────               often  wondered  the  inner  workings  of  how  sentences  formed  in  tobias’  head  ,  phrase  aca-scuse  me  launching  her  to  a  place  she  hadn’t  expected  to  be  taken  to  ,  bit  of  her  drink  splashed  onto  the  canvas  as  she  let  out  a  laugh  .  “  my  water  only  looks  a  bit  clearer  because  i  just  replaced  it  ,  “  consoles  ,  a  few  minutes  prior  and  her  horrifically  dirty  paint  water  would’ve  put  up  a  fight  and  won  .  she’d  already  been  ready  to  go  before  he  was  brave  enough  to  mention  it  out  loud  ,  playful  knit  in  her  eyebrows  lightened  with  an  exaggerated  oooohhh  ,  “  i  mean  .  .  .  there  are  concepts  of  a  farm  ,  for  sure  ⸺  but  it’s  not  screaming  ‘  blanky  ‘  to  me  ,  “  tries  to  sound  like  some  kind  of  savant  ,  mock  pretentious  tone  making  her  actual  accent  even  stronger  .  “  why  don’t  we  leave  the  drunk  painting  dreams  behind  and  get  out  of  here  ,  then  ?  i  think  the  paint  fumes  are  getting  to  both  of  our  heads  plus  all  this  thinking  kind  of  made  me  hungry  ,  “  she  huffs  ,  already  starting  to  pile  her  used  paintbrushes  into  the  dirty  cup  .  “  or  we  could  go  get  actual  drinks  and  then  eat  .  .  .  whatever  you  want  ⸺  all  i  know  is  you  owe  me  a  negroni  .  “ 

❪        🎨        ❫        : “   you   did?   …   shite.   i   totes   missed   that.   ”   tobias   has   not   the   most   spatial   awareness,   but   they   do   tend   to   notice   more   than   they   let   on,   just   not   in   the   middle   of   a   place   where   zen   should   be   found   instead.   when   she   takes   on   the   savant   tone,   their   mouth   pops   open   in   a   dreaded   ohhh   and   they   slowly   nod,   taking   it   all   in.   maybe   it   gave   no   blanky   for   sure,   that   was   the   beauty   of   art   being   subjective.   one   of   the   reasons   they   chased   after   that   dream   with   the   nose   of   a   bloodhound,   and   stumbled   through   it   like   a   fucking   amateur   all   the   time.   “   y'wanna   like,   take   it   with   us   and   we   finish   it   later?   i   got   plenty   of   paints.   ”   raspberry   lips,   the   hand   gesture   with   his   signet   ring   flashing   in   a   vague   puh-lease.   “   man.   i   think   you're   onto   somethin',   i'm   starved.   wai-wai-wait   … ”   they   lean   behind   their   canvas   and   pull   up   the   bottle   of   —   well,   her   bottle   of   vermouth,   technically?   a   quarter   still   left   in   the   bottle.   “   if   the   one   they   make   you   don't   have   enough,   we   got   the   goods.   ”   a   jittery   chuckle   coming   out,   mind   already   moving   exactly   onto   what   she'd   suggested:   food   and   getting   away   from   the   fumes.   “   whatever   i   want   is   a   big   decision   for   elmo,   but   like.   italian.   ”   (   not   too   hard   after   all.   )   they   pull   up   their   canvas   bag   and   start   tucking   the   bottle   inside   the   rags   and   folded-up   sweatpants   and   broken   bag   of   sun   chips   like   a   little   pack   rat.   “   did   you   know   that   acrylic   paints   are   super   toxic   until   they   dry?   ”   not   a   helpful   tidbit   to   be   sharing,   but   tobias   loves   to   give   names   to   headaches   —   whether   paint-caused   or   people-caused.

