My local shipdom had a discussion on when Buggy started wearing make-up. We had evidences of Buggy wearing simple lipstick in movie (Roger Pirates vs Shiki scene) and chapter cover (that one where Shuggy playing cards; some didn't agree on this because that's just thick smearing ink lines) They were becoming teenagers, Shanks might had witnessed the first time Buggy wearing red lipstick and realized how kissable his lips were. After their separation, Shanks got updates of Buggy's make-up evolution each time he got his hands on Buggy’s wanted posters.
What do you think about a fem buggy au
But she is older than shanks instead of being the same age? Like 4 years older
Maybe she was already on the oro jackson, when God valley happened.
How would her and shanks dynamic change? Will he be more of a simp?
This Ask made me think of an entire AU where Fem!Buggy was found after one of Roger’s defeats against Rocks and how the entire crew knows to whom she belongs but don’t talk about it….
Anyway!
-How the Dynamic Changes:
Instead of two chaotic equals growing up together, it becomes more of a “cool, slightly older onee-san” energy from Fem!Buggy with Shanks as the eager, admiring younger kid who slowly catches up, and eventually surpasses her in some ways. She’s the one who’s already been through a few rough adventures, knows the ropes better, and has that extra layer of “I’ve seen some shit” confidence mixed with her usual dramatic flair.
-Throughout the years:
• Early Days: Little Shanks looks up to her like a cool big sister figure. Fem!Buggy, already in her flashy phase, teases him mercilessly but also looks out for him. She’s the one teaching him how to pull off dramatic entrances and how to properly throw a tantrum when Roger gives someone else the spotlight. Shanks is wide-eyed and obsessed from day one.
• Teen Years: The age gap makes their rivalry spicier. Fem!Buggy is hitting her “I’m a big shot” phase while Shanks is still the scrappy kid trying to keep up. She acts like she’s above his antics, but she’s secretly soft on him. Shanks starts developing that intense attachment earlier because she’s the first person who really saw him as an equal despite the gap.
• Adult Dynamic: By the time they’re both adults, the 4-year gap feels smaller, but the emotional imprint remains. Shanks is still very much a simp, but now it’s layered with deep respect for the “older sister” who helped shape him. He’s more protective because he remembers her looking out for him when he was small. Fem!Buggy is more tsundere than ever “Don’t get cocky just because you’re an Emperor now, Red-Hair. I taught you half those tricks!”
-Would Shanks be more of a simp?
Absolutely, but in a sweeter, almost reverent way. He already simps hard in the same-age version, but with her being older, it becomes this mix of childhood admiration + adult romantic obsession. He’s the type to say things like:
Shanks, grinning, a little drunk: “You know, even when I was a snot-nosed kid, I thought you were the coolest person on the seas. Still do.”
Fem!Buggy, flustered, throwing a shoe at him: “Shut up! You are still a snot-nosed kid! And Stop looking at me like that, you idiot!”
The age difference adds this nice layer of “he grew up wanting to be worthy of her” that makes his devotion feel even deeper. It also gives her more room to be the one who initially dismisses or protects him, making their eventual mutual pining hit harder.
Overall, I love this version. It gives Fem!Buggy more agency in their early dynamic while keeping Shanks’s golden retriever energy intact. The God Valley era would be especially juicy, her already being there as a slightly older apprentice during that trauma could make their bond even stronger or more complicated, depending on what route you wish to see it.
Fem!Buggy could grow resentment towards Shanks because of the new attention towards him, either because he is a new baby who needs the attention or just a natural talent that impresses him everyone, which will make their relationship a bit rocky.
but I like to think that because Fem!Buggy is older in this version and how Shanks would favor her approval more than anyone else will make their bond mend quicker that when they grew up side by side.
5 times Shanks became aware of FemBuggy and 1 time FemBuggy became aware of Shanks
FemBuggy and Shanks get into a heatted argument and start to grab the front of each others shirts, ready to brawl. Shanks makes the mistake of looking down and he realizes that he can see down FemBuggy shirt all the way to her navel. FemBuggy uses the distraction to punch Shanks the lights out of him.
They arrive to a tiny island and after checking they are alone, and getting fruit they decide to rest and take a Beach day. FemBuggy can't get into the sea so she decides to sunbath in a bikini. Shanks is so distracted that he does not hear the warning of a falling coconut and gets knocked out.
