he knows this too won't be enough. not to get what he really wants. so it will have to be. his teeth are clenched in his head so he doesn't bite into the stitches throbbing on the inside of his cheek. the only way to make vernon look at him had been to spit blood onto his shoes. he's back to this. those cold eyes and link cannot even look into them. his hands are clawing at his counterpart. link imagines he's already dead. a corpse beneath his fingers so he doesn't have to see a human being there.
his gaze is sharp and slitted in rage. it's his own but the part calls for it. he's grateful as he should be. if it weren't for vernon he'd still be sleeping on a mattress on the floor of a trailer. he'd be his father's son. a punching bag for drunken rage. he left it all in that little town. hollowed it out of his chest and left it on state lines. link is not him anymore.
the silence blankets him and he tries to breathe as quietly as he can. what's wrong now? what part of him is not good enough? link doesn't move from his spot. mouth a tight line. eyes empty. his gaze is fixed on the imagined eyes of everyone who said he'd never be anything. hundreds of them. he doesn't move a muscle when he hears foot steps coming closer. he's displeased again.
if he's not doing what the other needs what is he at all? link will never know. he doesn't want to know. and the threat of being replaced is always in the background. not nearly far enough away. vernon always reminds him. link knows what he is good for. he knows why he's here. link's worried about the sheen he can feel on his skin. golden and glittering in the hot lights. how is he supposed to stop this? why can't he just do what is needed of him?
vernon's words cut into him like a blade. he's always doing it isn't he? he can't ever just fucking do what vernon wants. and he feels one of the sutures starts to seep and he swallows it down. it's hard not to dig his tongue into the threads. he wants to show vernon. wants the other man to see how link bleeds for him like it might change something. anything. link's offered himself up to him and still it wasn't enough. all he has left is his spite. if he can't be good enough to please him then he will spite him. defy him silently with his performance.
the brush of vernon's fingers make his throat constrict. it feels like everything he wants to say is clogged there. and he's looking right at him and link wants to close his eyes. shield himself from the gaze of a man who he will never get to touch. link doesn't close his eyes. "i'm right here."
it's more then the physical. they both know that. link's always been vying for the older mans attention even when he's known it to be hopeless. he knows he will only ever receive a quick correction or long drawn out explanation of what is needed of him. link breathes out softly and tries to mask the shakiness. this has to be enough, it's all he's ever going to get from him.
he swallows down the ache and nods once. gathers himself like he always has to whenever vernon looks him in the eye. speaks just to him. he can be perfect. he can have a heart. he can put everything he's thrown away back into his chest. and that tone is back in vernon's voice and link straightens out his shoulders and nods. he does understand. he can be exactly what the other needs. exactly what an audience wants to see in their hero.
the history of a hundred heros is the only thing he thinks about when his hands find his counterpart. it would feel good to take his anger out on him. if vernon can't love him he will hurt someone else. it has to be enough. it's all link will ever hold between his hands of the other man.
the monitors are liars. they smooth out the sweat and turn the desperate, jagged edge of a human soul into something marketable, something that can be downloaded for twenty-nine dollars a month. but standing here, in the oppressive, humid center of the stage, the lie doesn't hold.
vernon felt the heat of the lamps pressing against the back of his neck, a physical manifestation of the pressure he lived under, but it was nothing compared to the heat coming off link. up close, the boy, the man was a tectonic plate of tension, ready to snap and take the whole studio down with them. when link spoke, those three words i’m right here. they didn’t just hang in the air, they punctured the professional bubble vernon had spent years inflating.
it was a challenge. it was a plea. it was a goddamn tragedy.
vernon didn’t pull his hand away immediately from link’s collar. he let his thumb linger for a fraction of a second too long against the pulse point of that throat. he felt the racing rhythm, the frantic, bird-like thrum of a heart that vernon had helped break. he knew link thought they were being replaced, or that they were failing, or that vernon’s coldness was a sign of disgust. link didn't realize that the coldness was the only thing keeping vernon from falling to his knees and begging for forgiveness for ever putting a camera between them.
“ then stay right here, ” vernon replied, his voice a low, rough grate that felt like it was tearing out of his own chest. “ don't let me look at the screen and see a ghost, link. i don't pay ghosts. ”
it was a lie. a corporate, shitty lie to cover the fact that seeing link hollowed out made vernon want to burn the building to the ground.
he stepped back into the darkness of the editing room the area behind the monitors where he could pretend to be a god instead of a man. every step away felt like a betrayal. he sat back in the chair, the leather creaking under his weight, and felt the eyes of the crew on him. they were waiting for the tyrant. they were waiting for the man who demanded perfection and didn't care about the cost.
he didn't give them the satisfaction of seeing his hands shake. he shoved them into the pockets of his jacket, his fingernails digging into his palms.
roll camera, he commanded, the authority returning to his tone like a reflex. scene forty-two, take four. action.
on the monitor, the scene unfolded with a new, terrifying energy. link was no longer just a machine ; they were a live wire. when they grabbed their scene partner, there was a raw, visceral desperation in the movement that made the script irrelevant. it wasn't just sex, and it wasn't just performance. it was a man trying to claw their way out of their own skin.
vernon watched, his breath hitching in his throat. he saw the way link’s eyes flickered toward the camera for a split second, not a technical error, but a targeted strike. link wasn't looking at the lens ; they were looking through it. they were looking at vernon.
see me, the look said. see what you’ve made. see what i’m doing for you.
vernon felt a sickening mixture of pride and self-loathing. he had discovered link in that bar, yes. he had given them a career, a name, a bank account. but in doing so, he had turned their relationship into a transaction. he had placed himself in a position where he was the one holding the leash, and link was the one performing for the scrap of affection vernon allowed himself to show through a critique of their eyeline or form.
the scene reached its peak, and vernon didn't look away. he couldn't. he watched the way link’s body arched, the way their muscles corded under the gold-slicked skin, and he felt a phantom ache in his own arms. he wanted to be the one link was holding. he wanted to be the one link was angry at, or crying over, or laughing with in a world where the record light wasn't red.
but the light was red. it was always red.
cut, vernon said, though his voice lacked its usual bite. he cleared his throat, trying to regain his footing. print that. we’re moving on to the close-ups.
he didn't get up to congratulate link. he didn't offer a towel or a glass of water. he just stayed in the shadows, a silhouette in a high-backed chair, watching the PAs swarm the set. he watched Link break character, the way his shoulders slumped the moment the action was over, the way they looked suddenly small under the vast, artificial sky of the soundstage.
vernon picked up his pen and made a note on his clipboard, his handwriting a jagged mess.
masterpiece, he wrote. then he crossed it out until the paper tore.
he knew what link wanted. he knew link was vying for a word, a touch, a sign that the man behind the director’s monitor still existed. and vernon wanted to give it to them. he wanted to walk over there, throw his jacket over link’s shoulders, and drive them away from this place, away from the cameras and the contracts and the shared silence that was killing them both.
but he didn't. he couldn't. because if he became a man, he would lose the director. and if he lost the director, he couldn't protect link from the industry that would chew them up and spit them out the moment they stopped being perfect.
this was the only way vernon knew how to love them : by being the monster that kept the other monsters away.
“ five minutes ! ” vernon barked, his voice echoing through the rafters. “ link, get your touch-ups. you’re sweating through the base. let’s make it look like it doesn't hurt, okay ? that’s what they’re paying for. ”
he looked down at the monitor again, staring at the frozen frame of link’s face. the eyes were wide, beautiful, and utterly shattered.
i’m sorry, vernon whispered, so low that even the boom mic wouldn't have caught it.
he hit the playback button, and watched the crash happen all over again.
The amber liquid was no longer a guest in Ivan’s glass; it had become the conductor of his heartbeat. With every measured tilt of his wrist, the sharp burn of the spirit smoothed the jagged edges of his thoughts, yet it cruelly eroded the very defenses he prided himself on.
No one in the realm inched closer to the precipice of madness than the Lord sitting across from him. Crazy. Insane. Delusional. The words echoed in Ivan’s mind, a rhythmic chant keeping time with the pulse in his temples. What did Kaegan mean, that this farce would suit them? Two men, bound by ink and desperation, standing before an altar to recite vows meant for lovers, all to maintain the integrity of a theatrical lie.
As the alcohol bloomed in his chest, Ivan’s imagination betrayed him. For a fleeting, sickening second, he saw it: the candlelight reflecting in Kaegan’s eyes, the weight of the ceremonial robes, the ghost of a touch as their lips met to seal a hollow pact. It was a vision born of rot and fermented grain.
He watched Kaegan, noting the infuriating stillness of the man. Does he not have a lover? Ivan wondered, his grip tightening ever so slightly on the crystal stem. Does he not ache for someone who isn't a political necessity?