────              "  i  don't  know  .  .  .  i  guess  i'm  just  looking  for  something  like  ⸺  colorful  ,  but  not  too  colorful  or  beau  might  have  a  heart  attack  ,  "  always  found  this  part  of  her  move  to  be  the  hardest  ,  the  decor  ,  had  never  found  shopping  to  be  so  exhausting  until  she  wasn't  doing  it  with  mostly  herself  in  mind  .  now  came  the  final  piece  in  making  her  and  beau's  house  a  home  of  her  own  ,  finding  the  right  mixture  of  art  that  made  the  house  feel  alive  while  still  soaked  in  that  southern  charm  .  "  maybe  i  should  just  give  up  on  the  art  and  go  straight  for  the  accent  wall  and  just  hang  some  photos  up  .  .  .  do  you  think  that'd  be  too  crazy  ?  "  she's  being  dramatic  ,  but  given  how  impossible  this  search  is  beginning  to  feel  ,  it  might  be  her  next  best  option  . ❪        🎨        ❫        : nodding   along,   a   pensive   expression   upon   their   face,   engaged   in   her   telling   stories.   except   it   wasn't   some   tall   tale   about   the   background   of   a   fake   monet,   it   was   about   her   partner   and   their   living   space.   tobias,   for   one   moment,   holds   up   a   hand,   and   becomes   …   serious.   “   hey   …   you   can,   like,   get   whatever   you   want,   y'know?   you   want   super   mario   mosaics?   hang   that   shit   up   in   the   rec   room,   a'right.   beau   needs   to   have   an   open-mind.   ”   takes   on   a   particular   korean   accent   there,   mimicking   the   skit   found   online,   before   they   clear   their   throat   and   return   to   the   matter   at   hand,   now   both   hands   to   calm   her   hurried   rambling   and   the   dramatic   fear   of   finding   nothing.   “   nah,   i   got'chu.   toby's   your   dobie,   i'll   sniff   out   the   best   thing   for   you   both.   like,   photos   are   considered   art   and   i   can   give   you   some   black-and-whites   to   look   at   if   you   wanna   solid   colour   for   that   wall?   ”   goes   with   the   idea,   even   as   they   manoeuvre   her   towards   the   slightly   less   ‘colourful’   area   of   what   was   currently   up   for   sale.

❪        🎨        ❫        : with   their   main   village   man,   tobias   simply   wanted   to   have   fun.   invite   and   get   him   out   of   the   office   mindset,   stop   letting   him   get   fucked   up   with   so   many   racing   thoughts.   it   was   totally   not   cool   to   have   thoughts   in   a   race   all   the   time,   three-legged   and   tied   together,   it   was   terrible.   (   speaking   from   experience.   )   his   heart,   a   little   flip   at   the   concept   of   accepting   the   date   —   well,   dates   could   be,   like,   whatever,   and   they   glance   over   the   rim   of   their   glass   at   julian's   shattered   annoyance   and   scoff.   “   it's   about   tasting   and   art,   ju,   not   the   drowning   of   a   fucking   macmillian   wannabe.   ”could   splatter   the   remnants   upon   julian's   canvas   but   tobias   decides   they   don't   wish   to   choose   such   artistic   violence,   pondering   over   the   scattered   hues   upon   the   roof,   and   the   ‘flames’   lifting   upwards.   “   dude,   that's   like   …   avant   garde,   you   got   like   this   autumn   thing   going   on,   that's   legit.   ”   to   anybody   else,   it   wouldn't   be.   tobias   compliments   him   anyways,   lacking   a   sour   tone,   truly   in   awe   of   julian   bothering   to   try. “   also,   working   ‘round   it   does   not   a   talented   artist   make.   ”   waggling   the   bristles-end   of   their   brush   at   him.   at   least   no   droplets   ruin   the   painting;   tobias   would   have   to   throttle   themself   if   it   did.   their   stomach,   in   a   soft   flip-flop   at   julian’s   side   profile,   quick   to   glance   away   and   stare   at   their   own   canvas,   a   hyperrealistic   take   on   what   appeared   to   be   scattered   oils   and   more   smudged   landscape.   hadn't   reached   the   house   as   of   yet,   would   they   even   include   it   in   this   theme?   something,   something,   isolation.   “   i   got   the   eye   for   how   it   looks,   but   putting   it   down?   i'm   like   a   rat   in   an   open   spam   can,   dunno   which   way   is   out,   just   …   getting   like,   fat   on   paint.   ”   lost   the   plot   somewhere   in   there.   they   can   hear   their   wallet   crying   for   the   idea   of   getting   julian   another   drink,   due   to   the   extra   ones   no   longer   being   on   the   house.   “   i'm   a   glutton   for   good-lookin'   shit,   man.   ”

