WHUMPTOBER is a month-long, prompt-based creation CHALLENGE (think: Inktober, but whumpier). There are four prompts for each day of the month, giving 124 for you to play with! There is also a list of 18 alternative prompts that can be subbed in for any day to give participants as much creative freedom as possible.
All prompts are meant to serve as inspiration without being taken literally (e.g. you donât have to include the exact wording of prompts into your work). Feel free to run rampant on interpretation. For example, if the prompt is âflame", you could create something with reference to a candle/campfire, your character could have suffered a burn, or the flame could be a reference to an âold flameâ - an old relationship. Itâs truly down to you!
You can produce work in any media you choose, including but not limited to: writing, visual artwork, photo/video/audio edits, paper crafts and elaborate recommendation lists (not just a list of links). You can participate as much or as little as you want (i.e. you donât have to do ALL the prompts if you donât want to) and prompts can be used in any order. They are also free to use even after the event ends.
Please make sure to read the Event Info and FAQ carefully, as most of your questions will be answered there already. For everything else, you are welcome to come to our ask box or ask questions in our Discord server here.

Welcome back to the Whumperless Whump Event of July, where we celebrate the situational and environmental side of our community via beating the shit out of our blorbos!
FAQ and plain text prompts under the cut!
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How are the prompts divided?
Q: Where can I find the prompts list?
A: @whumperless-whump-event on Tumblr.
A: The title is a âthemeâ for the day, followed by two tropes and a dialog prompt.
A: Absolutely.
Q: Can I use the title as a prompt?
A: Not at all.
Q: Do I have to use all of the prompts?
Q: Can I use all of the prompts?
A: Absolutely. If it's fun, go for it--don't feel pressured to finish them all, but do follow what's inspiring you.
Q: If I'm writing a chronological story, can I swap the days to make it fit the timeline?
A: Yes. Just make sure you tag each piece with the prompt and day you're filling.
Q: Can I have early or late entries?
A: Yes. Early and late entries will not be reblogged to the event account, though.
Q: Is there an Ao3 collection?
A: Yes! This year's collection can be found here, or through searching whumperless_whump_event_july2025. Please remember to submit this year's prompts to the 2025 collection and NOT the 2024 one!
Q: Can I write NSFW?
A: You absolutely can, but the event blog will not reblog any prompt fill rated Explicit. Please ensure you tag NSFW appropriately.
Q: Can I use AI?
A: No.
Q: Can a whumper be included in the prompt fill?
A: The short answer is no. The long answer is that you cannot have the role of whumper in your prompt fill (aka: no whumper-on-whumpee); however, if the character you want to be a whumpee or a caretaker happens to be a whumper, then as long as they are not fulfilling the role of whumper, it's fine. Also, if there is a whumper, it must be totally impersonal and faceless. Here are some examples for clarification:
A character's drink is spiked at a party.
OKAY: The whumper who spiked the drink is never mentioned and is completely faceless, and the story is directly about whumpee recovering.
NOT WHUMPERLESS: The whumper who spiked the drink kidnaps the whumpee.
A character is left alone in a storm.
OKAY: The character is stranded or lost.
NOT WHUMPERLESS: Whumper tied them to a post and left them in the storm.
A character is mugged on the street.
OKAY: The whumper is a stranger, faceless, and the focus is on Whumpee.
NOT WHUMPERLESS: The whumper is a stalker and there to kidnap Whumpee.
All in all, if your goal is to fulfill the event, then try to avoid a whumper. If you're using the prompts elsewhere, then ignore this; but in the spirit of the event, no whumper roles please.
Q: How do I tag my posts?
A: Tag with #whumperless whump event, #wwevent 2025 and #wwevent day [x](Don't just tag wwe, that's wresting.) Then, tag triggers and content warnings. Please put these first in the tag order! It just makes it easier to reblog.
Q: How do I get reblogged?
A: Mention this blog in your post! It's the easiest way for me to find you. Otherwise, I won't reblog it. (This also means if you do not want your post reblogged to the event, just don't mention the blog, and it'll stay private.)
