“The total number of military and civilian casualties in World War I, was around 40 million. There were 20 million deaths and 21 million wounded. The total number of deaths includes 9.7 million military personnel and about 10 million civilians. The Entente Powers (also known as the Allies) lost about 5.7 million soldiers while the Central Powers lost about 4 million.” © : Nadège Mougel More info: http://www.centre-robert-schuman.org/…/REPERES%20%E2%80%93%…
There is 1.2-1.3m dots in this picture, visually representing number of lost lives for British Imperial Forces. Each dot stands for lost life- each with his/her own dreams, understanding, knowledge, vision of better future, contribution, hope…. I think I’ve done good job with these dots, but can you imagine what could have been done with those lives? I have worked on this piece for 100 hours which is nothing, comparing to 100 years we had to learn lessons since end of The Great War…. but did we really learn enough? I wanted to put those numbers into different perspective, make them more rememberable and give you little bit of food for thought, meanwhile you are remembering ….and please remember that it was division between European nations, which led to The Great Loss… which ultimately led to the WW2 and decades of communism for east Europe.