"I might even agree with you on the robes," When he heard the murmur and the chuckle - Those sound were like a blade dragged over his heavy robe; it sent a violent shiver down Ivan’s spine. To mask the tremor, Ivan turned his head with practiced, aristocratic grace, as if merely admiring the tapestry on the wall. He took another sip. Then another. The edge he usually used to cut others was dulling, leaving him feeling exposed in his own skin. He had intended to bait Kaegan, to drive him to a point of fractured composure, but the Lord navigated the thorns of their conversation with a grace that left Ivan feeling like a clumsy child.
Ivan was tired. He was annoyed. But more than that, he was haunted. When Kaegan spoke of loneliness, a small, treacherous part of Ivan’s mind finally acknowledged the truth: the man before him was not a statue. He was flesh and blood, prone to the same gravity that was currently pulling Ivan into the depths of his own glass.
For a moment, the bitterness in Ivan's throat wasn't from the wine. If only, he thought, his gaze momentarily softening as it traced the line of Kaegan’s jaw. If only we had met in a garden without gates. If only our names didn't carry the weight of empires. Would I still want to break you, or would I simply want to know you?
He shook the thought away, the movement fluid and mask-like. He could not afford sympathy. Not when his pride was the only thing keeping his spine straight.
"Forever is a sweeter promise, don't you think so, milord?" Ivan asked, his tone impeccably light, though his eyes were beginning to glaze with a soft, dangerous heat. "It provides such a lovely illusion. If the servants are listening, let them tell the world how we spoke of eternity. It’s much more romantic than the truth." he dropped a tone lower.
He paused, tilting his head with a mockingly thoughtful expression. "Or should I step onto the cold ground of reality for us both and assign a number? Shall we say… two winters? Or perhaps fifty, if we find we have a taste for the theatrics?"
He took a final, unceremonious swig, the heat of it flushing his cheeks a delicate, bruised pink. He knew he should stop. He should be the perfect host, the charming consort-to-be. But the room was tilting, and Kaegan’s presence was becoming an overwhelming sun he couldn't stop staring at.
"Would you provide me an exit, milord?" Ivan asked suddenly. The smoothness remained, but the pitch had dropped into something somber, almost aching. He kept his eyes fixed on the dregs of his drink, unable to meet the other man’s stare. "Will you provide the means to depart if the 'forever' begins to hurt? When I realize I can never be the ghost you’ve dreamt of?"
He set the glass down with a soft clink that sounded like a funeral bell. A divorce in this age? Surely it would go down in a scandal.
"Will you require compensation for my disappearance, milord? If so… I suggest you name the price now, while I still have the mind to pay it."
kaegan didn’t flinch at the mention of a price. he didn’t even blink. he simply watched the way the chandelier light fractured against the dregs in ivan’s glass, thinking of how easily crystal shattered and how much harder it was to mend. the flush on ivan’s cheeks that delicate, bruised pink spoke of a man who was fighting a war on two fronts : one against the world outside these walls, and one against the sudden, terrifying softening of his own resolve.
for a long moment, the only sound in the hall was the rhythmic popping of the hearth fire and the distant, muffled footsteps of a servant in the corridor. kaegan let the silence stretch. he knew that for a man like ivan, silence was often more threatening than an insult ; it offered no purchase, no jagged edge to grab onto and throw back.
“ you speak of yourself as a debt to be settled, ivan, ” kaegan said, his voice dropping into a register that was less like a nobleman and more like a confession. “ as if you are a leased property or a restless ghost that i have somehow summoned into my service. it is a tragedy, i think, that you have been taught to see your own presence as a burden for which you must apologize. ”
he set his own glass down, moving with a slow, deliberate care that signaled he was entirely present, entirely sober, and entirely focused on the man across from him. he didn't lean back into the safety of his status ; instead, he rested his forearms on the table, closing the distance between them just enough to acknowledge the intimacy of ivan's question.
“ you ask for an exit, ” kaegan repeated, the words soft but firm. “ you ask if i will provide the means to depart when the forever begins to hurt. it is a fair question. a wise one, even, considering the cages we both were born into. ”
he paused, his eyes searching ivan’s face with a quiet, unwavering empathy that refused to be provoked. “ the exit is already there, ivan. it has been there since the moment i signed my name to the contract. i do not keep my doors locked. i do not chain my gates. if the day comes when the weight of my name or the sound of my voice becomes a cage you can no longer endure, i will not ask for compensation. i will not demand a refund of the political capital spent or the gold promised to your house. ”
kaegan reached out, his hand hovering for a fraction of a second over the table not touching ivan, but offering a bridge if the other man chose to take it.
“ my family is powerful, yes. we have been the architects of valelyeon’s history for centuries. but i have seen what happens when you try to build a home out of rubble and resentment. it collapses. usually, it collapses on the person who tried to hold it up with their bare hands. ” he gave a small, sad shake of his head. “ i have no interest in being the ceiling that falls on you. if you leave, you leave with my blessing, my protection, and my silence. that is my word as a nobleman. you will owe me nothing but the memory of a man who tried, however clumsily, to be your friend. ”
he saw the way ivan’s eyes glazed with that dangerous, alcoholic heat, the way they looked at kaegan as if he were a sun too bright to behold. it tugged at something deep in kaegan’s chest, a protectiveness that wasn't born of duty, but of a profound recognition of a kindred spirit. they were both victims of their own lineages, two pieces of a puzzle forced together by hands that didn't care if the edges frayed.
“ as for being the ghost i’ve dreamt of… ” kaegan’s lips quirked into a ghost of a smile, one that reached his eyes this time. “ i don’t dream of ghosts, ivan. i’ve spent my life surrounded by them ancestors in oil paintings, legacies that demand i be something i am not. i have no need for a haunting. i told you before : i want you exactly as you are. even this. especially this. ”
he gestured vaguely to the room, to the empty glass, to the vitriol that had finally begun to exhaust itself.
“ you worry about the scandal of a divorce ? in this age, a scandal is merely a story the commoners tell to pass the winter. my family has survived wars, coups, and plagues ; we can survive a husband who prefers the tree line to the ballroom. but i suspect… ” he leaned in just a fraction more, his gaze dropping to ivan’s mouth for a heartbeat before returning to their eyes. “ i suspect that the forever you fear isn't the one dictated by the law. it’s the one that happens when the theater ends and you realize there is no one left to fight but yourself. ”
kaegan stood up then, the movement fluid and silent. he didn't tower over ivan : he simply offered a change in perspective. he reached for the decanter, not to pour more for himself, but to gently move it out of ivan’s immediate reach, a subtle gesture of care that carried no judgment.
“ the first snow is still weeks away, ” kaegan said, his voice a warm anchor in the cold room. “ until then, you are my guest, not my prisoner. and after that… you will be my husband, which in my house means you are the only person in the world i am truly beholden to. sleep, ivan. the world is less jagged when the sun is up, and i promise you, i will still be the same delusional man in the morning. i am remarkably consistent in my madness. ”
he turned to leave, but stopped at the edge of the shadows, looking back over his shoulder.
“ and for the record ? i don’t think you’re a ghost. ghosts don't have eyes that burn like yours. they don't have the courage to ask for an exit before they’ve even walked through the door. you’re the most alive thing in this entire kingdom, and i would be a fool to let that fade into compensation and numbers. ”
with a final, respectful nod, kaegan stepped into the hallway, leaving the door slightly ajar, a silent promise that the exit was, and would always be, theirs to choose.

( °.🐚⋆❀˖°🫧 ). Raven swallowed softly, Brain silently taking in the affectionate words from his boyfriend as he looked at him. sᴄᴀʀᴇᴅ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ʜᴇ ᴡᴀs ʟᴇᴛᴛɪɴɢ ᴊᴜɴɢᴡᴏᴏ ᴅᴏᴡɴ, his brain always liked to refuse to let him accept the words — even if the truth was obviously there in jungwoo’s words. Swallowing as jungwoo’s grip on his hand got firmer, his skin warm against his own. ❛ I believe you.. I won’t let my brain keep doing this to mee.. ❜ knowing that his boyfriend had nothing but good intentions made his heart flutter , considering their past that was quite …. ᴅᴀɴɢᴇʀᴏᴜs. But his heart rate couldn’t help but increase, Raven’s tongue darted out to lick his own lips cautiously.