❪        🎨        ❫        : these   moments   still   hit   them   the   hardest,   made   them   break   a   nervous   sweat.   what   happens   if   their   concept   of   the   client's   description   doesn't   match   up?   adjusting   their   spectacles   with   a   push   of   their   knuckle,   the   gold   hoop   in   their   left   ear   slightly   crooked   from   their   rush   this   morning,   they   hum   a   short   note   to   themself.   “   right…   ”   trailing   off   in   thought.   they   opened   thirty   minutes   early   (   and   on   a   usual   day   off,   so   like,   you   do   what   you   gotta   do   )   for   this,   they   do   not   wanna   disappoint.   at   last,   they   organised   the   seller's   gallery   by   genre,   and   the   abstract   artwork   rests   in   a   corner   best   captured   with   light,   where   the   front   windows   could   show   off   the   different   materials   used   in   some   of   the   pieces.   “   so   like   …   yeah,   most   of   what   i   like   is   pretty   out   there.   contemp'   art   can   go   back   to   the,   like,   groovy   seventies,   and   if   you   wanna   impress,   i   do   got   vintage.   ”   word   earning   a   finger   gun   at   her.   “   how   out   there   ya   want?   blobs   and   squares?   melting   clocks?   uhh   …   vaporwave?   ”   for   the   latter,   they   point   to   a   larger   piece.   bright,   neon   background;   cut-outs   of   websites   and   pop-ups,   a   scrapbooking   of   the   digital   age.

❪        🎨        ❫        : tobias   blinks   as   the   array   of   dishes   sets   before   them,   mouth   opening   in   a   genuine   oh!   of   quiet   regard.   “   i'm   supposed   to   just   pick   one?   ga'damn,   i'm   gonna   fail   this   quiz.   or   am   i,   like,   eating   it   all   and   embracing   my   inner   babe   the   pig   persona?   ”   they   pluck   the   tasting   fork,   spectacles   on,   and   start   with   the   aba-doo-yaba-di   she   mentioned   first,   and   their   emotions   play   out   live   for   her.   “   is   that   a   raisin?   …   what   is   happening   in   this.   ”   genuine   bewilderment,   they   have   never   seen   this   before,   and   food   is   an   art   in   its   own   right.

❪        🎨        ❫        : “   hex   -   ex   kinda   sounds   like   a   bug   spray   …   or   an   episode   of   scooby   -   doo   …   ”   the   artist   squints   over   their   reading   spectacles   at   another   bottle,   red   glass   and   obscure   liquid   within,   label   written   in   some   kind   of   crazy   ass   font   they   could   barely   make   out.   “   i   mean-uh,   it's   what,   like   …   five   dollars?   could   be   the   best   five   dollars   spent   on   a   hack   job.   what'chu   mean,   luck?   do   hexes   get   worse   if   you   have   better   luck?   ”   their   brow   knots   together.   this   has   nothing   to   do   with   anything   she's   speaking   on   nor   the   hurt   she   feels.   tobias   observes   that   in   a   sense,   and   yet   their   mind   …   keeps   going.   “   wild.   ”

( open starter from alexander errington ! ) alex scrolled through his phone, brows furrowed deep. he had been at this for twenty minutes, watching short videos on what memes meant. memes. what even are memes? what makes a meme a meme? he had so many questions. he sighed, rubbing at his temples. "apparently, we are all classified under categories. gen alpha? what next—beta, omega?" he grumbled, "wouldn't it be easier to just say what year they were born in?"

