The math essay that noooo-one asked for!

Sonic’s world has been shown with two moons in a few different media (AoStH, Sonic Advance 3, Riders: ZeroG), but if their world is ours (as suggested by Archie and SatAM), maybe that second moon is the ARK? If it is, is it the bigger moon or the smaller moon? And how big does it look EXACTLY?

Well, we can figure that all out with some real-life equivalences and some math! Let’s take a look at the moon first: the moon has a diameter of 3,474 KM and orbits around the Earth at around 385,000 KM from center to center. If we take away the Earth’s radius (6,378 KM) from that, the center of the moon is 378,622 KM away from sea level. Calculate this all out, and the moon’s apparent size is 31.542 Minutes / 31 Minutes 52 Seconds. (I unfortunately couldn’t translate this further into CM but oh well). Wikipedia confirms: the moon’s angular size varies from 29 Minutes 20 Seconds to 34 Minutes 6 Seconds

Why am I doing this all in kilometers? Because the only size we have of the ARK (from a Sonic X catch card) is 15 KM. Since it’s an orb(-ish), we’ll take that as the ARK’s diameter.

Now, how far away is the ARK? We don’t know. But we have some hints; despite being inactive for 50 years, it’s still orbiting the Earth, meaning it probably doesn’t experience orbital decay. The International Space Station needs boosting a few different times a YEAR to prevent orbital decay because it’s in Low Earth Orbit. This means it still experiences drag of atmospheric gasses. If that were the case with the ARK, it’d probably have crashed.

So what’s above Low Earth Orbit then? Medium Earth Orbit. Clever, right? Most Medium Earth Orbit objects orbit at 20,350 KM. Interestingly, this also gives them exactly 12 hours to orbit the Earth. Let’s go with that to start.

So, with the ARK being 20,350 KM away and 15 KM in diameter, this calculates to an apparent size of 2.534 Minutes / 2 Minutes 32 Seconds.

But that’s SUPER tiny compared to the moon, isn’t it? It’s about equivalent to Neptune vs the moon. That doesn’t seem to line up with SA2 at all. So what if we move it closer? Medium Earth Orbit begins at 2000 KM, so while it probably wouldn’t be on that EXACT marker, let’s use it for our purposes.

Calculate again. The ARK is still 15 KM in diameter, but now it’s only 2000 KM away. This result gives us 25.783 Minutes / 25 Minutes 47 Seconds.

So the ARK still looks smaller than the moon, but not THAT much smaller. 25.783 divided by 31.542 equals around 0.8.

So, in conclusion, assuming the ARK is in the lowest ranges of Medium Earth Orbit, the ARK appears to be approximately 4 fifths of the size of the moon from Earth!

I haven't actually shared this here yet, but I made the Sonic prime language (mainly found in New Yolk City) and turned it into a font in alphabetical order.

I had to add two more symbols, since there were less than the amounts of letters there is in the alphabet. It's a fantasy language with no meaning. Now it can have meaning.

Hi guys! I’m very excited to release the trailer for WTLTS’s Halloween Spin-off game, where we get to experience Shadow’s first Halloween on the Space Colony ARK! Will the holiday go smoothly? Let’s find out! The team and I have been working very hard to make something special, and I certainly hope we’ll have delivered with this glimpse at the game! 😄 (Sorry about the low graphics quality though! The trailer’s video file was too big so it had to be lowered, but I promise the trailer is still good!)

I’m hoping this little game will give everyone something fun to do while waiting for WTLTS’s prologue! And Haunted Space’s release date is on the 25 of October, so that’s right around the corner! 👻😄 👻