It was what he did to keep himself from letting the thoughts get the best of him.. gasping softly — the way Jungwoo remained so gentle with him. ʜᴀɴᴅ ʀᴀɪsɪɴɢ ᴛᴏ ʜɪs ᴄʜᴇᴇᴋ, eyes softening more, out of instinct ; but he couldn’t hold back his golden eyes from reflecting off the light shining in the room from the sun. ❛ Jungwoo.. you — you really love me; even if my brain.. refuses to let me listen to your words? ❜ He asked shyly, voice filling with desperation — scared he’d be abandoned again ; like his past relationship.
Raven felt his heart flutter as the man thanked him for trying, ɴᴏᴛ ᴡʜᴀᴛ ʜᴇ ʜᴀᴅ ᴇxᴘᴇᴄᴛᴇᴅ, but it sure did have an affect on him — heart going crazy in his chest, pounding loudly — there was no doubt that it wasn’t heard. His throat bobbed as he tried to think of words.. a way to respond to the thanks.. ❛ I try.. for you, even — even if.. it’s not the best.. ❜ he let out a light whine : finding it awfully hard to hide the emotion in his voice.
Gasping softly, he was being vulnerable and he knew that Jungwoo would comfort him but being this way always made him nervous ; scared that his emotions would be rejected. ( ᴇᴠᴇɴ ᴡʜᴇɴ ʜᴇ ᴋɴᴇᴡ ɪᴛ ᴡᴏᴜʟᴅɴ'ᴛ ʜᴀᴘᴘᴇɴ. )
the light whine that escaped raven’s throat pulled at jungwoo’s heartstrings, a sound so raw and honest it made him want to fold the other man into themself and never let the world touch them again. he didn't pull back when he felt raven’s hand rise to his cheek instead, he leaned into the touch, closing his eyes for a brief second to savor the weight of that palm against his skin. it was a rare, precious thing, raven initiating that connection and jungwoo treated it with the same quiet awe he’d give a miracle.
when those golden eyes searched his, shimmering with a desperation that spoke of old scars and ghosts jungwoo wished he could fight on their behalf, jungwoo’s expression didn't flicker with frustration. there was no impatience, no i’ve already told you this. there was only a profound, grounded warmth.
“ raven, ” he said, his voice dropping an octave, rich with a sincerity that anchored the air between them. he didn't just say the words ; he exhaled them, making sure they carried the full weight of his devotion. “ i don’t love you despite the noise in your head. i love all of you. every single part, including the parts that are scared, and the parts that find it hard to believe me. your brain is just trying to protect you, i know that. but it's okay to let me take the shift for a while. you don't have to fight it alone. ”
he shifted his hand, the one still laced with raven’s, and brought it back down to rest over raven’s heart, feeling that frantic, tell-tale thrumming. he applied a steady, grounding pressure there, as if he could manually calm the rhythm through sheer will.
“ and you say you try, even if it’s not the best ? ” jungwoo let out a soft, melodic chuckle, one filled with genuine endearment. he shook his head slowly, his nose brushing against raven's in the process. “ you trying is more than enough for me. every time you choose to stay, every time you let me in like this... that’s the best thing i could ever ask for. you aren't a project to fix, raven. you’re the man i love. and i'm not going anywhere, no matter how loud the noise gets. i promise. ”
he lingered there, his breath warm against raven’s lips, waiting, watching, and making sure his boyfriend knew that in this moment and every moment following they were safe, they were seen, and they were profoundly cherished.
the muscles of his jaws turned firm at junghwan's words of the picture his father painted of him, focused on stroking apollo's nose instead of opening his mouth in response of the words. he hated how those words didn't paint one true of his true self, unsure on how much longer he'll be able to keep it up.
midnight chuffed in her stall and the young prince had made up his mind on who to ride as he grabbed the saddle, making his way over to dark horse, eyes sharp of her actions but so far she's giving him good reactions, especially to him holding the saddle. "that's a good girl, yeah these guys don't understand you, don't they?" he chuckled as he opened the half door and stepped into her stall. "such a gorgeous beauty." he exhaled in adoration as he ran his hand along her neck. "can i ride you?"
lancelot took his time saddling midnight and he lead her out of the barn with the horse not at resisting him, his lips curling up into a bright grin. "alright baby girl, let's go ride." lancelot crooned to the horse, stroking her nose and pulled himself on the saddle, patting her neck affectionately with another delighted laugh.
the prince knight curled his fingers around the reins and clicked his tongue to get her moving which she did easily to his excitement. "let's go, shall we?" he asked as he slowed down to stop next to junghwan with a smirk on his lips, eyes twinkling with happiness now he's on a horse and much more content. "normally i'd be leaving you in dust except i don't know where i am going."
lancelot chuckled when midnight made an agreeing snort to his response and looked back at junghwan, taking in the sight of the other prince. it's nature to appreciate a gorgeous view, even though it spits venom.
junghwan’s heart did a slow, treacherous roll in his chest as lancelot emerged from the dim light of the barn, not atop the steady, predictable apollo, but guiding the midnight-coated demon with a terrifying sort of grace. he watched, momentarily paralyzed, as lancelot swung themselves into the saddle. midnight, a horse that had once sent a seasoned stable master to the infirmary with a shattered ribs, merely tossed her head and stepped into line as if she were a common pony.
the sight was… infuriating. it was supposed to be a polished prince from a land of silk and soft poetry who arrived at their gates. junghwan had prepared himself for a man who would complain about the dust, who would recoil at the smell of manure, and who would surely fall off anything with more spirit than a rocking horse. he had built a fortress of resentment around that image, a way to protect himself from the fact that this man was destined for his brother, the perfect match for the perfect heir.
but lancelot, with their windswept hair and the easy, crooked smirk they wore while whispering sweet nonsense to a killer mare, was breaking every defense junghwan possessed.
“ you’re an idiot, ” junghwan snapped, though the words lacked their usual venom, sounding more like a breathless observation. he adjusted his grip on his own reins, his knuckles white. “ that horse is going to realize you’re a stranger halfway up the ridge and decide your head looks better as a hoof-print. don’t expect me to stop and scrape you up. ”
he kicked his mount into a walk, heading toward the narrow, rocky trail that climbed toward the valley’s edge. he could feel lancelot’s presence behind him, the rhythmic thud of midnight’s hooves, the soft creak of leather, and that low, melodic chuckle that seemed to vibrate right through the air and settle under junghwan’s skin.
leaving me in the dust ? junghwan repeated, glancing back over his shoulder. the sun was hitting lancelot just right, catching the gold in their eyes and the smudge of dirt on their cheek. it was a rugged, earthy beauty that junghwan found himself hating for a completely different reason now. “ bold words for someone who hasn’t even seen the incline yet. these trails aren't your manicured garden paths. ”
as they hit the base of the ridge, junghwan gave his horse its head, leaning forward into a gallop. he wanted to outrun the feeling in his chest the sharp, stinging realization that the porcelain doll their father described didn't exist. instead, there was this man : a storm of competence and kindness that made junghwan feel suddenly, painfully small.
he heard the thunder of midnight’s hooves gaining on him. lancelot wasn’t just keeping up ; they were riding with a feral sort of joy, their body moving in perfect synchronicity with the mare.
my brother likes his flowers delicate, junghwan thought bitterly, his jaw tightening as he reached the first plateau and pulled his horse to a sharp halt. he looked back at lancelot, who pulled up beside him, breathless and glowing with adrenaline.
for a moment, the resentment flickered and died, replaced by a heat so intense it made junghwan’s throat go dry. he looked at lancelot really looked at them and felt the terrifying weight of a new truth. his brother didn't deserve this man. his brother wouldn't know what to do with a fire like this, they’d even try to put it out.
“ the valley, ” junghwan said hoarsely, gesturing to the sprawling green below to hide the way his hands were shaking. “ look at it while you can. because once you’re inside those palace walls, prince lancelot, nobody is going to let you ride a horse like her ever again. ”
he turned his gaze away, fighting the urge to reach out and wipe that smudge of dirt off lancelot's face himself. he had spent years hating a ghost, only to realize the living man was going to be his undoing.
link registers the mere second vernon looks at him again. sees him. he's always relished in being beneath his gaze. even if he's angry. even if link is not being good enough. this has to be enough otherwise he might explode within his skin. and his face is throbbing but link has only ever known pain like this. whether the fist of his father or his own anger driving him towards destruction or worse still the love of a man who could never see you. never wanted to.
and he straightens his shoulders and doesn't look at his counterpart because if he does he might kill him. might wrap his hands around his throat and squeeze until he stops breathing in front of everybody. so he doesn't. he swallows it all down. link can be good. vernon had seen it in him years ago when link hardly knew himself at all. he owes him.
link does not answer vernon because there was no question and he does not want to argue. link does not know what's worse; vernon's rage or his indifference. link's skin feels tight either way. when vernon's gaze rakes over him link knows that he knows. he knows the other man can see everything on him that he is trying to hide right now. he could never hide it from him. link had always wanted vernon to see him. he never had but link could still wonder. he could still wish for something unobtainable. hadn't that been his entire life?
he feels sick but he keeps the mask up. and he knows he just has to get through this scene. he knows his body can do it, so he can do it. and vernon's coming closer again so link just watches. he waits for his cue to speak or not. the defiance from earlier has all but burned away with the dwindling adrenaline. vernon reads him like a book and link can only stare back. what is there to say? vernon already knows it all. everything link could ever say as defense vernon has already heard. sometimes he thinks the other man can hear the thoughts in his head. so he always makes sure to think about how much he wants to be wanted by him.