I think that's about it. That's a lot, so if you've got any questions, feel free to shoot me an ask. I'm happy to help!
PROMPTS:
INSULT TO INJURY: Infected wounds / Hurt and ill / âFate really has it out for you, huh.â
PUBLIC MISINFORMATION: Presumed dead / Search party / âThere's a hand, I can see them!â
IT'S NOT YOU, IT'S ME: Left behind / Attempted Martyr / âGet out while you can, and don't look back.â
LIKE A KALEIDOSCOPE: Numbness / Dissociation / âCan I hold your hand?â
AT LEAST IT'S NOT MANUAL: Trapped in a car / Stranded / âYou can't drive like this.â
DOOMED BY THE NARRATIVE: Scheduled execution / Near death experience / âThat was too close.â
AHOY THERE MATEYS: Motion sickness / Washed ashore / âI hate the ocean.â
CHEF MIS-STEAK: Hot stove / Slip of the knife / âI swear, I'm usually better at this.â
SCHEDULE YOUR MAINTENANCE: Lack of self care / Sick day / âJust take a nap. I can handle the rest.â
Once again, it is just me running the event, so please be aware of any human error. I am grateful for all the participation with choosing the blog theme as well as picking this year's prompts! I hope everyone has a good Whumpcember, and now, here are the rules:
Prompts should be answered with whump as the main focus
Fanfic! Gif! Text post! Fanart! Fan video! Any piece of media that you can possibly make that has whump counts!
You can use the prompts any time! Don't feel the need to rush
Though, prompts answered during December will most likely be reblogged
Post anywhere! AO3, Wattapad, Tumblr, or even Fanfic.Net! So as long as you make a Tumblr post with a link to the answered prompt it may be reblogged.
When posting onto Tumblr you can either @ the blog or tag with #whumpcember24 and the day's tag, such as #whumpcember24 day1
Don't forget to add any warnings necessary, such as NSFW or sexual content
An AO3 Collection will go out on December 1 and close January 1, it's not mandatory, but if you want your works saved in a collection, make sure you get it in on time!
At the end of the month a masterpost will go out to all participants and a badge you can save stating that you are either a participant or completionist. In order to be on the masterpost though, you will have to fill out a google form at the end of month; don't worry it'll take two minutes!
If you have any more questions, send me an ask, but please read the FAQ first!
Anya is live and ready to show you everything. Watch her strip, dance, and perform exclusive shows just for you. Interact in real-time and make your fantasies come true.

Event Info & Rules
WHUMPTOBER is a month-long, prompt-based creation challenge (think: Inktober, but whumpier). There are 31 official themes this year - one for each day of the month - which can be used, skipped, or combined in any way youâd like. They are meant to serve as inspiration without being taken literally (e.g. you donât have to include the exact wording of prompts into your work). Feel free to run rampant on interpretation. For example, if the prompt is âflame", you could create something with reference to a candle/campfire, your character could have suffered a burn, or the flame could be a reference to an âold flameâ - an old relationship. Itâs truly down to you!
In total, there are 4 prompts for each day. These are optional suggestions and can be used in conjunction with the theme, or as options/alternatives. We want to give everyone as much creative freedom as possible, as well as increase event accessibility for folks with triggers and squicks. There is also a list of 15 alternative prompts that can be subbed in for any day, again to give participants as much creative freedom as possible.
Creators can PRODUCE work in any media they choose, including but not limited to: writing, visual artwork, photo/video/audio edits, paper crafts and elaborate recommendation lists (not just a list of links). Creators can PARTICIPATE as much or as little as they want (i.e. you donât have to do ALL the prompts if you donât want to) and prompts can be used in any order. They are also free to use even after the event ends.
When uploading Whumptober content to your blog, be sure to tag it with:

#no.1, #no.2, #no.3, âŚ..(theme number)
#bruises, #stabbing, âŚ..(the theme or specific prompt you chose)
#altprompt âŚ..(if you use an altprompt, tag the post with the number of the prompt you replace)
#fandom or #OC, âŚ..(ironman, original content, oc, etc.)