Rayleigh is teaching them full contact fight and FemBuggy manages to get Shanks into a chockhold with her thighs. Shanks is about to fight back and realizes what is happening and soon pass out as he started to choke hyperventaling
One day they are cleaning the boat and due to the heat, FemBuggy raises the hem of her shirt to clean her sweat. Shanks stares are waist while mopping without stoppong and falls overboard.
One day while walking in the streets some wind swept FemBuggy skirt and because Shanks was staring at her and not the road, he is run over by a passing motorbike
5+1. FemBuggy is in the crew nest and thinking about her future when Shanks shows up with hot cocoa. He ask her what is she thinking about and she tells him. He says that she will become someone who will conquer whatever she sets her mind into. She blushes and then screw her face as she realizes that he thought Shanks was galant
I love these, Shanks slowly realizing his attraction towards Fem!Buggy, probably the first one ever to him and Fem!Buggy is noticing how Shanks is seeing her..
But I have a question back….how is the crew reacting, because if our kids are in their own world doesn’t mean the crew won’t make themselves part of it somehow…
Imagine the crew in a corner watching everything unfolding, and Gaban is in the middle with a notebook on top of a barrel so he takes bets in.
Gaban, casually writing in his book: Twenty berries says their next big fight ends with one of them storming off and the other chasing after them within the hour.”
Crewmate #1: Fifty on Shanks getting distracted during training and eating a solid hit because he’s too busy staring.”
Crewmate #2: Hundred berries that Buggy throws something at him the next time he gives her one of those soft looks.”
Roger: Two hundred berries that Shanks will ask her to marry him out of the blue.
Rayleigh, hitting Roger in the head: don’t encourage this.
As the moments pile up, the beach day where Shanks nearly gets taken out by a coconut, the training chokehold where he taps out while clearly malfunctioning, the street wind incident that nearly gets them both run over, the bets get spicier and more specific.
Gaban, counting berries with a smirk after the crow’s nest cocoa moment: “Told you the first real blush would happen during a quiet supportive talk. Pay up, boys.
Crewmates, reluctant giving up their berries: “You probably cheated somehow! There is no way you could have predicted that!”
Gaban: hey! I’m the preacher of love! This is my thing, besides, Buggy’s tougher than she looks, but she still melts when he says something genuinely nice.”
The crew starts trying to subtly influence outcomes “Hey Shanks, Buggy’s hair looks extra flashy today~” or “Buggy, your shirt’s riding up again!” just to sway the odds in their favor.
When Buggy finally finds the ledger years later, she goes nuclear. Shanks is mortified but also low-key impressed by how long they kept it secret. Maybe they find out during their wedding or something.
Gaban, sheepishly handing over berries while trying not to laugh: To be fair, we were rooting for you two the whole time…”
Fem!Buggy, angrily: YOU WERE MAKING MONEY OVER CHILDISH LOVE YOU PERVERTS!
Shanks, whistles: That’s a lot of berries.
Fem!Buggy: that’s it I’m gonna tell Master Ray about this!
Gaban; Who do you think won the pool?
Rayleigh, takes the heavy bags: Shakky will be proud of me.
Fem!Buggy, feeling betrayed: …Master Ray..?
Shanks, shocked: he won?!
Gaban: I’m surprised as much as you kid.
Rayleigh, smug: I raised them I know exactly how they think, not even Roger could predict their next moves.
Angst and sadness:
One day the Oro Jackson finds an old stranded ship. They manage to find a chest with antique clothes: some dresses, some suits, jackets as such. FemBuggy realizes that they are wedding clothes.
After searching and prodding they find out that it a ship who would marry anyone no matter race or status. The reason it was stranded was that the marine found about them and they had to flee, so they took what they could, managed to get another ship and left that behind.
The crew jokes that is worthless for them as they are not the type to marry anyways. But femBuggy decides to try a dress as its super flashy full of ribbons, lace and silk. Shanks also tries a suit so he can match with FemBuggy.
Somewhere Shanks finds a pair of rings and propose to femBuggy. She rejects him but Roger finds it so funny that he declares them husband and wife. Rayleigh almost kills him as his word is law and by definition they are indeed married.