"you know." link says instead of anything else. because vernon knows everything there is and ever will be to know about him. then his hand raises and hovers by his cheek like he might touch him. a crease between his brows is there for only a second. a flash. it was gone in the next. but vernon's mask is back on and link mirrors it. he can be good.
masterpieces don't bleed on the floorboards. link thinks that somewhere the other must love him.
and link will go out into the parking lot later and he'll wait for him. he'll drive his fist into his cheek. into his teeth. until link is satisfied he's hurt how he does. how he is.
he knows he can get through this. it's not hard. every line is memorized, every motion practiced to perfection. link driving himself into the ground everyday for this moment. link doesn't answer vernon with any words. there'd never be the right ones. never enough. he just nods at the question once. brief. curt. he knows what is needed of him. vernon doesn't need a stray dog. he doesn't need a speck of blood. he needs perfection and link will deliver it at his feet. the ones he'd bloodied. the ones he worships.
link could be good. the mask doesn't slip this time.
and his head feels hollowed out. void of any emotions. he's in position and he knows the cue. when their bodies collide he does not bite down this time. he is being good.
the monitor was a cruel mirror. it didn't just capture light, it captured the architecture of a slow-motion car crash. vernon sat back in the chair, his spine stiff against the cheap leather, watching link move through the playback of the previous take. the boy, he was still a boy to vernon, despite the years and the scars had a way of looking at the camera that made the audience feel like they were the ones being discovered, not the other way around.
but behind the monitor, in the living, breathing silence of the soundstage, vernon felt the weight of the air change again. link was being good. it was a terrifying brand of obedience, the kind that came from a man who had decided to turn himself into a machine because being human was costing too much.
vernon signaled for the playback to cut. he didn't look at the crew. he didn't need to. they were extensions of his own will, and right now, his will was focused entirely on the man standing under the hot, artificial moon. link was perfect. they was holding the mark, their breathing shallow and controlled, their eyes fixed on some point in the middle distance that vernon knew didn't exist. it was the professional mask vernon had demanded, and yet, seeing it now, it felt like a serrated blade across his own throat.
“ hold, ” vernon said into the intercom, his voice a low rasp that shouldn't have carried, but did.
he stood up and walked toward the set. the lights were blinding up close, the heat of the lamps radiating like a fever. as he stepped into the light, vernon felt the familiar, dull ache in his chest, the one he’d spent the better part of a decade pretending was just bad digestion or a lack of sleep. it was neither. it was the persistent, nagging ghost of a version of himself that hadn't been hardened by the industry, a man who might have reached out to link in that bar years ago and offered a hand instead of a contract.
he stopped two feet from link. up close, the concealer was doing its job, but vernon could see the slight tremor in link’s jaw. the boy was vibrating with the effort of not falling apart.
“ you're doing it again, ” vernon said, his voice dropping so low it was almost a caress, though the words were sharp. “ you're giving me exactly what i asked for, and you're doing it to spite me. ”
he wanted to reach out. he wanted to take link’s face in his hands but not to inspect the makeup, not to check the stitches, but to feel the heat of them, to confirm they were still there beneath the performance. he wanted to tell them that the parking lot didn't have to happen. that they didn't have to break themselves against the world just to prove they were still alive.
instead, vernon adjusted the collar of link’s shirt, his fingers brushing against the pulse point in link’s neck. it was racing.
“ you think i want you to be a statue, ” vernon whispered, his eyes searching link’s, looking for the man behind the glassiness. “ i don't. i want you to be here. don't hollow yourself out for this. don't give them that much. ”
for a second, the director’s mask flickered. the overtly serious man who took no shits was replaced by someone who looked tired profoundly, soul-deep tired. vernon saw the way link looked at him, that desperate, unsaid hunger for something that wasn't a cue or a critique. it was a mirror of his own hunger, a shared starvation they’d both agreed to never name.
to acknowledge it was to lose everything. if vernon loved them, he couldn't direct them. if he held them, he couldn't protect them from the very machine he operated. it was a sick, circular logic, but it was the only one that kept them both paid and alive.
“ you're a masterpiece, link, ” vernon said, repeating the word like a prayer or a curse. “ but even a masterpiece needs a heart. don't leave yours in the dressing room. ”
he stepped back, the coldness returning to his features as if he’d just flipped a switch. he couldn't afford the luxury of being human for more than a few seconds at a time. the clock was ticking, the money was burning, and the crew was watching.
“ reset to the top of the beat, ” vernon barked, his voice returning to its authoritative boom. “ link, watch your eyeline on the turn. i want to see the moment you decide to give in. not because you have to, but because you want to. do you understand ? ”
he saw link nod that brief, curt acknowledgement. the spark was back, but it was different now. it wasn't just defiance ; it was something heavier, something weighted with the shared secret they’d just exchanged in the shadows of the lights.
vernon walked back to his chair, his hands shoved deep into his pockets so no one could see them shaking. he sat down and stared at the monitor, watching as the scene began again. this time, when the bodies collided, there was no biting, no blood. there was only a devastating, surgical precision that made vernon’s throat go dry.
link was being good. they were being perfect.
and as vernon watched the man he loved, the man he’d never be able to tell he loved perform for a world that would never truly see him, he felt the familiar, crushing weight of his own silence.
beautiful, vernon whispered to the empty air beside him, his finger hovering over the record button. just... beautiful.
he’d spend the night in the editing bay, alone with link’s face on every screen, cutting and stitching and perfecting, making sure the world saw the god and never the man who was bleeding internally. it was the only way vernon knew how to hold them. it was the only way he knew how to say i’m sorry.

he doesn't know what's wrong with him. his mouth is full of copper and it keeps coming up. his stomach lurches with nausea as he tries to swallow it down. he has to be good, doesn't he? if he can't be what the other needs then he knows this is a short lived endeavor. and vernon had believed him when link had swore up and down that he could do it.
under the pink neon lights in that bar. link had sworn he'd seen the face of god in vernon. and now he's spitting blood on his boots. link doesn't have the wherewithal to look mortified like he probably should. he's never felt shame before in his life. even in front of the camera, the worried gazes of everyone scattering but the two of them.
link stands there unmoving and then vernon is touching him. fingers grasping as his chin. link feels like he might pass out which would really piss the other man off. he feels sorry for whichever assistant has to clean up his blood under the exasperated gaze of vernon.
"you'd clap if it were." link says softly as he watches vernon through a half lidded gaze. his eyes feel itchy in the sockets. link wishes he'd stop looking at him like that. he can't control the blood. he doesn't know why he's bleeding. it's always been like that.
vernon's words aren't funny but the corner of link's lips quirk up. he's very dramatic. he wishes he could postpone the blood seeping from between his lips. his dark gaze lingers on his fingers and he wishes vernon would press them inside his mouth. look for the source of the bleeding himself. link would like that.
the thumb sliding across his lip makes him want to bite it. how can everything be his fault? surely there's someone else to blame. his hearts fluttering in his chest and link tries to focus on what vernon is saying. it sounds like the other mans mouth is full of static. so he nods instead. he can be what the other needs.
link will. he swallows the blood in his mouth. he can do what he's told if it means achieving vernon's desired goal. the other's walking away from him and link brings a hand up to press to his own mouth. he's going to beat the fuck out of that guy in the parking lot later. corner him against his car and drive his knuckles right into his teeth. there's nothing worse then bleeding in front of an audience.
link can only nod because the words seem thick in his mouth. slipping back down his throat. vernon crowds into his space again and link looks up at him. the faint smell of his cologne, the fancy coffee, link's blood all mingled together. irritation flashes in his gaze he's sure, "i'm fine."
link is already making his way to the dressing room with his hand covering his mouth. he doesn't want to leave a trail for some underpaid PA to clean up. the medic is waiting like they'd just been hoping for this. link pries open his jaws for them to see. she finds the bleeding, a gash in his cheek, link had bitten it so hard from his anger. it's always been all consuming. tore the delicate skin of his cheek. he just tells her to stitch it up and that he doesn't have time for lidocaine. link's eyes water until the pools are sliding down his cheeks. there's more bleeding until it stops. sutured up.
he knows the makeup girls are going to be irritated his tears have tracked lines down towards his jaw. it hasn't been twenty minutes. link knows his face is worth it even if nobody else can see that. he finds the girls looking bored out of their minds before he apologizes for the mess. they clean the blood from his face with no questions. link prefers that. he stares in the mirror as the mask slides back over his face. features molded back into indifference. his anger can be reserved for the set, for taking it out on his counterpart there.
link thanks them before he's crawling back to set like a stray. desperate and starving for it. he wants vernon to look at him again. the blood is cleaned up. he looks pristine again.