#medium âŚ..(gifs, fic, podcast, art, etc.)
#teeth, #etc âŚ..(trigger warnings & any additional tags. Keep in mind not to add âtwâ in front but only use the word/trigger itself)
#nsfwhump âŚ..(only for nsfw content)
#your own tags go here
PLEASE BE DILIGENT WITH YOUR TAGGING. Only properly tagged posts are considered for archiving on the official @whumptober-archive blog. They must be tagged in the order above. An elaborate post about our tagging system can be found [here]
Unfortunately, due to the sheer number of participants in recent years, we cannot guarantee your work will be archived. A random selection of properly tagged posts from all genres will be reblogged each day.
Whumpers who produce content for 31 total theme days are considered event completionists and will be tagged in a masterpost at the end of the month. A form will be published at the beginning of November asking you to tell us if you completed. This is based on trust and we will not check this.
Frequently Asked Questions
Please read this before you send an ask!
TIMELINE
July: Trope voting form released.
Late August: Prompt list is released for at least four weeks of preparation time. Tropes cannot be posted earlier than August 25th because of Moderator obligations in real life. (But, you know, go ahead and start writing/drawing, and add the themes in later, if you want!)
September: Do as much or as little on your works as you want. You can prepare everything in advance or let September go by with vibes and start working in October. Itâs up to you.
October 1st: Challenge begins! A storm of whump breaks upon us all! During this time, some posts will be reblogged to the whumptober archive blog. We open the yearly AO3 collection for posting (optional).
November 1st: The challenge is officially over! Completionist form opens for those who want to be included in the hall-of-fame.
Early November: We release completionist and participant badges, solicit feedback, and post a hall-of-fame list of completionists by the 10th.
PARTICIPATION AND COMPLETION
Q: What counts as participation?
Create or continue at least one work inspired by one of this yearâs prompts.
Q: What counts as completion?
Creating work(s) inspired by at least one prompt from each day (or alts), for a total of 31 unique prompts.
Q: Do I need to create 31 works?
No. You can, if you want. Or you can create one work that you add to every day with a new prompt. Or several works that combine prompts. You can also update an existing work by adding new material with the current prompts.
Q: Do I need to post my works somewhere to be a completionist or a participant?
No.
Q: How do you know I actually completed the challenge?
Weâll take your word for it!
Q: Do I have to finish my work(s) to be a completionist?
No, you can post WIPs. And youâre not obligated to finish them in October, but if you want it to count towards being a completionist, you must have completed 31 prompts by the end of the month. So for example, if youâre writing a long fic and you fit 31 different prompts into the writing you did in October, itâs okay if that fic isnât finished by the time October ends, youâll still be a completionist.
Q: Is co-writing/illustrating allowed?
Yes, absolutely, and it would count towards being a completionist for both/all of you.
Q: Is there a min/max limit on word count for written works?
No.
Q: Is there a min/max limit of quality for art?
No.
Q: Do I have to do something each day to be a completionist?
No. You can skip days whenever you want, and as long as 31 daily prompts (or alts) are in your works done in October, you can be a completionist. For example, if you wrote a 1000-word ficlet that covers prompts in days 2, 3, and 17, you can check all three days off your list even though itâs only one work.
Q: Is this challenge just for fics?
No! Artworks, GIFsets, headcannons, rec lists, poetry, moodboards, or any other creative work is encouraged.
Q: Can I combine Whumptober with other creation challenges?
Absolutely, as long as the other challenges allow it too.
PROMPTS
Q: How do the prompts work?
There are FOUR prompts per day: a theme and three ideas. You can use one, two, three, or all four prompts for each day. If you donât like any of the daily prompts, you can substitute one of the ALT prompts instead.
Q: How strictly/literally should we interpret the prompts?
As literally or as figuratively as you want. For example, if the theme is WATER, that could mean drowning, waterboarding, raining, swimming, take place underwater, be lost at sea, construct a metaphor about a characterâs mood that changes like a flowing river, crying, or whatever else you can think of that fits that theme.