FemBuggy screams for a annulment, divorce or widowhood. Shanks is in another galaxy due to happiness. Everyone teases them about it and leave it alone after a while.
FemBuggy keeps the ring but in a necklace as the ring is pretty but Shanks wears it on his hand. He even dreams that one day he can have a proper wedding with FemBuggy
Then Loguetown happens.
FemBuggy janks the ring and leave everything behinds. Shanks picks it and has it resized so he can wear it alongside his.
When someone ask about the rings, he says that he is married. And when they follow up with the question of where his wife is, he only says: destiny pulled us apart.
No one else ask about it.
And indeed if destiny pulled them apart, can't destiny make them meet once again?
This accidental “marriage” is one of those beautifully layered scenes that captures everything fragile and ridiculous about Shanks and FemBuggy’s bond. It’s bittersweet.
the rings and Roger’s impulsive declaration turn it into something heavier, a half-joke that quietly plants itself in both their hearts. For Buggy, it becomes this strange mix of validation and terror: someone chose her in a way that feels permanent, even if it’s all pretend. For Shanks, it’s the first time the idea of “us” feels tangible, something beyond their usual rivalry and crewmate camaraderie.
Some Crewmates treat it like the funniest thing they’ve ever seen, turning it into running jokes for weeks. Others, like Rayleigh, are quietly concerned about how something so silly could accidentally complicate two kids who already have enough emotional baggage between them.
What makes it sting later is how that “playful” moment becomes a symbol of everything they lose at Loguetown. Buggy walks away convinced it was all a fleeting fantasy, another reminder that she was never truly chosen in the way she needed.
Shanks, left holding the pieces, turns those rings into something sacred, a private promise he carries with him through the years, a quiet anchor when the world feels too heavy.
The real tragedy that I see is how both of them seem to want the same thing but couldn’t quite bridge the gap of fear, timing, and self-doubt.
First, Buggy’s walls, built from years of feeling like an afterthought, made her pull away exactly when Shanks was ready to step closer.
Second, Shanks’s easygoing nature hid how deeply he had already committed his heart, so when she left, it shattered him in ways he never fully voiced.
Years later, those rings become their unspoken tether. It’s the kind of long-game storytelling that makes their eventual reunion feel earned and devastatingly sweet. The “marriage” wasn’t just a joke, it was the universe giving them a glimpse of what they could be before the world tore them apart.
This kind of AU hurts in the best way because it honors how messy first love can be when you grow up in a world that doesn’t make space for it. The playful beginning makes the later pain land even harder.
Now to the question, “can’t destiny make them meet once again?”
Yes, destiny can!
Years after Loguetown are long and painful. Shanks becomes the Emperor we know, carrying those rings like a quiet vow and throwing himself into the sea with that same lazy grin, but there’s always a piece of him waiting. Buggy builds her own flashy legend, loud and dramatic as ever, but the spot where the ring should be around her neck, feels like a secret reminder she never quite throws away.
We can all agree that the reunion won’t be clean or simple. It will be messy, explosive, and years in the making.
Maybe it happens during one of those fateful crossings where two Emperor-level crews run into each other. Or perhaps destiny can be kinder: a shared battlefield, a Marine trap, or even a neutral island where both of them dock for supplies at the exact wrong, or right, time.
The first conversation is all barbed words, old wounds, and one sided cursing, but the rings are still there in his one hand, she noticed them. They don’t say it out loud at first, but the way they keep gravitating toward each other says everything.
Shanks is more patient now, more willing to call her out on her walls. Buggy is still dramatic and defensive, but she’s also tired of running from the one person who’s always chosen her.
Their reunion isn’t a fairytale fix.
There’s yelling, years of resentment, and a lot of “you left” / “you didn’t come after me”, but underneath it is the same stubborn love that survived Loguetown.
Shanks eventually admits how much those rings meant to him. Buggy finally lets herself believe she was chosen, not just as a crewmate or rival, but as her.
Destiny didn’t just pull them apart. It gave them time to become the people who could actually choose each other properly, as equals, as partners, as the two idiots who’ve been tangled together since they were kids.
The sea works in mysterious ways.
but for these two?
It always brings them back. Eventually.

oh dear I'm thinking again about Shanks being told he has a destiny but it's NOT the One Piece by the man he looks up to above all others, and saw as his second family after finding out his birth family are evil slave-keeping monsters who basically rule the world.