"you know that i'm not a liability."
vernon didn’t look up from the monitor when link reappeared, but he felt the shift in the room’s pressure. the air on a soundstage is a fickle thing ; it holds its breath when the talent is failing and hums when they’re clicking. right now, it was a low, vibrating thrum. he watched link’s reflection in the dark glass of the secondary screen, a ghost of a man, rebuilt with sutures and concealer.
vernon’s hands, resting on the arms of his director’s chair, tightened just enough to make his knuckles turn a waxy white. he had spent the last fifteen minutes staring at the last frame they’d captured before the collapse. in it, link looked divine. not in a holy sense, but in the way a storm looks before it levels a town. the raw, jagged edge of their performance was exactly why vernon had plucked them from that stagnant bar in the middle of nowhere. he’d seen a man who didn't just perform intimacy, but used it as a weapon to bridge the gap between his own loneliness and the world’s hunger.
“ liability is a technical term, link. it has nothing to do with talent, ” vernon said, his voice flat, devoid of the jagged anger from earlier. he finally turned the chair, the mechanism letting out a sharp, metallic groan.
he looked link up and down. the makeup artists were good professionals he paid top dollar to ensure that even a man falling apart looked like an ivory statue. but vernon saw the seams. he saw the slight puffiness in the cheek where the stitches held the skin together and the way link’s eyes, though focused, had a glassiness that suggested the adrenaline was the only thing keeping their knees from buckling.
vernon stood up. he was a head taller, a broad-shouldered silhouette that blocked out the harsh lunar lights of the set. he walked over, stopping just short of invading link’s personal space, though he could still smell the sharp, medicinal tang of the dressing room clinging to them.
“ you bit your own cheek, ” vernon stated, his tone dropping into that low, private register. “ that wasn't a stunt gone wrong. that was you losing control. you let the anger get bigger than the scene, and when you do that, you stop being a star. you just become a mess. ”
he reached out, his hand hovering near link’s face for a fraction of a second, a moment where the director almost vanished, replaced by a man who wanted to trace the line of that jaw and ask if it hurt, if they were cold, if they wanted to go home. then, the professional mask slammed back down. he used two fingers to tilt link’s head toward the light, inspecting the makeup.
“ i don't need a stray dog, link, ” he whispered, so low the boom mics wouldn't pick it up. “ i need a professional. if you want to go out into the parking lot after wrap and ruin your hands on some stuntman's teeth, that’s your business. but on my clock, you are a masterpiece. and masterpieces don't bleed on the floorboards. ”
vernon let go, his touch lingering a second too long on the cool skin. there was a time, years ago, when he might have said something else. before the contracts, before the 8K cameras, before he realized that loving someone in this industry was like trying to hold onto a handful of water. you either let them go, or you watched them evaporate under the heat of the lights. he’d chosen to be the light. it was the only way he knew how to keep link in his sight without destroying them both.
he stepped back, crossing his arms. the silence on the set was absolute. the crew was waiting for the explosion or the dismissal.
“ the lighting is set, ” vernon announced, his voice projecting to the rafters. “ we’re going from the top of the sequence. i want the intensity of the last take, but i want the precision of a surgeon. if i see a single drop of blood that isn't theatrical grade, we’re done for the day and the cost comes out of your backend. do we have an understanding ? ”
he didn't wait for a verbal answer. he saw the way link’s shoulders squared, the way that familiar, dangerous spark returned to their eyes. it was a cruel way to motivate them, but vernon knew no other language. tenderness was a liability ; discipline was a survival tactic.
as he walked back to his chair, vernon felt a dull ache in his own chest, a sympathetic tightness that mirrored link’s exhaustion. he hated that he still cared. he hated that he knew exactly how many stitches were behind that cheek and that he’d likely spend the night staring at the raw footage, editing out the pain to make link look invincible again.
he sat down, adjusted his glasses, and looked at the monitor. link was on their mark. they looked perfect. they looked like the god they’d claimed to see in vernon all those years ago.
cameras to speed, vernon commanded, his finger hovering over the intercom. and... action.
under his breath, a ghost of a prayer he didn't believe in : stay on your feet, kid. just stay on your feet.
in some ways, kaegan hated mornings this rough while training. he felt so off-kilter, as if he wasn't in his right mindset. sweat was already littering his face before his eyes met aelfric's as he stated his stance was too wide. fixing himself and his posture, it was a good thing it was aelfric helping teach him this morning because kaegan wouldn't have tolerated the other guards and their shenanigans.
"right, right, an extension of the soul." kaegan repeated the words as if in understanding, lowering his sword so aelfric could explain how to parry easier. as he was rounded and readjusted to a better position, kaegan spilled a half hearted laugh from his lips. "you'd be the first to say that, i'd think." kaegan revealed. aside from the hostages he believed in and the others within the kingdom with whom he held compassion for, nobody else would have complimented kaegan on his training to become a knight for his father. "do you truly believe that, aelfric? because i have to say, i quite remember you being one hell of a fighter."
there were fond memories of watching aelfric train while kaegan could only hope to one day participate in the same type of training. he had never wanted to be a hollowed painting in the castle, hanging by a thread and needle while absorbing all his father's cruelty and his mother's harshness. taking a breath when told to, his eyes flicked back over to aelfric.
chuckling to himself then, his posture remained how aelfric had adjusted him but his amusement was still evident. "yeah, i remember." there was a roll of his eyes, though affectionately. taking a deep breath as asked, he nodded softly, turning his attention back to the practice dummy. it was reassuring to know kaegan didn't have to be anyone but himself around his cousin aelfric. the other male seemed to hold a lot of positivity towards kaegan which always caused his heart to swell after a visit.
"that it does, my friend." kaegan commented on time and its changing. however, he hoped with more time, more laws and rules would change once his father saw the end of his days. once prompted to try again, kaegan began to strike at the dummy, feet less wide, sword lowered for a parry if necessary. each movement of his arm with the sword was swift, the hissing of the blade in the air as kaegan swung it multiple times before the dummy and then into the dummy itself.
focusing on his breathing as he did so, kaegan concentrated on each inhale and exhale of his breaths. being told he did it well this time, he felt a sense of pride overcome himself. halting from the practice, he brought the back of his free gloved hand to his forehead and wiped the beads away from his forehead.
"aelfric, tell me, what made you want to become a knight?" there was a lingering thought in the back of his mind all those years and yet, he'd never once asked. his cousin was one of his closest bonds and he still felt he hadn't known him well enough most days. perhaps because he wasn't often visiting like he used to as a child.
"was it a duty you felt you had to fulfill or was it by choice?" kaegan added, breathing a bit shallow from all the practice so far. with the balance within the kingdom's walls being significantly in their favor, he really had to wonder if it was a duty or just his own wish to fulfill a dream.
"and just to be certain, i think you are by far the only knight we have that i've ever trusted to do well with their duties." he chuckled lightly, shrugging his shoulders gently. "i highly doubt i could live up to your standard or even excel further than you have, aelfric."
aelfric’s gaze remained fixed on kaegan, tracking the way the light played off the beads of sweat on the younger man’s brow. the hiss of the blade cutting through the morning air was a sound aelfric usually associated with the grim finality of the front lines, but here, in the soft embrace of the fog, it sounded almost like music. when kaegan finally halted, their chest heaving with the effort of their exertion, aelfric let the training sword rest against his hip. he didn’t offer a critique this time ; the improvement in form was secondary to the spark of genuine focus he saw in his cousin’s eyes.
then came the question, the kind of question that stripped away the rank of general and the titles of the crown, leaving only the man beneath the steel.
aelfric let out a slow, thoughtful breath, his eyes wandering toward the horizon where the sun was beginning to bleed through the gray veil of the mist. he took a few steps toward the edge of the circle, his boots finding the familiar rhythm of the gravel.
what made me want to become a knight ? aelfric repeated softly, the words tasting like old dust and forgotten dreams. he turned back to kaegan, a wry, slightly melancholic smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. “ you ask if it was duty or choice, as if the two can ever truly be untangled in a family like ours. we are born into a cage of gold and iron, kaegan. for a long time, i believed that picking up the sword was the only way to ensure the cage didn't crush me. ”
he walked back toward his cousin, reaching out to steady kaegan’s arm as the younger man wiped their brow. the touch was brief, grounding, and devoid of the clinical coldness he usually showed his subordinates.