Q: Can I combine prompts? Is there a limit on how many?
No limit and combine as many as youâd like. If you create a work that checks off multiple prompts, that work will count for a fill of multiple prompts. You need to address 31 different prompts to be an official completionist, but you donât have to produce 31 separate works.
WORKS
Q: Whatâs whump?
Hurting a character, whether thatâs physically, emotionally, intellectually, psychologically, or any other way you can think of. Comfort afterwards is optional. Angst is emotional whump, so it counts.
Q: How do I know if itâs whumpy enough?
If your character is just mildly inconvenienced, it probably needs more whump. However, no participant has to prove whumpiness to the mods. Whatever you write is up to you.
Q: What kind of characters can I create for?
Anything. Generic âwhumpee,â OC, PC, NPC, major characters, minor characters, or whatever you want. There are no limits.
Q: Does it have to take place in a specific fandom?
No, you can create works for your own worlds or for fandoms or for both. You can also create more generic or pan-fandom works. You can do cross-overs or use OCs, whatever you want.
Q: Can I create AI-created works?
We will not reblog or promote any works we know to be generative AI-created.
Q: Is there anything weâre not allowed to write?
As long as it contains whump and is based on our prompts, itâs fine. Please courtesy tag your works if you post them so people who follow the #whumptober2024 tag can filter according to their preferences.
Q: What about sex, minor characters, and potentially disturbing content?
You can create whatever works are legal in your country and post them accordingly. Please courtesy tag anything you think might be objectionable if you post to Tumblr so people who follow the #whumptober2024 tag can filter according to their preferences.
POSTING
Q: Where can I post my work?
Post where and how you want. You donât even have to (cross)post it to Tumblr. Just keep in mind if itâs not on Tumblr we will not be able to add it to the blog archive. There is an AO3 archive for Whumptober 2024, as well as the parent collection for works completed outside of the event.
Q: Can I start posting early?
You can, but this is an October event and wouldnât it be more fun with everyone doing it at the same time? We wonât be reblogging any work predating October 1st.
Q: Can I post late?
Yes. For the sake of our hardworking Post Fairies, only a dayâs themes will be reblogged to @whumptober-archive each day of October. But you can post whenever. Some of us are still working on and posting Whumptober fics from years ago.
Q: Do I have to use your tags?
Only on Tumblr and only if you want us to reblog your work on @whumptober-archive.
Q: How do I have my works reblogged to the archive?
Properly tagged posts will be reblogged to @whumptober-archive. If you want the official archive blog to reblog you, post on Tumblr and tag correctly (see this FAQ link for more info on tagging). Please note not all posts will be reblogged each day.
Q: Can we @ you?
For questions and comments, of course. Weâll be getting a flood of notifications, so if you really want us to see something send an ask.
Q: Can I cross post on other blogs?
Yes, multiple platforms and blogs are perfectly acceptable, as long as they allow cross-posting (to us). You can also post different works to different accounts under different names, without posting them everywhere at once. If you post some works under your main and others under an alt blog, thatâs fine for completionist purposes.
Q: Can I upload/repost my Whumptober content to other social media platforms?
Of course! Weâve created an AO3 Collection to archive any fics posted there, which can be found here. The blog is the official archive, so please respect the personal boundaries of any whumpers in your social circle (donât out anyone as a participant who would prefer not to be outed).
Most importantly, have fun, create, and enjoy all the whump posted this October!
Caretaker sitting behind a very weak and semiconscious whumpee, holding their limp body upright against their chest. To get food or medicine or water into them, or to help fight off a chest infection, or to provide some comfort and stability while a wound is stitched...I will never not love this image
âRee. Ree.â A pat on her left cheek. Sarasri snaps her head up. Noemi, kneeling on the other side of Moscas, retracts his arm from her face. His features are obscured in the dim light, but his eyes glint in the dark as he looks at her.
