Eddie groaned dramatically. "Chill you probably have hundreds at home and, history that's my greatest enemy." He flops into the chair beside you with the grace of an elephant in a china shop blowing a raspberry dramatically
A small laugh escaped you before you could stop it.
"There it is!" Eddie pointed jeering as if he had just won an oscar, not bothering about the librarian shushing him in the distance "I knew you could laugh, I've never heard the school geek giggling, it's cute"
"I- uh- but- I-" Your cheeks warmed. Most people at Hawkins High thought you were quiet and awkward. Eddie, somehow, payed attention more than you thought and never seemed intimidated by your brains and big hoodies that swallowed you making it easier to hide in the back of classrooms.
As the afternoon passed and for some reason, he stayed with you, doodling dragons in the margins of his notebook while you studied. Your father's sharp words about the munson boy faded out of your brain entirely, every so often he'd ask a question about something you were reading or studying, seemingly genuinely interested in your answer.
"You know," Eddie said as the sun began to set through the library windows, "you're a lot cooler than people think."
You freeze and blink in surprise.

"And you're not as evil as people think," you replied nervously but gently looking up at him as you feel his fingers tilt your chin slowly up you can feel the cold metal of his rings pressing against your ever-heating chin and cheeks and you all but short-circuit right then and there. Forgetting to breathe and getting lost in his chocolate brown eyes
He breaks the tense silence gently dropping his hand from your chin carefully with a grin slowly spread across his face. "Guess we're both full of surprises, dork"
The next second, hellfire club come tumbling into the library trying to find their dungeon master, ruining the first real interaction you had experienced with a boy.
"Same time tomorrow, maybe we could get milkshakes after?" Eddie asked hastily already grabbing things to leave and calling out to hellfire club.
*Oh my god. Is he actually asking me out of my god oh my god*
"Like a date?" You say cautiously "bingo." He replies, confident and smug as ever showing off the dimples that have always been your weakness, he finishes packing up his doodles and runs to join his loud group of dungeons and dragons club, not before winking at you extremely pointedly, the last thing he sees is your intense blushing and shyness that he eats up
For the rest of the night, neither of you could stop smiling as you recalled the events of the library

ok so, I approached my local library with a proposal to donate a mural as a way to A: build portfolio/gain practical experience and B: give back to a beloved public institution. The director was very enthusiastic about it and i've been working on it since the beginning of March. Come with me as I endeavor to paint what is in all honesty an excessive amount of birds
I wanted the birds to look like they were actually in the space so first thing after doing the draft was to do a lighting study
after that I covered the walls in letters in lieu of a projector/vr headset bc i have neither of those :) Then i take a picture of the section of wall and superimpose the lineart over top of it so I can pencil in the lines
et voila
and that was a whole week on it's own so next comes the paintin' >:)
my chains are broken i am FREE. although i did have a great deal of fun with this, the barring on the wings itself took me like four days and i am READY to move on
this was a week and a half of continuous work so please excuse me for getting a little emotional in the bg 🙏

