‘I’m in serious shit, I feel totally lost’ - It’s pretty obvious that Hollanovs relationship could get them into serious issues with various things in their careers and whatnot, and Shane’s internal monologue, especially in the book, going back and forth about how he feels about Ilya and whether he should break things off… he definitely feels incredibly lost

‘Being with you has opened my eyes’ - Meeting Ilya did so many things for Shane, he realised that he was more into men than women and he could not understand why his experiences with women are so unsatisfactory, we see him constantly battling with his identity as he tries to figure out who he is after he’s met Ilya.

‘I keep closing my eyes, but I can’t block you out’ - THE NAME OF MY HR PLAYLIST!!! Sooooo perfectly describes how they feel with each other, trying to move on and distract themselves with relations with other people, like Shane with Rose. But no matter what they do, they come back to each other.

‘Want to fly to a place, where it’s just you and me. Nobody else, so we can be free’ - ✨the queer experience ✨ wanting to just get away, how Ilya and Shane cannot be with each other in public and show affection, but wanting to love freely and openly.

‘Im all mixed up, feeling cornered and rushed’ - All his feelings are jumbled, feels of sadness, pressure, love, fear, shame. I can imagine there’s lots of times where Shane felt cornered and rushed- where he wanted to tell people about Ilya and his relationship but he couldn’t. When he wanted to not lie to his parents bc they KNOW that’s not who he is.

‘Want to fly her (him) away where the sun and the rain, come in over my face, wash away all the shame’ - Again that feeling of wanting to just go somewhere, anywhere that it’s just Hollanov together. I imagine Shane feels immense shame at times when he grapples with his identity, the book makes it very clear that he’s in denial.

‘When they stop and stare, don’t worry me, ‘cause I’m feeling for her (him) what she’s (he’s) feeling for me’ - Shane feels a constant pressure from the fans, the media, to meet their expectations and act accordingly. Ilya feels the pressure of his father and his country. Shane constantly worries someone’s going to see them. Shane and Ilya feel similar things for each other at similar times, and I think they make that clear in their eye contact, like when they were in the gym or the shower, and little words were said but they still knew they wanted each other.

‘I can try to pretend, I can try to forget’- a HUGE one for them. Shane, who pretends that the guy he’s sleeping with isn’t his male rival, or at least pretends he’s going this, Shane who pretends to like women, Shane who pretends to himself that he doesn’t like men. Shane who tries to forget Ilya and his feelings for him when he goes out with Rose. Ilya who pretends to be nonchalant but he actually bought ginger ale just for Shane and watches all shanes videos and smiles at his messages and who definitely blushes even tho “Russians do not do this”. Ilya who tries to pretend he’s just upset someone else has his favourite ‘toy’ (Rose dates Shane) when actually he’s just in love with him. Ilya who pretends to be brave, that the pressure doesn’t get to him, but it actually does. Ilya who tries to forget how he felt with Shane when he goes out with other people but actually he never can.

‘Mother looking at me’/‘Daddy looking at me’- Shane and wanting his parents support and not wanting to lie to them. Ilya hoping his mom can see him holding the cup and not wanting to disappoint his father

‘Running through my head’ - In general just how everything is so chaotic for Shane and Ilya and they have so many emotions to handle.

‘This is not enough.’- How Shane and Ilya want more from their relationship, to not be just rivals, to be sex partners, to be lovers, to be public and not hidden. THIS is NEVER enough.

Ilya Rozanov is leaving behind Russia and going to Canada. Lucky for him, he gets to stay with a new family. But once he meets Shane Hollander, sparks fly and he starts suspecting that Shane is more than what he seems.

I'm sorry but this is not the same person. It's almost uncanny how much Connor Storrie disappears into Ilya Rozanov. I know much has been said about the accent, the quick language acquisition. But to me what's even more fascinating is the way everything about the way he looks changes for the role - his facial expressions, the way he hold himself, all of those little micro expressions. Because cultural differences are not just in the language. A masterclass really, that whole performance. Looking forward to following his long and successful acting career.