âWhat,â Sarasri croaks. Between them, Moscasâs back arches off the ground. Ah, he says, his head jerking to the side. Sarasri runs a hand through his hair, and he calms somewhat, turning toward her touch. She feels nauseous.
âRee, listen to me. We gotta get out of here. We canât keep holing up here likeââ Noemi gestures weakly to their surroundings, but his hand lingers when it moves over Moscas. ââthis.â The sound of the Leviathans tearing at the edges of Moscasâs labyrinth is a continuous, terrible backdrop to their conversation.Â
âUh,â Sarasri says. âYeah?â
Noemi powers on. It seems like he's been rehearsing this in his head for a while. "Moscas needs to go back to the Saint-ExupĂŠry. He's always a little forgetful after a fight, but this is different. The docs on board will be able to figure out wâ" Noemi swallows, brows knitted. "What's wrong with him."
Sarasri stares dumbly at Noemi. "Yeah. That's why we're waiting for backup to come, remember?"
Noemi returns her gaze steadily. "Backup's not coming."
It takes Sarasri too long to figure out what he means. But eventually, she does. "You'll die," she says.
This, finally, makes Noemi break eye contact. "...Yeah."
Sarasri looks away. Fiddles with the material of Moscas's cloak. She mumbles, "If youâre gonna die anyways, can't you just stay here 'til it happens?"
âNo,â Noemi says, simply, and continues. âIâll take the Wandering Regent. Moscas might be upset, but heâs so smart, heâll figure out another Engine in no time.â
âYouâre dumb as hell,â Sarasri bites out. âYouâve only just learned to Remodulateââ
âExactly. You and Moscas have been doing this for years. Youâre irreplaceable. You can just find some other schmuck to fill my role.â When Sarasri doesnât respond, Noemi lays his hand over hers. Through the contact, Sarasri can feel him trembling. âMoscas is the best of us. He has to survive.â
âOkay,â Sarasri says.
Noemi pauses. âOkay?â
âYeah. Okay. Do it. Iâll take care of the rest.â
âOh. Okay. Iââ Noemiâs shoulders slump in relief. âI thought youâdâno, it doesnât matter. Iâm glad you understand.â
âMm.â
He stumbles to his feet.Â
Sarasri watches him go.Â
--
âItâs almost time,â Noemi says. âJust a touch further, and theyâll sense us.â
âNo takesies backsies?â Sarasri jokes weakly, and gets a wry little laugh out of Noemi for her efforts.
âNo,â he says. Even through the comms, Sarasri can hear the shakiness of his sigh. âRemember, Newtonian propulsion only, for at least a thousand klicks. Iâll make as big of a distraction as I can, butââ
âYeah, yeah,â Sarasri says. âDonât go forgetting who taught you all that, now. Thatâs Moscasâs schtick.â
She knows she shouldn't have said it even as the words leave her mouth, and the silence on the other end of the line tells her the same. She shifts her hold on Moscas, and he nuzzles his face into her shoulder. Â
âEmiââ
âReeââÂ
âSorry, you firstââ
âNo, you goââ
They both stop. Sarasri bites her lip because sheâs not sure whether sheâd smile or cry if she lets go.Â
âI, uh, I just wanted to say thanks. And I love you. And Iâm sorry.â
âYeah,â Sarasri says. âIâyeah. That covers it.âÂ
Another tortuous minute passes, before Noemiâs voice returnsâstrong, unwavering, clinical. âIn position,â he says. "Ready on your signal."
âOkay,â Sarasri says. âGonna go dark now.â
â...Goodbye, Ree.âÂ
She turns off her comms. Turns around to face the grinning visage of her Engine.
Ready? the Barren Mother says, mouth unmoving.
The labyrinth shivers as Noemi unveils his Transcendence, and the Leviathans bay in fury as they streak towards him. âYeah. I really canât bring anyone back with me?â
The Motherâs voice is gleeful in her head. Even if you could, would you want him back like this?