jisu has never shied away from having dinner on her own, especially here recently. most of the time, she cooked for herself and noa at home, switching between her own favorite korean dishes and even dipping into more classic dishes, too. tonight, with noa working a shift, she figured she'd go out and finds herself at the hollow grain. the steakhouse is warm while following the host to her table, but she's surprised when she already sees someone sitting there. " what are you— " her words are cut off when the host begins apologizing for the apparent double book. " it's okay, just an oversight. " jisu shares a polite smile and turns to the person seated. ❪        🎨        ❫        : completely   oblivious   to   the   conversation   ongoing,   tobias   glances   down   through   their   spectacles   at   the   art   on   the   ipad   before   them,   absentminded   in   the   cut   of   their   steak.   fork   and   knife,   slicing   through,   only   to   get   brought   back   to   reality   with   the   suffered   apologies,   and   they   glance   up,   blinking   not   unlike   a   frog.   ❝ ahhh   … ❞   a   pop   of   their   lips,   a1   sauce   untouched,   drink   melting   around   the   straw.   ❝ i'll   buy   your   drink   if   you   wanna   put   up   with   my   shit. ❞   gestures:   their   literal   stuff,   strewn   about,   albeit   on   their   side   of   the   booth.   art   supplies   in   a   half   -   opened   suitcase,   their   leather   jacket,   the   underlying   smell   of   grease   on   top   of   the   nice   aura   of   the   restaurant.   ❝ tell   me   what   you   like,   yeah?   totally   on   me. ❞

" this, the truth. bailed on them the last time they'd made plans; something about clashing work schedules or what have you. had to pick up a shift for a coworker there was an emergency, you know! there wasn't. never was. jihoon muted their contacts from work except for one other bartender. " feels like you're usin' me for date practice. like ... ooooh, let me show you how to hold it ... " he's deliberate and precise with the watercolor. jihoon overfloods the bristles of the brush far too dried with red and jabs it into tobias' knuckles. " ohhhh no ... oppsie. " he snorts, shaking his head.

❪        🎨        ❫        : ❝ hoonie, why? ❞ their   mouth   gapes   at   the   paint   droplets   seeping   into   the   knee   of   their   trousers.   their   gesture   slows   with   the   dramatic   reveal.   ❝   these   are   vintage   levi   denim   505s.   from   an   auction,   an   auction!!!   ❞   emphasis,   just   in   case   he   didn't   understand   the   sheer   weight   of   what   a   little   piss-ant   attitude   just   did.   ❝   i'm   not   using   you   for   jack   shit,   claude   blow-nase,   i   was   just   glad   you   bothered   to   come.   ❞   nobody   has   managed   to   pull   this   tone   of   voice   out   from   tobias's   otherwise   jaunty,   charismatic   throat,   but   these   barbs   are   particular   and   well-placed   and   drive   into   their   ribs   like   thorns.   jihoon   jabs   the   red   into   tobias's   knuckles,   creasing   it   with   the   stain   of   berries,   and   tobias   has   a   moment,   lightning   reflexes   to   snatch   the   brush   by   the   handle,   and   two   of   jihoon's   fingers   with   it,   to   yank   him   off   the   stool   a   little.   it   jostles.   ❝   here,   lemme   show   you,   date.   ❞   flips   the   brush,   slides   it   along   the   underside   of   jihoon’s   wrist,   remainder   of   the   overloaded   paint   to   coat   his   skin   and   sleeve.   ❝   that's   how   you   hold   it,   remember?   ❞   extends   his   splotched   thumb,   places   it   on   jihoon's   canvas,   wipes   it   off   in   a   perpetual   stain.

every  so  often  back  home  scarlett  would  find  herself  at  one  of  these  paint  and  sip  classes,  more  so  for  the  enjoyment  of  her  friends  considering  it  was  hard  finding  time  where  all  of  their  schedules  could  align.  regardless  of  the  fact  that  she  was  the  most  artistically  inclined  of  her  friends,  it  felt  nice  to  get  loose  limbed  after  a  couple  glasses  of  wine  and  create  something  that  wasn't  tied  to  her  job.  sure,  since  moving  to  willow  glen  she’s  made  some  friends,  but  none  to  the  extent  of  her  best  friends  back  in  new  york.  it’s  in  part  why  scarlett  signed  herself  up  on  a  split  decision  for  the  class,  chasing  a  past  memory  in  hopes  of  finding  some  comfort  in  the  water  colors  and  cheap  pinot  noir.  she’s  taken  some  creative  liberties  from  the  instructor  with  their  landscape  vision. “  what  makes  you  say  that  ?? ”  scarlett  asks,  dipping  her  brush  into  the  dirties  cup  of  water  and  raising  her  brows  at  the  other.  “  you  insinuating  that  my  art  looks  like  shit  ?? ”  scarlett  isn’t  really  upset  but  every  so  often  enjoys  stirring  the  pot  for  shits  and  giggles  more  than  anything  else.  which  can  be  reflected  in  the  upward  curve  of  her  lip  and  tilt  of  her  head  as  blue  hues  assess  them.

