I know this is a different post I’m sorry but I have thoughts about Omegaverse and how it relates to Ilya and Shane UGH.
Okay so, so many people online the fanfic sites love to post that Shane would be the omega because he’s the bottom. And like… no. There are also a lot of alpha-alpha or omega-omega pairings for those two which are getting closer to what I see. But like walk with me here.
How I see it, Ilya is the omega and Shane is the alpha. Keep walking with me. I still think Ilya tops and Shane bottoms that doesn’t change, but I just think that even when it comes to their backgrounds this dynamic fits them both so well.
I have to write a little bit of an Ilya POV I can’t get this out of my head
A month after his 11th birthday Ilya wakes up feeling… weird. His brain feels foggy and there’s an uncomfortable feeling in is stomach that he just can’t place. His father and his brother had gone on a trip for the police academy for the summer so it’s only him and his mother at home for the next 3 months, he’d later realize how thankful he was for that. He walks over to his mother’s room making sure not to be too loud just in case she was sleeping but she’s already up and getting ready for their day together. They always went out to the garden whenever his father wasn’t home, talking sweetly to the flowers to make sure they grow fast and strong before the harsh winter makes everything barren again.
He calls out for his mama and as soon as she turns to look at him and the look on her face tells him something is wrong. No. Not wrong. She looks at him with understanding. She looks at him like she knows exactly what is happening and she wishes it wasn’t. Mama sits him down and talks him through everything. What exactly is happening to him right now, who to call if anything feels wrong, who he can’t say a word to.
That’s when he understands it. Omega. He’s an omega. His eyes well up before he can even get a word out. He can’t be an omega. Omegas have to stay home and take care of the house. Omegas can’t play hockey they’re too weak and small. Mama tries to calm him down but next thing he knows he’s on the floor hyperventilating. Not even his mother is an omega, she’s a beta. How can she even understand what he’s feeling. How can she even start to feel-
All of a sudden he smells flowers. His mother is hugging him tightly showing him just how much she understands. She explains to him why she feels so free when his father isn’t home, tells him why they make sure to spend most of the day outside when she’s off her blockers. She shows him that she’s been hiding this from everyone she knows since she was a 13 year old with a promising path as a figure skater. She tells him about her injury when she was barely 16, how it made her step away from the sport anyways and how sad that had made her until it lead to her having Ilya.
He cries, a lot. Tells her that he really wants to keep playing hockey, that he loves how he feels on the ice. She tells him that she’ll make sure that he can. They stay in bed that day, the smell of honey slowly mixing with the spring garden in the air. It hurts, a lot, but having his mother hugging him through it and telling him everything will be alright really makes it feel okay. In the bits of time that the pain goes away she makes sure to show him the basics, how to make a nest, how to scent certain things, and tells him how his heats might be in the future.
After his first heat passes she shows him where to put the scent patches and takes him to the doctor. She greets them warmly, takes a look at the worry in Irina’s eyes and instantly understands. She runs through all the necessary tests and talks Ilya through all of the changes his body will go through, all of the conversations that he’ll have to have in order to keep this all confidential, who he can trust and who he can’t trust. At the end of the appointment she looks at him and his mother sadly and hands them enough suppressants to last them another year. How the suppressants will help him only have to go through one heat a year. She says she wishes they didn’t have to hide and sends them on their way home.
Once they get back home they go on with their regular lives, a lot of the little oddities his mother only does when his father isn’t home finally making sense to him. They spend a month in bliss, he’s learning to understand what being an omega is and mama is happy and free from the suppressants that make everything feel dull. A week into August mama sits him down again. She explains how they’ll have to start taking the suppressants. How they’ll have to clean the house top to bottom in order for there to not be any lingering scents. How he’ll feel a little dulled out from the suppressants. He’s been researching a little too, so he asks her if finding the right person for you really makes the suppressants be a bit faulty, if falling in love can make them stop working. She looks at him and smiles sadly, it’s never happened to her so she doesn’t have the answers. She’s not open about even using the suppressants so it’s not like she can ask around. She tells him she hopes that he can be the one to answer that for him, that he finds someone that he loves completely and that they make him feel safe enough to let go.
The suppressants make him feel like a shell of himself, but when his father gets home Ilya realizes that the yelling isn’t getting to him as much.
His mother never really got to find out if love makes you weird, she’s not even there to hold him through his second heat.
He’s thankful that his father and his brother love to go out together for months at a time during the summers, he uses hockey training as an excuse and uses the time to let go for a little and refill his supply with the doctor. At 16 he tells his father that he feels like he’s settled. He went to the doctor to make sure and his tests came back confirming he was a beta, he shows them to his father without telling him that the same kind doctor that has been helping him for years also falsified the papers so that his father would let him keep playing. He started smoking young, looking to feel something when his world felt dulled out by the suppressants.
His physique never suffered from his designation. He’s tall and muscular, most people assume he’s an alpha anyways. Father and the team have never had any suspicions. The suppressants have never been faulty.
That was until Shane Hollander decided to shake his hand 2 times in less than 5 minutes and looked at him all content and excited. He’s glad the smell of smoke lingered in the air. He’s glad that they’re forced to take suppressants anyways during sports events. Because maybe if they hadn’t been, Hollander would have been able to sense the lingering smell of honey in the air.
Ilya makes them wear patches and keep taking suppressants during their encounters and Shane is so sure that it’s because Ilya feels repulsed by the idea of Shane being an alpha and being the bottom but Ilya is lowkey freaking out because holy shit you’re making the suppressants I’ve been taking for 7 years fully just stop working and if you find me out you’ll just want to make me your house wife what the fuck I’m not letting that happen.