Sarasri looks down at Moscas. He seems to be sleeping. She doesnât respond, but the Mother cackles anyways.Â
âFine. Letâs go.â She presses a gentle kiss to Moscasâs forehead. His eyelashes flutter prettily as she lowers him onto the palm of the Barren Motherâs hand. In front of her, the great, hewing jaw of the Engine cracks open, lamprey-teeth creaking to life as if strung on a rotating chain.
Sarasri lets her Transcendence wash over her. Her armor settles heavy on her shoulders, a comfort and a vice.Â
She keeps her eyes wide open as she steps forward, and allows herself to fall into the grinding dark.

Event Info & Rules
~ Please read our extensive event info posts before sending us an ask - A link can be found at the top of this post. ~
WHUMPTOBER is a month-long, prompt-based creation challenge (think: Inktober, but whumpier). There are 31 official themes this year - one for each day of the month - which can be used, skipped, or combined in any way youâd like. The 'theme' of each day is the line of lyrics.
The prompts are merely to serve as inspiration without being taken literally (e.g. you donât have to include the exact wording of prompts into your work). Feel free to run rampant on interpretation. For example, if the prompt is "flame", you could create something with reference to a candle/campfire, your character could have suffered a burn, or the flame could be related to the 'spark' of a relationship. It's truly up to you!
In total, there are 4 prompts for each day: there's lyrics, an object, a trope and a line of dialogue to choose from. We want to give everyone as much creative freedom as possible, as well as increase event accessibility for folks with triggers and squicks.
When uploading Whumptober content to your blog, be sure to tag the with:
#whumptober2023 âŚ..(the event tag)
#no.1, #no.2, #no.3, âŚ..(day number)
#lyric, #bruises, #stabbing,  âŚ..(the theme or specific prompt you chose)
#fandom or #OC, ⌠(ironman, originalcontent, oc âŚ)
#medium âŚ..(gifs, fic, podcast, art, etc.)
#teeth, #gore tw, #etc âŚ..(trigger warnings & any additional tags. Add "tw" AFTER the trigger/content warning. )
A form will be published at the beginning of November asking you to tell us if you completed the event. You do not need to post anything you have created, we rely on trust and we will not check this.
Questions not addressed in one of our many event info posts can be directed to this blog. We will not answer any questions that have been answered in the FAQs or rules already.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How does this yearâs prompt list work? What do I have to choose?
You can create something based on:
The overall theme/lyric of the day
Prompt 1, 2 or 3
One or several of the alternative prompts
A combination of the above
Q. Is [specific anything] allowed?
When in doubt: JUST DO IT!
Q. Do I have to do all 31 days?
Participate as much or little as you like! Just be sure to tag your posts properly (ex. #no.7, #radio silence). If you create works for 31 total theme days you will become a completionist. But apart from that, there are no repercussions if you donât fill prompts for each day.
Q. Can I post early/late?
Yes, you can post whenever you want. We will only reblog posts during October, but you can use our prompts all year round. The day you post will only affect your probability of being reblogged.
Q. Will you reblog my post?
Due to the sheer number of content posted during Whumptober we canât promise to reblog every single post. We will make a random selection trying to capture a wide variety of content. The following will increase your chances at being reblogged:
tag your post properly
post within 2-3 days of the theme you want to fill: if you fill the prompt for Day 1 your chances of being reblogged during October 1st to 3rd are highest and will go towards zero afterwards.
Q. What if I donât understand a prompt/theme?
Send us an ask! Weâre happy to help with wild, unhelpful clarifications or brainstorming. That being said, the themes are entirely up for interpretation. Donât take them too literally. For example: You can be choking on a cherry, someone else can choke you or you could be choked up on emotions, etc.
Q. What kind of content can I make? Can it be NSFW?
This is a MIXED MEDIA event! You can write fic, post meta, doodle or paint, create a gifset or photo edit, link a song, or get crafty with video - anything goes. As for NSFW, make what you like, we just hope that youâll tag your work accordingly so that others participating in the event can stay safe.
Q. Can I combine Whumptober with other creation challenges?
Absolutely, as long as the other challenges allow it too.