❪        🎨        ❫        : ❝ …   nononono,   wai-wai-wait. ❞   london   and   texas   mix   through   their   stumbling   accent,   a   sudden   choke   on   their   negroni   as   she   perks   those   brows   at   them,   mouth   quivering.   ❝ i   was   just,   i   was   just…   i-ahh.   ah,   you're   joshing   my   jollies. ❞   the   smile   returns,   bigger   and   serene.   tobias   loves   a   good   gossip,   a   digging   at   those   around   them,   a   study   in   the   lives   of   others,   but   confrontation   with   an   outright   insult   often   has   them   in   the   immediate   action   of   backtracking.   you   don't   have   to   like   everybody   on   your   friends'   list;   then   you   wouldn't   have   any   bloody   friends,   but   they   really   intend   no   true   meanness.   most   times.   ❝ wasn't   saying   a   thing   about   it   sucking,   cross   my   heart. ❞   cross   their   middle   finger   over   their   forefinger   instead.   ❝ i   just   know   we   got   told   to   include,   like,   a   couple   trees   and   i'm   looking   for   your   trees. ❞   they   too   took   some   liberties   with   the   prompt:   muddled   trunks,   less   sharpened   or   defined   angles,   attempting   that   whole   one   layer   of   paint   acts   as   a   petal,   though   the   execution,   debatable.   had   a   multitude   of   colours   on   their   palette,   and   brown   to   blue   of   hues   now   as   well.

to  be  completely  honest ,  daejin  isn't  even  sure  why  he  is  here .  it's  not  something  he  gravitates  to ,  painting  that  is .  the  man  had  never  been  the  artistic  sort ,  no  that  was  something  left  to  another  in  his  life ...  well  who  used  to  be  in  his  life .  still  he  had  paid  for  the  experience  like  everyone  else  and  at  least  there  was  booze  a  part  of  it  so  that  a  strong  drink  could  get  him  through  it .  he  brings  the  glass  of  bourbon  up  to  his  lips ,  the  ice  inside  clinking  around  as  he  sips  at  it .  tilting  his  head  toward  the  other ,  he  shrugs  his  shoulders  casually .  " i  wouldn't  say  first  time ,  surely  i  held  one  in  school  when  i  was  little ...  though  i  daresay  i  have  the  same  skill  at  painting  now  as  i  did  then . "

❪        🎨        ❫        : ❝   jesus,   you   could   hold   a   brush?   my   ass   was   in   those   paint   sticks.   ❞   a   huh!   expression   across   their   face,   a   slosh   of   their   ice   around   in   their   own   glass,   a   gentle   sip.   tastes   that   strong   kind   of   bitter   tobias   likes,   which   might   explain   the   natural   draw   (   ha,   get   it   )   here   to   keep   talking.   the   other   man   has   a   kinda   silt   quality   to   him,   a   whole-in-your-palm   kind   of   feeling.   kinda   face   you   don't   forget   even   if   you   want   to   —   waait,   no,   that   was   said   about   me!   fuuuck!   ❝ who   gives   a   wet   limp   noodle   about   skill.   i   just   like   to   hear   people's   first   time   stories   with   the   craft.   my   gallery's   for   skill,   this   is   for   fun. ❞   tobias   waggles   their   brows,   lowering   the   glass   with   quickness.   ❝ you   goin'   …   modern? ❞   volunteers   it   helpfully.   really   should   consider   putting   their   reading   spectacles   back   on,   tucked   into   an   inner   pocket   out   of   sight,   but   nothing   irritates   them   faster   than   smears   of   pthalo   blue   on   the   lenses.
