Watched the first two episodes of season 3 of cheers (two parter!) and all I can say that 'if tumblr was around when this show was airing, the 'sam/diane is toxic' vs the 'diane/frasier is unethical because he was her therapist' would have been dirty, dirty mudslinging.

(the second episode cleared up that he was not related to her care beyond separating a physical fight)

the sam/diane spark was lessened a bit in season 2, but yeah the season 3 of setup of 'we are sooo over each other SEE WE'LL WORK TOGETHER TO PROVE HOW OVER EACH OTHER WE ARE WHILE WE'RE DATING OTHER PEOPLE?' primo setup chef's kiss

(the end of season 2 they broke up twice in three episodes they aren't good for each other but the chem is insane)