Q. Can I upload/repost my Whumptober content to other social media platforms?
Of course! You can post your own content wherever you like (or you can opt to not publish it at all). Additionally weâve created an AO3 Collection to archive any fics posted there. It can be accessed here. The tumblr blog @whumptober-archive is the official archive, so please respect the boundaries of any closeted whumpers in your social circle.
Q. Can I use prompts to write a new chapter for an existing fic?
Yes.
Q. An existing fic I am currently writing contains many of the Whumptober prompts, can I use it?
If you are actively writing this fic at the moment with the Whumptober prompts in mind, yes. If youâve previously posted something that checks the boxes, we ask that you not include it retroactively for this current year. You can, however, add new chapters relating to one or more of the prompts.
Q. What kind of characters can I write for?
Fandom characters, OC characters, human, furry, alien, cyborg, RPF, whoever you like. You can use the generic âwhumpeeâ character or have specific ones.
Q. Does it have to take place in a specific fandom?
No, you can create works for your own worlds or for fandoms or for both. You can also create more generic or pan-fandom works. You can do cross-overs or use OCs, whatever you want.
Q. Can I use a prompt multiple times?
Yes, but it only counts once towards being a completionist.
Q. If Iâm not comfortable with one dayâs prompts can I use a prompt of a different day as a substitute and still be a completionist?
No, you canât exchange prompts for different days. However, if all four prompts of a specific day make you uncomfortable, we have created an alternate prompts list that you can draw from. You can exchange any prompt with these, but please make sure not to use them twice.
Q. Where can I post my work?
Post where and how you want. You donât have to (cross)post it to Tumblr or at all. Just keep in mind if itâs not on Tumblr we will not be able to add it to the blog archive.
Q. Can I start posting early?
You can, but this is an October event and wouldnât it be more fun with everyone doing it at the same time? That being said, you can post early, but we wonât be reblogging any work predating October 1st.
Q. Do I have to finish a fic I started/can I post WIPâs?
Yes you can post WIPs. And youâre not obligated to finish it in October for it to count towards being a completionist. Â
Q. Is co-writing allowed?
Yes, absolutely, and it would count towards being a completionist for both/all of you.
Q. Do I have to create 31 standalone pieces to be considered a completionist or can I write one continuous story?
One continuous story is fine. Â The challenge is to write something for 31 prompts. If thatâs spread over 31 fics or just one, you are still considered a completionist. (The same goes for every other media you choose.)
Q. Is there a min/max limit on word count?
There is no limit.
Q. Can I combine prompts? Is there a limit on how many?
No limit and combine as many as youâd like.
Q. Is a hc/angst/emotional whump focus ok?
Of course! We are not going to establish a threshold for whumpiness. If you think itâs whumpy enough, then itâs whumpy enough. It can be physical, psychological, emotional, or any combination of the three.
Q. Whatâs considered nsfw?
See this post
Q. What is whump?
Typically the genre includes situations where a fictional character is hurt, be it emotionally, psychologically, or physically. Fanlore provides information here.
Q. My interpretation of the prompt isnât whumpy at all, does that count?
If you donât think your interpretation is whumpy, then it doesnât count for Whumptober. Remember that whump comes in many forms, though, and that we donât have a whump-checker or a threshold for how much whump needs to be included. If you think your interpretation contains enough whump to count, then it does.
Q. Can I start working on the prompts before October?
Absolutely! Thatâs why we post the prompts a month in advance. We recognise how difficult it can be creating for 31 days in âreal timeâ so feel free to start creating early!
Q. How do I tag triggers?
tw at the end of the word, ex. #gore tw
Q. Do I have to use your tags?
Yes, if you want your work archived on the blog. If not, feel free to use whatever tags you want.Â
Q. Does combining prompts count towards completion?
Yes
Q. Can we @ you?
Yes but we mostly rely on the #whumptober2023 tag.
Q. Is there anything we are absolutely not allowed to write?
There are no rules, but please make sure to properly tag your trigger warnings. And keep in mind Tumblrâs policies if you are posting it here (or the policies for whatever site you use).