“ to be honest ? at first, it was fear, ” aelfric confessed, his voice dropping to that low, private register again. “ i saw the way the world looked at our family. i saw the weight on my father’s shoulders and the way the shadow of the throne seemed to swallow everyone who stood too close to it. i thought that if i became the strongest, the fastest, the most ruthless, i could control that shadow. i wanted to be the one who decided where the blade fell, rather than being the one waiting for it to drop. ”
he paused, his expression softening as he looked at kaegan. “ but then, i remember seeing you in those gardens. i remember the way you looked at the world with such... unburdened curiosity. you didn't see enemies ; you saw flowers and birds and stories. and i realized then that if i became a knight a true knight, not just a soldier, i could protect that. my choice wasn't about the glory of the crown or the thrill of the hunt. it was about creating a space where you didn't have to grow up as fast as i did. ”
aelfric let out a short, self-deprecating laugh at kaegan’s praise, shaking his head. the idea that he was the only trusted knight in the kingdom was a heavy compliment, one that felt like both a badge of honor and a brand.
“ don’t sell yourself short by measuring your worth against my shadow, kaegan, ” aelfric said firmly, though his eyes remained kind. “ you say you doubt you could live up to my standard, but you’re already surpassing it in the ways that actually matter. my standard is built on years of hardening myself, of silencing the parts of me that felt too much so i could lead men into the dirt. that isn't excellence, it’s survival. ”
he stepped closer, closing the distance until he could place a hand on kaegan’s shoulder. he could feel the warmth of the younger man’s skin through the tunic, the steady thrum of a heart that hadn't yet been forced to turn to stone.
“ i am a general because i am good at war. but you ? you will be a knight because you are good at being a man, ” aelfric murmured. “ you have a sense of justice that isn't dictated by a decree, but by your own soul. that is a far more difficult path to walk than the one i took. it’s easy to swing a sword when you don’t care who is on the other end of it. it is much harder to carry that sword and still care about the world it’s meant to defend. ”
aelfric squeezed kaegan’s shoulder, a silent gesture of solidarity. he knew the pressure kaegan felt the suffocating expectation of a father who saw people as tools and a mother who saw them as ornaments. he had lived it. he was still living it. but in this circle, under the fading mist, he could offer kaegan something the rest of the court couldn't : the truth.
“ if you excel further than i have and you will, it won't be because you hit the dummy harder or parried faster, ” aelfric continued, his gaze intense but warm. “ it will be because you kept your heart intact while doing it. that is the true victory. and as for trust... i trust you more than any man who has ever sworn an oath to me. not because of your blood, but because i know who you are when the armor comes off. ”
he stepped back, a playful glint returning to his eyes as he raised the training sword once more, though he kept his posture relaxed.
“ now, enough of this heavy talk. it makes me feel older than the castle walls, ” he teased, a genuine grin breaking through his usual stoicism. “ you’ve got the breath back in your lungs. show me that parry again. and remember : don't think about the high king, don't think about the crown, and for the love of the gods, don't think about me. just feel the weight of the steel and the ground beneath your feet. everything else is just noise. ”
aelfric nodded encouragingly, his presence a steady, protective anchor in the quiet morning. he would be the shield, just as he had promised himself all those years ago, so that kaegan could find a way to be a different kind of sword one that didn't just cut, but protected.
when being told he was still transparent, kai wasn't certain if it was because the alcohol had consumed his entire sense of retaining information or if it were due to the love that still pulsated through his chest for the other man. kai had never been good at holding things in around seungmin when they were close, when they were together and yet, that felt like eons ago despite only a three year stretch between the pair.
i don't want to talk to the whiskey : i want to talk to you.
kai tried to mutter a response, tried to will himself the energy to say a damn thing in reply, a promise he wouldn't be talking to a drunk that day. the flashy rapper in his unit couldn't maintain that same facade around seungmin, not even over the telephone line. he desperately tried in the gym and it had still failed while he recalled beating furiously on the locker. "mmm..." was all he could hum to agree with seungrmin's words; silent promise to not drink again and especially not on that shared time together which would be far too precious to waste.
turning flatly onto his stomach, his other cheek pressed firmly into his pillow but his grip on the phone remained tight, afraid of losing seungmin any moment too soon. after all, this was the first real conversation they'd shared since the world tore them apart and created an invisible rivalry that had somehow clutched at them and claimed both of their lives quite dramatically, unrelenting and painful. husking out another small breath, the drowsiness of his voice was more audible then, "'course i kept it.. you're crazy to think i didn't." while kai felt vulnerable, as if that fractured ice could break once more, it was like the confessions couldn't stop tumbling through his parted lips. "..it was the only part of you i had left, seungmin. the only part that was still real.." the only part i could still love.
"it's okay, shh." kai tried to comfort seungmin as he sounded almost agonized by the fact they were rivals from a corporate and fan standpoint. yet, to hear he was still loved, still thought of in ways he felt seungmin had long forgotten, an ache in his chest kept him alert enough to finish catching his words. his free hand roamed to the pillow and he rested it above his head, fingers dangling over the edge of the comfortable plush silk beneath his face. it wasn't as lovely as being close to his ex and it wasn't as soothing, but it brought a sense of relief to his tired soul.
kai almost wanted to retort that he wasn't tired, that he wanted to remain on the line but the words didn't come to him and he halted the moment seungmin stated he'd stay there, right there as the white noise. another breath of relief was given with a stronger exhale, as if his entire world was somehow turning right side up again, though it had to be secretive and controlled and carefully done under the watchful and knowing eyes of the idol world they both shared in.
i'm coming this weekend.
sleep clung heavier to his eyes with each fleeting second but kai caught that statement, heard how profoundly strong seungmin sounded in his resolve.
i'll find the plant. i'll find the key. and if we have to drown, we’re at least going to do it looking at each other, not through a screen. i love you too, you idiot. just... try to breathe until i get there.
doing as instructed, he focused on his breathing pattern, the rise and fall of his chest which still longed for something more with the other man -- the one he'd sworn at such a younger age that he'd always be there. the last of his words, being told he loved him, asking him to try to breathe until he got there only earned a slight nod of his head. kai was much too exhausted to speak any longer but was pleasant that the last sound he had heard before drifting into sleep was seungmin's voice. while it hadn't been expected in the slightest, it was gratefully received and kai would cling onto those words until the weekend came and they were standing face-to-face. lazily, he dropped his phone from his ear but slid it onto the pillow next to himself before completely succumbing to a sleep he desperately felt deprived of after three years of rivalry between him and the love of his life.
-------------------------------------------------------------
the last few days had come and gone rather too slowly for kai's liking. he'd been reprimanded for his lashing out at the gym, guessing some random had caught him leaving the locker room after his frustrations towards the steel were finished and his knuckles raw. the ceo even gave him a good earful, threatening to rip the rug right out from under his entire career, shattering his world in seconds if he had another lash out. none of his members understood it either and kai had not budged or told them any details as to why or how it happened.
instead, he clung onto the hope of seungmin retaining his promise, of seungmin walking through that dorm room once saturday rolled around. while each of his group mates tried desperately to retrieve more information out of kai, he simply guised his act of rebellion in the locker room to that of losing a recent award at a popularized show where many idols took the stage to perform that night -- seungmin and his group included.
however, once the morning came and the dorm was entirely emptied bright and early for the interview he wasn't allowed to be a part of, kai's body was still trying to adjust to waking up as he waved bye to each member while they slipped through the door. shutting it behind them, he gave a twist of the lock and proceeded to rummage through the fridge for a quick breakfast.
please, seungmin. don't leave me hanging, his desperation was too real, too gut wrenching since their secretive late night talk. instead of obsessing on the thought, kai did as usual on a saturday that was free on his schedule. he took a long energizing shower, one which relieved his aching bones. after cleaning up and dressing himself, he'd managed to wrap his damaged knuckles in a bandage that the ceo had forced him into doing despite the wound looking worse than it felt any longer. his health team had given him a specific ointment to dull the ache and repair the damage while reminding him that it would be a bit before his skin was repaired.
kai didn't care. that was the furthest thing from his mind while he finished the last of the wrapping and snuggly fixed the bandage wrap with a small metal clip which kept it woven together neatly and allowed it to remain stilled; no way to budge or fall away from his skin.