I'm thinking about Buggy being told by the world and his own terrible self-esteem that he is just inherently lesser than Shanks, inferior, and crafting his entire bombastic, self-aggrandising personality in response because fuck that and fuck Shanks.
I'm thinking about Buggy at Loguetown, grieving and vulnerable, finally letting himself believe what he thinks is the truth - that Shanks was always meant to be his captain. Offering to sail under him to find the One Piece.
I'm thinking about Shanks, equally wracked with grief and horror, on top of knowing everything he knows about his family, being fucking horrified that his feisty little friend who NEVER lets anyone put him down would bow his head to Shanks.
I fully thought I posted this but ig not
hehe.. meow
Post-One Piece where Shanks is finally free from whatever responsibility Roger had put on him before he died and the first thing he did was go to Emptee Bluffs Island, straight to Buggy and tell him:
"Hey, I've always been in loved with you since we were kids and that has never changed. Anyway, will you marry sail with me forever?"
"Oh, I'm also a Celestial Dragon and my remaining biological family are all douchebags and I'm never talking to them again."
"Also, Roger told me to not look for the One Piece and keep the world in balance until the right person finds it because it's apparently not me. Sorry I couldn't find it with you."
Buggy, who had blanked out after the first revelation, was snapped back into reality after the last one. "What?" A moment of silence as the words sank in. "Why didn't you tell me that one first?!"
"I thought I'd go for the least surprising."
Buggy "Always Chosen Over" the Clown: "What do you mean that was the least surprising?!"
HCs for What Happens if Shanks and Buggy Never Became Pirates
If Gol D. Roger never took them and they never grew up as pirates, I can imagine the following:
For Shanks:
Some people think Shamrocks is just "what if Shanks grew up as a Celestial Dragon" but I don't think that's the case.
Even as a kid, Shanks' easygoing nature suggests he would probably find it harder to meet his father's expectations as he grew up.
He'd probably be drawn to the outside world because of that. Like Ariel in Disney's "The Little Mermaid," being drawn to the human world, which can foster his sense of adventure.
He's going to become the odd one growing up because he's too laidback and because of his interest with the outside world.
Gets awed by Gol D. Roger's final moments and the chaos that he had unleashed. He looked so free to Shanks. Got hooked on his adventures the more he learned about the man (secretly because their father would NEVER approve).
Spoiled ripe, not spoiled brat. Same charm, but unfortunately has some celestial dragon biases.
I think he'd still become one of the Holy Knights because of his natural talents in Haki and swordfighting.
Despite having little to no backing from other dragons, has managed to form a trusted crew of his own, even if their Father doesn't like them because they're not of noble blood.
The one more willing to travel outside the Mary Geoise. His brother is reluctant because he has a feeling Shanks might never return if their father approved of the plan to have him go as an undercover pirate.
For Buggy:
Since we don't know Buggy's origins yet, he'd probably end up as an orphan with well-meaning sailors dropping him off outside of the Grand Line because it's safer.
Probably grow up as a street kid in a sea port, helping fishing boats since he's good at swimming.
Handy with daggers, can stab a man with no hesitation, opportunistic pickpocketer.
Gets into fights because of comments (real and imagined) about his nose.
With Buggy's luck, he'd probably have to join the Marines at the youngest age that they would allow out of practicality, especially if he hadn't found a mentor to take him in.
However, he's too dazzled by the legend of Gol D. Roger to be a real Marine, especially by the legend of the One Piece.
Still would get into fights because of older recruits' attempts of hazing, plus real and imagined comments about his nose.
Moved up the ranks out of spite. A bit more lawful, meaning, because he had to study the laws, he can and will use the laws to his advantage.
Would probably take in other oddities just as he did to Moji and Cabaji.
Because of his greed, he'd be 60-80% corrupt, shaving the top, sides, and bottom of any pirate treasure he would confiscate... so pretty much like most Marines.
Loves his freedom, aka doing what he wants (and exploding stuff and makeup and gems), too much to stay and conform with the Marine ideology.
He's biding his time to hoard enough berries and treasure maps before deserting as a pirate to be with his one true love: treasures.
Somehow, it's still Shanks' (and Buggy's) fault that he ended up eating the Bara Bara no Mi—as a child or an adult, you do you.