Q. Where can I go for brainstorming help?
Here on Discord or come into our ask box.
Q. My characters are minors, is that ok?
Yes, but as with everything else, use clear and descriptive tags.
Q. Can I cross post on other blogs?
Yes, multiple platforms and blogs are perfectly acceptable. You can also post different works to different accounts under different names, without posting them everywhere at once.
Note: This is a creation challenge, please donât repost your old work under our tags (unless itâs been changed or edited for the event).
Hi friends, this year weâre opening up a âPrompt Voteâ in which weâd like to hear what tropes the community would like to see this Whumptober.
Within the form thereâs a list of over 200 tropes, and you can vote for as many or as few as youâd like. This is to give us an idea of different tropes' popularity in order to produce a prompt list catered to the community.
Did we miss a trope? Donât worry! Thereâs an âhonourable mentionsâ at the bottom where you can include any tropes you would like to be included.
Please Note: For brevity, some tropes have been listed under an umbrella term - otherwise this list would be over 260 items long! For example, tropes such as 'handcuffs, chains, ropes' are classed as 'restraints'. Similarly, the hurt/comfort trope has not been included, as it is more of a staple 'genre' of whump.
The vote will be open until the 24th of July
Hello! In order for us to create a prompts list catered to the whump community, we need some help! Please vote for your favourite tropes/any
big fan of when a character dies and one of the people closest to them is so undone by grief and guilt that they start hallucinating them still being alive and having full blown conversations with them, only for it to be suddenly revealed that they've been interacting and conversing with their corpse this entire time while it becomes rotten and putrid and unrecognizable to everyone else. the gothic romance of it all.
and when the other people around them realize what's up and get soooooo mad about it like oh my god that's messed up that's not healthy you need to stop you need help... don't listen to them girl keep holding onto that bloated disintegrating corpse with a white knuckled grip until they have to physically tear you away from its side and you come away with handfuls of cloth and hair and fragments of bone clutched in your fists and the spaces between your teeth
CW: Large rough scary caretaker, blood, begging, panic, broken ribs, forcefully carried, biting, rescuing a terrified reluctant whumpee
âI-Itâs⌠Itâs go-gon- ah be ok-ayâŚâ Whumpee mumbled to themselves, curled into the corner while tapping their fingertips on the crumbly stone walls. They took a shuttered shallow breath, but anything more than that shot pain through their wounded body.
Their once-favorite shirt was now painted red in blood, leaving dripping blots everywhere they went. They started to feel light headed as they forced themselves to take a deep breath, only for it to turn into a sobbing grunt in pain.Â
They collapsed their head against the wall, exhausted, hungry, scared. The rusted door screeched open as they stuffed themselves further into the corner, pressing against their broken ribs. âAah-! P-please no! Ple-eease!â Whumpee begged, covering their head and ears so they didnât have to hear the cruel laughter or *snap* of the rod.Â
But they couldnât hear anything. Either they did a good job blocking everything out, or there really was pure silence. They dared a peak as they cracked an eye open, taking a subtle glance expecting to find Whumper.
âŚBut it was something else. Something much, much worse. The color drained their face, their blood froze, they practically stopped breathing. A large figure, built with muscle and height crouched over them, watching them, studying them. They were covered in blood more than Whumpee was, but it wasnât their own. They didnât have a single scratch aside from some old scars, one even straight down their eye.Â

Horrified whumpee cradling the body of a dead friend/lover for hours after their death, refusing to let anybody else near. They might have to be dragged away from the corpse, even sedated.
Boy thereâs so many asks that sound like some of my characters and this one-
This one fits a character of mine too-
For a while after being dragged away, the whumpee refuses to believe that their friend/lover is actually dead, they just completely shut down.
The whumpee had survived the whumperâs torture for so long with their friend/lover, but in the end they were the only person to make it out alive.
The worst part is that they had died in their arms- the whumpee watched them die right in front of them and they were able to do nothing about it.