eating a few grapes at the island of the kitchen then, his damp hair had yet to fully dry before he padded away into his room and plopped onto his back on his bed like usual. kai stared at the ceiling a long moment, hastily glancing at his phone to check if there were any signs of seungmin's arrival any time soon. yet, he suspected seungmin would just show up and not even call or text -- that was still too risky and kai was well aware of the fall that would become of the other idol should he be caught.
huffing out a breath, he reached for his bedside table and grasped his console off the dock. if he had to wait some time, he may as well have gotten lost in some random indie title on his switch or perhaps even some type of fast paced action game. his indecisiveness just spoke of his nerves and how they were frantically racing through his form, anxiety pooling like a tight coil in his gut.
kai hadn't known how long he'd laid there in silence, just the sounds of the fighting game in his ears as he pressed particular patterns of the buttons for special inputs and moves in the game holding all of his attention. the only time he'd left his room since was to finally fix his hair, brush his teeth after another light snack and maintain his skin care routine for his face. he wore a lazy and loose heather-grey muscle tank while sporting some casual and comfortable shorts along with it.
it wasn't like he had to keep up appearances with seungmin, the other man knew him too well. since they weren't leaving the dorm either, there was no need to dress nicer to fix his hair into a better look. about the only other thing he did to freshen up was apply a layer of deodorant to himself and a quick spritz of a lightly ocean scented cologne he'd only recently fallen in love with. it wasn't sharp, it didn't hold that haughty musk of a celebrity. it was clean, refreshing and smooth, something he could sport daily without feeling like an 'idol'. kai hadn't wanted to feel like a spotlight was centered on him today, he just wanted to feel the soft gaze of seungmin's eyes and perhaps reach a mutual ground so things weren't so tragically painful for either of them any longer.
while awaiting the other's arrival, all sorts of questions spun through his mind. so many different scenarios as to how the day could go between them. yet, the excitement within the walls of his heart also couldn't be contained and his lips curled into a faint grin while his eyes remained fixed on his video game at hand until seungmin could arrive. @sqnctuary
the layout of the underground parking garage was a labyrinth of concrete and fluorescent hum, a place seungmin had memorized over three years of claustrophobic idol life. moving through the blind spots of the CCTV cameras wasn't just a skill anymore ; it was an instinct, a survival mechanism honed by the desperate need for a single moment of unmonitored air.
he looked like a shadow among shadows. a heavy black hoodie, a cap pulled low enough to obscure the bridge of his nose, and a face mask that felt like a gag. every time a car door slammed in the distance or a set of headlights swept across the pillars, his heart hammered a frantic rhythm against his ribs not out of fear for his safety, but out of a terrifying, exhilarating realization : he was actually doing this. he was walking away from the script.
the drive to kai’s dorm was a blur of neon lights and white-knuckled grip on the steering wheel. he didn't take his usual car, he’d borrowed a nondescript sedan from a staff member he’d bribed with a promise of never mentioning that weekend in jeju. his mind was a mess of logistics and ghosts. he kept expecting his manager to call, kept expecting the sky to fall, but the world remained stubbornly indifferent to his rebellion.
When he reached the building, his breath hitched. This was the fortress of the 'rival.' This was where the man who haunted his nightmares and his playlists lived.
he found the potted plant. it was a pathetic, half-wilted thing tucked into a corner of the hallway exactly the kind of thing kai would forget to water. reaching under the heavy ceramic base, his fingers brushed cold metal. the key. it felt heavy, a literal anchor to a reality he had tried to drown for thirty-six months.
the lock turned with a soft, definitive click.
seungmin stepped inside, closing the door behind him and leaning his back against the wood. he didn't move for a long minute. he just breathed. the air here didn't smell like the sterile, citrus-scented halls of his own agency, it smelled like kai. it was a mix of that new, clean ocean cologne and the faint, lingering scent of laundry detergent that kai had used since they were eighteen. it hit seungmin like a physical blow to the solar plexus.
he moved through the quiet dorm, his boots silent on the hardwood. he passed the kitchen island noticing the scattered grapes and followed the sound of electronic chirps and button-mashing coming from the bedroom.
standing in the doorway, seungmin didn't say anything at first. he just watched. kai looked... human. not the perfect idol with the snarling lip and the designer leather, but just a guy in a muscle tank, their hair still damp from a shower, lost in a video game. the sight of the bandages on kai's knuckles made a sharp, protective heat flare in seungmin’s throat. he wanted to scream at them for being so reckless, and he wanted to press his mouth to the gauze until the pain stopped.
“ you’re still using the same combos, ” seungmin said, his voice raspy and stripped of its idol polish. “ predictable. you always lean too hard on the heavy kick when you get nervous. ”
he pulled off his mask and cap, tossing them onto a nearby chair. his hair was a mess, and there were dark circles under his eyes that no amount of makeup could hide, but for the first time in years, he wasn't posing. he took a few steps further into the room, stopping just a few feet from the bed.
the anger was there, simmering at the edges the memory of every cold shoulder at award shows, every "no comment" in interviews, every night he’d spent staring at the ceiling wondering if kai hated him as much as the fans wanted them to. but looking at kai now, the anger felt like a coat that was five sizes too big. he just wanted to take it off.
“ i almost didn’t come, ” seungmin admitted, his gaze dropping to kai's bandaged hand. “ i sat in the car for twenty minutes thinking about how easy it would be to just turn around. to keep being the ice prince. to keep winning. ”
he looked back up, his eyes searching kai’s face with a raw, desperate intensity.
“ but then i remembered the way you sounded on the phone. and i realized i’m tired of winning if it means i have to keep breathing this lead alone. ”
he let out a short, self-deprecating laugh, moving to sit on the very edge of the bed, careful not to crowd the space but needing to be close enough to feel the heat radiating off the other man. the rivalry, the charts, the CEOs, the millions of eyes they all felt a thousand miles away.
“ move over, ” he whispered, the command softened by a tremor of vulnerability. “ you’re terrible at this game, and i’m tired of standing. just... give me a second to remember how to be in the same room as you without wanting to break something. ”
@bruiscdmouth sent in sender spits out a mouthful of blood at receiver's feet.
the heavy, humid air of the soundstage felt like a physical weight, thick with the scent of cheap latex, industrial-grade lubricant, and the metallic tang of copper that was currently pooling on the scuffed floorboards.
vernon didn’t flinch. he didn’t even blink. he just stood there, his arms crossed over a chest that felt increasingly tight with every passing second of this disastrous shoot. he looked down at the dark, visceral splatter on his polished leather boots a sharp contrast to the pristine, clinical aesthetic he’d demanded for this scene.
he slowly looked up, his gaze sliding past the expensive 8K cameras and the frozen, terrified production assistants, landing squarely on link.
“ is that your grand finale, link ? ” vernon’s voice was a low, dangerous rumble. it wasn't loud, but it cut through the sudden silence of the studio like a razor. “ because if you’re looking for applause, you’re in the wrong fucking building. ”
vernon took a slow, deliberate step forward, the soles of his boots sticking slightly to the cooling blood. he was a man built on schedules, lighting ratios, and the absolute mastery of the human form as a product. to him, link wasn't just a performer ; he was the centerpiece of a multi-million dollar brand. and right now, the centerpiece was leaking.
“ we are three hours behind. three, ” vernon said, holding up three thick fingers. “ i have a distribution deadline for this shoot that doesn't care about your internal hemorrhaging or your ego. i spent forty thousand dollars on this set design to make it look like a high-end lunar colony, not a goddamn slaughterhouse. ”
he reached out, his hand steady as he gripped link’s chin, forcing the younger man to look him in the eye. vernon’s thumb swiped across link’s bottom lip, smearing the remaining red across a jawline that had sold a hundred thousand subscriptions. he looked at the blood on his thumb with the clinical detachment of a jeweler inspecting a flawed diamond.
“ you’re pale, ” vernon noted, his tone shifting from anger to a chilling, professional concern. “ your pulse is thready. if you drop dead on my clock, the paperwork alone will kill me before the heart attack does. so, let’s be very clear about what happens next. ”
vernon let go of link’s face, turning his back to pace a short line. he wasn't a monster not entirely but he had seen the industry swallow boys like link whole and spit them out far more broken than this. he knew that sympathy in this moment was a poison ; it would only make link feel like a victim, and victims didn't finish shoots.
