Official “Canon” Interactions between Sonic Chao and Shadow Chao in Sonic x Shadow x Chao and Chao Tales:
Sonic Chao and Shadow Chao’s official “canon” interactions is that close friends and having a deep emotional intimacy between them, which was officially acknowledged on one scene in Chao Tales Halloween Special.
On Sonic Chao’s Side:
It can be said Shadonic Chao/Sonadow Chao’s actual canon status is semi-canon and have mutual feelings because in Chao Tales Halloween Special episode, Sonic Chao was exhausted to run in a race, so Shadow Chao decides to help Sonic Chao and when Shadow Chao touched Sonic Chao’s arm, Sonic Chao surprised, then looked at Shadow Chao with sparkling eyes with a heart shape expression for a few seconds.
This indicates that Sonic Chao likes Shadow Chao since their heart expression and sparkling eyes towards Shadow Chao can be mean that Sonic Chao feels emotional intimate with having strong love feelings towards Shadow Chao, which leads to Sonic Chao has a sense of trust and deeply closeness to Shadow Chao. On a side note, Sonic Chao had never given a heart expression towards to any chaos before (except Sonic the Hedgehog). (4, 5)
Sonic Chao must have been affected to Shadow Chao ever since in Chao Tales’ first episode, before becoming Sonic Chao, they gave a heart expression towards Shadow Chao to express that they pleased and comfort around them after hatching from an egg and hugging Shadow Chao. So, Sonic Chao has been interested in Shadow Chao afterwards, since they work together to defeat the Doctor Eggman in Chao Tales’ last episode, find their chao friends in Sonic x Shadow x Chao and raced as a pair team to win the race in Halloween Special episode.
On Shadow Chao’s Side:
It can also be said Shadow Chao likes Sonic Chao too because when Sonic Chao looked at Shadow Chao with sparkling eyes as heart expression, Shadow Chao did not show any disgust or annoyance, instead Shadow Chao only looked at Sonic Chao with a cold face by touching Sonic Chao’s arm gently with their neutral face expression by being a Tsundere (6, 7, 8), which must be the reason why Shadow Chao did not show any affection face towards Sonic Chao at that moment but more like avoided because of being so focused on the race, which is another sign of Tsundere but they showed deep trust bond and pleasantness towards Sonic Chao, as helping Sonic Chao to win the race in Halloween Special.
Sonic Adventure 2 Chao Mating:
It has been hinted that Sonic, Shadow and their chao versions could be lovers due to in Sonic Adventure 2 chao mating, since Sonic Chao and Shadow Chao are the only Sonic characters can breed and mate with each other as being mortal, which happens when both Chao kiss each other on a flower circle before they create a new Chao egg from their mating.
On a side note, other Sonic characters’ chao version (like Tails Chao, Knuckles Chao, Amy Rose Chao), cannot breed or mate with other chaos like Sonic Chao and Shadow Chao because of being immortal.
Trivia:
• It was stated Sonic Chao and Shadow Chao were unofficial Chao characters at first in Sonic Adventure 2 (2), but many years later they appeared in medias like in Shadow's 2022 October column wallpaper, (which was Shadow Chao's first appearance) Sonic x Shadow x Chao and Chao Tales. It could be SEGA and Sonic Team decided to become them official characters on some of their official medias.
