seeing some more discussion of single vs double yellows in f1 after qualifying last week and I thought id say my piece as someone who occasionally trains novice fia flaggers…
sometimes it feels like people believe a double yellow is a single yellow with exclamation points but they have distinct meanings that are designed to give drivers an idea of what they’re coming up to. while the flags change depending on what series you’re doing, this is universal to almost all series I’ve worked— there are two types of yellows, and their goals are to convey to drivers the location of the incident to the racing line. when incidents off-track get upgraded to double yellow, it’s not because of the incident itself— it’s because of the response around it. its also important to note that single yellows prevent passing, which helps it be more effective at neutralizing risk during races opposed to qualifying sessions
should f1 be more willing to call red flags or get safety out there without full track neutralization ? Maybe . Should single yellows get more aggressive rules associated with it (i.e. concrete speed limits or lap times deleted like for double yellows) so drivers will respect it more? yes, I think so… but muddling the flag meanings to become even more subjective is not the answer

The text thread was largely bare.
A liked picture of a little puppy, a short yet laboured-over message from the last weekend of May, a steaming loaf of sourdough, an hour-long phone call one set of failed upgrades later, some deleted images, and now three typing dots coming and going again and again and again.
Seb had started it, he knew. Even in his self-imposed exile, he couldn't completely quit the circus, and Monza had always struck true.
The scene of his first win back when he was still being coached by Franz at Faenza, heralding his promotion and championships to come, and yet also the living reminder of the failed mission that haunted him still.
He had never won at home for Ferrari, not in their temple.
And yet Charles had done so. Twice now.
Years ago, all qualifying impudence had been forgiven by the result that Seb hadn't managed, and now it had happened all over again, but somehow even more miraculously.
Watching from home, it took what was left of Seb's pride not to burst into the same tears as Charles's newest race engineer had.
He'd grown so much.
Seb had swiped his phone open to tell Charles as much when the oven alarm sounded, and he busied himself with the distraction, smearing thick honeycomb over crusty bread as he picked up Fabian's weekly call instead.
His phone was hot in his hand by the time he'd finished, the paddock all packed up as Ted signed off on the TV.
He'd be there in person in Brazil, had the screenshots he'd sent Lewis, Max and Lando to prove it.
But he hadn't told Charles, who likely knew anyway.
And he never sent that message either.
That night he dreamed of an F2 driver on the simulator, his old friend bemusingly content to stepdown, a failed engine at night, a clash in brazil, the song senorita, two wins in a row and the desperation he had to just get one, chants and newspapers and belief that a new prospect would do what he had failed to as he and Mattia came to an agreement a whole season ahead of schedule.
He dreamed of green eyes and awful shorts and a whole body twitch when teased, of a man who soaked up all of Seb's knowledge and only occasionally used it against him.
He dreamed, too, of that new race engineer’s overcome voice, and wondered if he was the only one dreaming tonight, or if candles were being lit all over Italy once more.
Charles didn't have a world championship yet.
On some nights, Seb wondered if that was the way he preferred it, then punished himself for it and didn’t let himself look at Charles’s old photos for a week at a time.
Charles deserved better, and so did his old colleagues.
Sitting up in his sweaty bed, he reached for a glass of water and grabbed at his phone by the light of the moon. The messages from the rest of the grid were far from sparse; the notifications from his Instagram page, too— it was somehow only Charles's contact that left him this fraught.
Three dots appeared on Charles's side of the conversation before disappearing.
Again and again and again.
Finally, they stopped, and Seb put his phone on to charge.

oh, you want some galex fic recs? well, my favorite galex fanfiction is that one very very very long childhood friends to lovers AU that is still ongoing and updating pretty regularly.
i still remember that one chapter where george and alex went to portugal and there was a reverse there was only one bed trope. they had two beds and decided to push them together and then george woke up with a throat infection. the angstiest chapter was where alex had a complication and got put into a medically induced coma and his parents called george to be prepared of the possibility of alex passing. it made me sob into my pillow. it was pretty cute that alex's family basically became george's second family with him being over for dinner at alex's parent's house more than alex himself. also the parallels in the fic were amazing. my favorite parallel was alex helping george get into the intrepid driver's program for karting and george later helping alex get his williams seat. the fact that george was such a supportive boyfriend that the williams board told alex they can't consider the opinions of george since he was campaigning too hard was so funny and sweet. it was also so cute that both george and alex had pictures of each other. but sometimes, i got second hand embarrassment whenever they kept flirting on their social media. like when george asked alex's girlfriend lily for nudes but then lily called him out by saying that "if anyone has them it would be you" and alex reposted an edited photo of george wearing lingerie which was a weird thing to do on main. man, i miss their streaming era so much. also of course we can't talk about this fic without mentioning the collarbone mountain biking incident where george drove alex to the hospital. i also kinda felt bad for lily though since george was super biased towards alex during the cooking competition during one of alex/lily's first dates. the recent chapters were pretty amazing too. some of the most memorable highlights from the ongoing 2025 chunk of the story were monaco and the dinner date afterward where alex paid for george's lobster pasta, george ignoring alex's hangout request in favor of going on a yacht, and--
oh wait. sorry, i got my notes mixed up. this is just real life, not fanfiction. never mind. i'll leave.

when i say these cars have neutralized the greats of this sport i am not doing it to joke and haha giggle giggle about it. they have plucked out anything special they can do and the bare minimum gets the average driver ahead with the better engine
you can agree or disagree about charles but you can't take away the fact that he is one of the most remarkable qualifying drivers this sport has ever seen and he is acknowledging he can't do much. what does that say about the state of this sport?
