When you run into your ex

it was that super casual “good morning boyfriend” peck right at the end.

because i was prepared for the brilliance of seeing this huge epic love story played out in a mainstream movie with gay leads. i was prepared to see a groundbreaking climax that will become an iconic scene in queer cinema. with all my hype and excitement for love simon and the significance of it, i was - mostly - prepared for that.

what i was less prepared for was remembering that this mainstream teen movie finishes up with a relationship that’s familiar, and sweet, and blissfully, beautifully ordinary. love simon has changed lives with its power to normalise queer relationships, but let’s be honest, riding around on a ferris wheel for hours until your email boyfriend shows up at the last second to kiss you isn’t exactly the normal romantic experience.

greeting your boyfriend with a cup of iced coffee and a kiss, however? that’s romance as the world at large knows it. and maybe this is silly of me, but in all the holy freaking awesomeness that was the plot of this story, i kind of forgot that the world of mainstream teen cinema was, in that two second quick peck, about to see its first breathtakingly normal gay kiss between its lead characters.
