tiling- mostly bases for shapes / colour picking / geometric tiles #my weakest point in all of art is nature trees and leaves. landscapes #i love trees. cant draw one for my life #like if i could pull off a tree theres a chance i could have kept a illustrator job i picked up YEARS ago #i did it all for them. but then they asked to see me do some trees #SIGH #i guess that was a taste of gamedev too #i made placeholder sprites for a merging game that never took off #i think i did pretty good but yknow. they were just placeholders so its not like my art made it to the final #despite it being cleanly drawn. painstakingly so.#rambling
