Recently Cosmo posted an advice post on “breast pain”. Which is by all means important. BUTTT. And this is a huge thing for me, they mentioned HS, or Hidradenitis Supprativa. As many don’t know what it is. Please feel free to ask me questions or look it up. But be warned it’s graphic.
Anyway, in this article, Cosmo suggested that HS is just a pimple and can be cured with antibiotics. This is a load of bull. Anyone with HS knows this. HS is life altering. It changes your very being, your social life and skills, your ability to have a relationship. It’s countless surgeries, and pain meds, and doctors appointments, antibiotics prescribed by the ignorant, stomach issues that stem from the medication, PTSD, depression, anxiety, disability and hating yourself, feeling useless, worthlessness, sleepless nights full of crying, wondering if you’ll ever be better or will you die? HS is life threatening. You get an infection and you become septic? Have cellulitis? Get a blood disease from it? You get a cold and it turns into something else that lands you in the ER. You run low grade fevers constantly so when you are really sick… You don’t know until it’s almost too late. Don’t tell me about my disease when you couldn’t be bothered to educate yourself properly. I have watched the effect this disease has had on my friends and family. The way it kills a person in every aspect. I have said goodbye to many who died be it from the HS itself or suicide from not being able to live with the pain, and ignorance. You don’t know the path we walk. You haven’t felt the loneliness and the hopelessness. You have enraged and hurt so many by your sheer ignorance on a disease that has changed and hurt us in so many ways. Be glad you don’t know. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. But educate yourselves. Ask an HSer what it’s like to live with this EVERY DAY. To work a 40 hour week in pain, to be a mother, a father, a sister, a brother…What it feels like to feel like a failure and a burden to those you love most. I speak from personal experience. I have had this disease ten years. Countless medications, playing Guinea Pig, three surgeries…One having failed.