“ you’re going to go to the dressing room, ” vernon directed, not looking back. “ you’re going to let the medic check if that’s a busted lung or just a bitten tongue from you being a clumsy amateur. you’re going to drink a liter of electrolyte water, and you’re going to stop bleeding on my floor. ”
he stopped and turned, his shadow stretching long across the set. “ i don’t care what happened in that last take. i don't care who hit who too hard or which stunt went south. in this room, i am the only one allowed to be tired. i am the only one allowed to be hurt. do you understand me ? ”
vernon saw the flicker of something in link’s eyes defiance, maybe, or just pure exhaustion. it didn't matter. vernon had built an empire on the backs of men who thought they were invincible until they met him. he walked back over, leaning in close enough that link could smell the expensive espresso and the faint scent of cedarwood cologne.
“ i took you out of that dive bar in your hometown because you had a look that people would pay to see destroyed, ” vernon whispered, his voice dropping into a register that was almost intimate. “ but destroyed is a fantasy, link. it’s an act. actually breaking ? that’s just bad business. it’s boring. and i don’t do boring. ”
he straightened his tie, his expression returning to its usual mask of stoic professionalism. he looked at the head PA, who was still hovering nearby with a roll of paper towels.
clean this up, vernon snapped. and get the backup lighting rig moved ten degrees to the left. if link manages to stay conscious, i want his skin looking like marble, not a corpse.
he looked back at link one last time. there was a microscopic softening in the corner of his eye, a brief flash of the man who actually gave a damn before the director took over again. it was gone in a heartbeat.
“ you have twenty minutes, link. if you’re not back on that mark, cleaned up and ready to perform, i’m calling the agency and telling them you’re a liability. and you know as well as i do that a star who bleeds without a script doesn't stay a star for long. ”
vernon turned on his heel, walking toward the monitors without looking back. his boots left faint, red prints on the floor, marking his path like a countdown. he sat in his chair, adjusted his glasses, and stared at the screen, waiting for the world to align with his vision again.
clock's ticking, he muttered to himself, his heart hammering a rhythm that contradicted his calm exterior. don't make me replace you, kid. i actually liked that face.
A dull, creeping ache began to gnaw at the side of Ivan’s head, the pressure trickling down until it throbbed behind his eyes. He squeezed them shut, trying to ebb the pain before it could take hold. He noticed the servants moving with a frantic, light-footed grace around him—they saw the tension in his jaw and recognized the shadow of his father in his expression. But Ivan wasn't his father. He prided himself on his restraint; he would not lash out at those just doing their jobs. He was a civilized man, even if the person sitting across from him was testing the very limits of that civility.
He could feel Kaegan’s presence like a shift in the air. He had expected the man to take the master’s seat, to claim the authority he’d maneuvered for, and the sight of Kaegan choosing elsewhere caused a brief flicker of confusion to cross Ivan's face. He quickly masked it, forcing his muscles to remain slack and unfazed, though his body betrayed him—his head tilted slightly, his eyes tracking Kaegan with a heavy, unblinking focus.
In that moment, Ivan recognized something in the man's gaze. Those eyes looked the way Ivan’s felt after a long, exhausting brawl of words with his father. It threw his rhythm off. He wanted to look away, yet he found himself trapped in the quiet weight of Kaegan’s stare, seeing him properly for the first time all night.
The bitterness remained, though it felt more like a cold weight than a burning fire. He didn't trust this "raw" version of the nobleman; he couldn't bring himself to believe it. There was no benefit for Kaegan in being vulnerable, and Ivan had learned the hard way that men in power rarely did anything without a price.
When Kaegan spoke of spending fifty years in a loveless, silent marriage, Ivan’s hand slowly clenched into a white-knuckled fist beneath the table. It was madness. He had heard the court was filled with people who played at tragedy, but to willfully choose a husband who would never return his affection felt like a uniquely cruel hobby. Ivan had no room left in his heart to offer, and it baffled him that Kaegan would want to reside in the ruins of it.
"I don't think I would be thanking you anytime soon, milord. I hope you never forget that," Ivan said, his voice quiet but sharp. "Do not ever ask me for retribution for a life you willingly signed up for. This is entirely one-sided, a path chosen without my approval, and yet here we are. Because of you."
He looked toward the window, thinking of the approaching winter. Every year, Ivan wondered if the coming cold would finally be his last, feeling a strange kinship with the white scenery that mirrored the emptiness he carried. If Kaegan wanted a marriage of convenience and coldness, Ivan would provide exactly that.
"Then let’s hold our marriage on the first day of snow," he challenged. If his vitriol didn't deter the man, perhaps the reality of a bleak, winter wedding would. "Marry me on that day, and I will be the husband you’ve asked for. Unfiltered. Difficult. Always honest about the hate I feel. If that is what you desire, that is what you will have."
He took a slow drink of water to steady his nerves, then signaled to a servant with a small, respectful nod. "Please, bring the fine spirits my father keeps for himself. Since we are celebrating, we might as well do it at his expense. Please pour my betrothed as well" it is his birthday today, it should not be a crime to drink the night away.
He turned back to Kaegan, his expression settling into a mask of weary iron. "My mother always said I was never one to hide my moods or pretend for the sake of peace. I hope you are truly prepared for that, Lord Kaegan. I won't be playing the part of the happy groom."
"I hope your patience is infinite as you appear now, milord. Cheers to forever?"
kaegan watched the way ivan’s knuckles turned the color of bleached bone beneath the table. he didn't miss the flicker of a headache crossing ivan’s brow, nor the way their eyes darted toward the window as if calculating the height of the jump or the distance to the tree line. it was a look kaegan knew intimately the frantic, silent inventory of a soul looking for an exit in a room with no doors.
when ivan spoke, the words were designed to be jagged, intended to draw blood or, at the very least, to force kaegan to drop the mask of the gentle savior. ivan wanted a fight. they wanted the nobleman across from them to snap, to show the iron fist that surely lived inside the velvet glove, because an honest enemy was infinitely easier to manage than a kind stranger.
but kaegan didn't snap. he didn't even stiffen.
“ the first day of snow, ” kaegan repeated softly, the words tasting like woodsmoke and quietude. a small, genuine smile touched his lips not a smirk of victory, but the expression of a man who had finally been given a map. “ it’s a deal, then. we will marry when the sky turns white. i’ve always found the first snowfall to be the only time konsrad is truly quiet. the city stops its whispering for an hour or two. i think it will suit us perfectly. ”
he watched the servant approach with the general’s private reserve, the heavy crystal decanter catching the light of the chandeliers. kaegan caught the servant’s eye and gave a brief, reassuring nod, wordlessly signaling that the tension at the table wasn't their burden to carry. as the amber liquid was poured into his glass, kaegan waited until the servant had retreated into the shadows before he spoke again.
“ i didn't ask for retribution, ivan. and i won't, ” kaegan said, his voice grounding and steady. “ you speak as though i am a man who keeps a ledger of debts owed to my heart. i promise you, i burned that book a long time ago. you owe me no gratitude, no smiles, and certainly no love. if this is a path i chose without your approval and it is then the weight of it is mine to carry, not yours. i am not a child who buys a bird and then complains when it refuses to sing. ”
he picked up the glass, the spirits sharp and medicinal, smelling of peat and old, expensive grudges. he didn't drink immediately. instead, he looked at ivan really looked at them beyond the marble mask and the venomous barbs. he saw the political nightmare he had purchased, yes, but he also saw the twelve-year-old boy who had likely sat at this same table feeling just as small and just as hunted.
“ you say you won't play the part of the happy groom, ” kaegan continued, his tone devoid of any patronizing edge. “ good. i’ve seen enough happy grooms in court to last me three lifetimes. most of them are lying through their teeth while they calculate their bride’s dowry. i would much rather have you, exactly as you are : furious, exhausted, and remarkably real. if you want to spend our wedding night telling me how much you despise the color of my robes or the way i breathe, i will listen. i might even agree with you on the robes. ”
he let a small, dry chuckle escape him, a sound of unexpected warmth in the cold opulence of the hall. he raised his glass slightly, the light dancing in the liquid.
“ my patience is not infinite, ivan. i’m a man, not a saint. i have bad days. i get tired. i get lonely. but my word ? my word is a fortress. i told you i would be the sheath for your blade, and i meant it. you can strike against me until you’re too tired to hold the sword, and i will still be here when the dust settles. not because i’m a hero, but because i decided a long time ago that if i was going to be tied to someone for the rest of my life, i wanted it to be someone who made me feel something more than boredom. even if that something is the sting of your honesty. ”
he took a slow, measured sip of the general’s spirits. it burned, a harsh and unforgiving heat that matched the atmosphere of the room. he set the glass down with a soft clink and leaned forward just an inch, his eyes softening with a profound, quiet empathy.
“ cheers to you, kaegan, ” he murmured to himself, a wry acknowledgment of the day he had spent navigating minefields. then, he looked back at ivan, his gaze unwavering. “ you asked for a toast. to forever ? ”