the male and female ones are gonna be posted separately bc they're taking a lot longer lol but yea! super happy i was able to capture the iridescent green of the head, i found metallic green and blue paint at a craft store that really made his head POP. it looks better in person i promise
ALSO!! As this is the 10th one, BIG announcement. The end is in sight!!!!! I plan to finish within the next 3 weeks and there will be a small dedication ceremony/ unveiling happening at the library to commemorate its completion on the 16th of May. the 16th is looming in the distance so i'm trying to get thru these as quickly as i can so i can have as much time for the GBH as possible. i still need to do the names next to all of them so i've got about a week and a half to finish everything which is GREAT because i have adhd and nothing gets my ass in gear like a fuckin deadline, let me tell you
power couple that they are, here's bird number 12 and 13,
the Northern Cardinals, Cardinalis cardinalis
and NOW that they are complete, ITS GO TIME, in the next five days (library's closed for mother's day 😭😭) i need to have the GBH fully rendered, the names of the birds vectored, weeded, masked, applied to the wall, and then painted, plus additional cattails throughout. I may be able to get away with just getting the GBH done in time for the unveiling and then just have the names and cattails added later, but i'm gonna really try to get it all done in time. BUT, i have a plan. Part of why i take so long on these is because i really am just figuring it out as I do it lmao. there have been many a time where i am sitting on top of the ladder googling "how to paint birds" but I think if i take the time tomorro to do all that figuring out how to approach it beforehand, this will go a lot faster. I may also recruit some of my artist friends to help with the placing of the names... hrmm we'll see.
Anyways, shout out to the librarian who tracked down exactly the thing i needed so i could figure out where to place the highlights in my birds eyes, ur the real mvp
thank you to everyone who reached out or got excited about this project, it genuinely gave me the fuel i needed to keep going. In total, the 480+ total hrs it took me to cover this wall pales in comparison to how long its expected to spend on there, hopefully imparting a sense of beauty and love for the natural world to the next generation and here's hoping i'm only getting started with these.
hey it's me black mold. thanks for running your window air conditioner all summer. whatever you do, do not regularly clean the removable filter. that's not necessary
you should also never ever unplug the air conditioner and stick a flashlight in the vent that blows air to see if we're in there. it's very bad, that place should not be checked
and whatever you do, if you've already made the mistake of unplugging it, don't remove it from the window for cleaning if possible. and whether it's possible to remove the unit or not, don't carefully disassemble the front panel, document where the screws go and plastic bits go, and open up the vent more to be able to get into it easily
as black mold, i'm an expert on this. you should heed my warnings: now, if you've somehow made the mistake of doing all of the above, you should not use warm water and dish soap to CLEAN the inside of the vent thoroughly. DON'T ever use a bottle brush to get into the hard to reach places. and certainly don't rinse and dry the cleaned area before carefully putting it back together
there's nothing wrong with us, black mold. we don't cause or exacerbate breathing conditions like asthma or other illnesses. it's cool, we're cool
furthermore, if you're capable of removing the window unit, DONT take a hose with the same soapy water and wash the portion of the window unit that sits outside the window and is therefore weatherproofed.
whatever you do, don't allow the air conditioner to dry before plugging it back in and turning it on again
and if you have a central air conditioner, you will definitely never ever consult a manual or sources online to perform a similar cleaning procedure on the cooling unit outside.
lastly, if you're physically unable to do the things we (the black mold) warned you not to do above, you should never ever ask someone to help you or hire a service to do it.
Also even if you do not have the time, space or ability to do some of the the things in the OP, definitely do not clean the coils (the awful sharp flat stacks of metal) with foaming coil cleaner. That removes the beneficial black mold (us) holding the unit together. It will be completely unsatisfying to watch the foam clean out the Super Beneficial Black Mold, Mildew, Hair, Lint & Dust Combo™ (that is not only a health hazard but making the unit less efficient at cooling necessary for air conditioner function) and leave the metal shiny.
It is a lot of elbow grease and definitely not just spraying a can and waiting. Especially do not use the ones that are self rinsing via the natural condensation of water around the coils where all you have to do is let the foam settle a couple hours before turning the unit back on. These foaming cleaners are also terrible to use on the removable air intake vent covers. You definitely do not just have to spray the opposite side of all the trapped shit on the plastic mesh and let the foam push it off. Also that stuff on the cover is great for you and your air conditioner.
Trust us. We, the mold, know much more about air conditioners than the people who make aerosol cans you can pick up for like $8 at home depot. Definitely do not do this a couple times a season.
Undiagnosed but I do wear several knitting tools (tape measure bracelet, stitch markers, dpns as hair accessories). I wear these every damn day and keep forgetting I have them.
I used a paper clip for a stitch marker yesterday because I forgot I was wearing 6 stitch markers 6!!! on a necklace.

i think that the whole "beginner fiber artists should take it easy and just make some washcloths!" vs "beginner fiber artists should start with hard projects they're interested in!" debate often misses the point. both approaches are fine! just pick the one that is right for you!
if you are easily frustrated by feeling like you've failed and you are more interested in learning the craft than you are in doing any specific project, start slow! buy some cheap yarn, make some simple stuff you don't care about! the value is in the practice, even if you arent interested in keeping the final project!
if you struggle to motivate yourself to learn new skills and you are okay with feeling like you failed or fudging it sometimes, then go wild! knit that cabled sweater, crochet that lace shawl! you'll have something you made that you want to have, and that's what matters to you!
how we learn is very personal, very individual. just because something worked well for you doesn't mean it will work well for everyone.
I don’t know who needs to hear this but it’s okay for writing to be a HOBBY that you do because you enjoy, and that you don’t want to do when you’re not enjoying it. No one’s up in the business of knitters telling them they have to be willing to SUFFER and SWEAT or they’ll NEVER FINISH THAT SWEATER and they can’t expect good things to come to them. I don’t know why our current culture around writing is so intense, but I’m here to support your casual, relaxing writing habit. If people can glue pompoms together or knit a scarf or watch hours of streaming shows with their spare time there’s absolutely no reason writers can’t waste time writing just for pleasure, without any expectation that they’re going to Achieve something Amazing and Important or make a bunch of money or whatever.
I stand corrected: According to a great many who have piped up in the comments, apparently people ARE up in the business of knitters. What the hell. Get out of the business of knitters, people. May we all enjoy our hobbies without pressure to professionalize.
