Master Daki implying he could have been around during the high Republic and witnessed the defeat of the Nihil makes so much sense for his attitude towards the empire. Like yeah if I saw the reign of a group of bloodthirsty rabid terrorists who had ships that could break every known law of hyperspace and a literal incurable planet eating plague that turned everything it touched into dust and almost destroyed the entire galaxy then I wouldn't be too concerned about some fascists either.

Star wars authors be like. I am going to take this character with -5 minutes of screen time and 1 discernable personality trait and write a story where they are the most nuanced and interesting person in the world. And also gay.
I think the constant reuse of a death star/ planet killer type weapon in most star wars movies really desensitizes us to how much of an utterly inconceivable tragedy the destruction of an entire planet actually is.
The loss of life is one thing, millions or even billions of living beings wiped out instantly. Millions of people that had families, friends, hopes and dreams connecting them to each other and to every other lifeform in the galaxy just... Gone. A gaping wound is all that's left of the love that used to be there. A grief and mourning that would stretch the entire length and width of the galaxy. There aren't even any bodies to bury.
Then there's the loss of hundreds of thousands of years of culture and history, artefacts, sacred sites, books, artworks and everything that once formed the inhabitants identities erased permanently. The entirety of a civilisation, built from the dirt into cities and monuments and homes not just reduced to rubble, but reduced to dust. Nothing left for future historians to study, nothing left for people to see or experience or do except for erasing the place that used to exist from maps and star charts.
Moons left alone without a planet to orbit. Every object in the solar system straining under such a substantial change in gravity. Destruction on such an utterly massive, completely irreparable scale that it bleeds uncontrollably through time and space, like a wound that will never close.

Reading about Porter Engle and General Viess really highlights why the Jedi were peacekeepers but not pacifists.
This passage alone illustrates really well how the Jedi are terrifyingly effective at combating evil, not despite but because of their dedication to preserving peace and life.

The nature of star wars is such that the main plotline will inevitably drift past an infinitely more interesting and compelling subplot like a ship in the night and you will almost certainly never hear about it again.
Random Question: What were the Mandalorians doing during the High Republic? Were they affected at all by the Great Hyperspace Disaster? Did Mandalorian Space fall within the Nihil's Occlusion Zone? And if so, how did that go down between them and the Nihil?
I have no idea but I imagine the Mandalorians would have looked at the Nihil/ Republic conflict and been like 'yikes not touching that with a ten foot pole' and the Nihil would have realized that starting a war with both the Republic and the Mandalorians would have been a Bad Idea.
