However, when you read between the lines, there are many romantic and queer elements between soukoku, shin soukoku, Ranpoe and Rimlaine that are intentionally coded into the story and some of it mirrors the few explicit feelings in the story like Poe's(even tho I can never imagine Poe ever staying with Ranpo if he disrespected Poe brutally) and Higuchi's behaviours mirroring(like they are both very evidently swoon over each Ranpo/Akutagawa) or Margaret and Nathaniel dynamic also mirroring with soukoku in ways. Moreover, more than half the authors involved in the ships were queer irl and it would make sense for them to be queer coded. So what I mean to say is that it doesn't make it contradictory to the canon to ship certain characters and that Asagiri probably just doesn't want the romance to become a focus of the story and that doesn't make it queerbait or baseless to ship the characters since Asagiri also doesn't seem against us shipping these either.
